I have been toying with the idea of placing a screen in the big gap left when the stock deck and equiliser is taken out. Not one of those in dash ones, but a lcd monitor so it looks similar to the nav system setup on rav4, soarer etc.

What do you guys thing bout this idea? Can anyone think of any problems about this idea?

if that whole hole is taken by the screen, where the stereo go? or have i got the wrong hole?

You got the right area im talking bout.....relocate the deck somewhere i guess hehehe, was thinking bout mounting deck in glove box area, control over deck wont be to hard, just have to rely on the remote.

Like i said this is an idea at the moment.

hm.. how abt a possible touch screen aswell?? hehe

another idea is to have the stereo behind the screen, but it has to be a detachable face one... and then rewire/add extention from the hu to it's face which can be relocated elsewhere, eg in the sun visor?

since it's only in the idea stage atm, I"m willing to brainstorm with you, although some of the ideas aren't too realistic, my head is always in the clouds =)

whats the purpose of this screen anyway? is it gonna be for dvd or carputer (in car computer)?

if carputer, touch screen is a must, and if you got the money to buy the parts, it aint that hard. key note: money

ahahahahahhaa.............my idea isnt that far fetched is it?

i was just gona use it as a screen, so hook up dvd player.
Just a tv screen, no computer......i dont have that kind of spare cash ehehehe

well then the dvd goes in the glove box, and the ps2 under passenger seat
if its just dvd, and you have a remote a touch screen is probably not necessary. but if you can get one cheap, all the better.

jojo

i wanted both the dvd and the deck in the glovebox, just the screen in the centre.

u'll have alot of empty space behind the screen, so why not put something behind it? as ur example of the rav4 and soarer, their screen flips down so u can insert cds.

have you thought abt which screen or dvd player yet?

does anone have picsof the interior of the bg? i want to see it and get ideas from it.
as my friend has a civic and molded an extra din, don't know if the bg has enough space for it.

you can buy single din tv that have motorised flip screen my mate has on in his carolla tha same type of spot as yours.

jojo
20-09-2004, 02:02 PM
i was just gonna put one of those screens meant for a stand in there so it looks flush, everyone has the motorised screens hehe.

i wanted it to sorta look like how the screens are setup in the soarers etc. Wanted something different.

geetee
21-09-2004, 04:43 AM
i think that would be possible.
you`ve only got the ashtray below that area anyway so you could take a bite out of that if you had to.......

howsabout utilising the middle vents on the dash?
you could remove the vents, make up a trick fibreglass panel, and house the screen in there!!! 8)
i reckon the standard twin din slots a bit low down for a screen anyway......

jojo

But thats just too much hassle, my way is easier etc

But thats just too much hassle, my way is easier etc

the easiest way is to get a single din flip out screen which also plays dvds =P

jojo

ahhahaha smartass!

you know what i meant

Nate

i can see where you are coming from jojo ... with the whole flush thing ... cityend is right he easiest way would be the single din flip outs ... but IMO they look ****** :P ... i like the flush idea... jaycar have on special this week a screen that would do the job nicely for $400 odd ... which i think would be a whole lot cheaper than a single din flip out... then all you need is an invertor (on sale at aldi today for $59) and with a little help from mister PS2 ... hey presto dvds in the car

** please dont hurt me

or if your smart enough, you'd bypass the inverter... and bypass the 220v input, whihc steps down to 15v from what i can make out ...

A carputer has been on my list of things to do for so long now that its not funny. Realistically the only thing holding me back is a power supply...

Somewhere ion that site a while ago I found a pic of a guy with a custom molded dash and a 15" touch screen in the centre consol - now thats an in car screen :-)

man that 15" screen sounds fantastic, i don't think i'd go that far though.

so what were the spec of the carputer that u r planning on getting?

jojo: i was looking though a dicksmith catalouge and found this item i think u might be interested in.

i think the car DVD/ screen players are still somewhat over priced
seeeing that ya can get a 15 inch LCD computer screen for $380!
5 inch screen for car $500, another ten inches? n its cheaper hehehe

ive got my xbox ready and waiting to go into the car.
chip is in , hard drive is upgraded, software is loaded, all the mp3s from the car's old HD have been loaded and some more need to go on that never made it into the car. possibly abt 5000 tracks once I clean out some of the rubbish

if I had time, i'd do it tonight. but i dont. but it should be installed by the weekend with a full writeup :)

i expected soldering the chip to the m/b to be a lot harder than it was. my last chip install was a pain in the ass and this was supposed to be harder.

first step is to get the bare minimum in and running, then I've got a 4x20 lcd to go in and the flush screen in the dash sounds like a good idea if only i could work out where to put the controller from my processor

I've been looking at combining one of these DC power supplies:
http://www.procase.com.tw/mainpage2003.htm

with a nano-ITX motherboard:
http://www.viaembedded.com/product/epia_N_spec.jsp?motherboardId=221

It may be possible to put both in a single dim slot in the console, then put a foldout touchscreen above it for small but complete package.

these nano itx boards aren't available to the general public yet, tho :( and it would probably cost the same as buying a laptop ;)

xbox is in.

b4 u ask - theres no pics yet.

theres still a few things to do, wires need to be tidied, i need to make the inverter's power switch triggered by the stereo remote signal etc.

Then once the basics are done I'll look at getting my 4x20 lcd into the dash ( i might steal dans idea in the spot where the clock goes ) and find a better solution for controlling it.

Im still not sure if power drain is going to be an issue. Its sucking the voltage down very very slowly at idle. I think I need a better alternator.

damn I thought the optima and 0 guage would be enough !

but it sounds great and the fibre optic digital output is working now :)
