Hi guys,

I just bought a set of 17” 2nd hand wheels. They have 225/45/17 tyres on them. I just fitted them on my 1997 1.8 Astina yesterday. The people from the tyre centre said its fine, but when I drove it today the steering of the car just feels weird and just didn’t feel right. Just wondering if anyone out there have the same wheel/tyre size? Or anyone know if the tyre is too wide for my Astina?

Is 215/45/17 is the max I can go?

Any help will be appreciated! :D

Cheers guys!

i would recomend 205/40/17's on a 7" wide rim or 215/40 on a 7.5" wide rim. 45 series tyres arent too common on the astina. best thing todo is check the gap between the tyre and the strut/shock on the rear. they should be pretty close with a 225 tyre

the tramlining would be crazy, thats the tendancy for the car to find a rut in the road and follow it....
but cornering would be out of this world!!

I have 215/45s/R17 on my other rims and they were fine. My car is lowered also.

i also have 215/45/R17 and have never scrubbed or anything, even with king spring lowerin springs.... for the funny feeling go get a 4 wheels allignement, the wheels should be ballenced right cos they were just fitted but get that checked anywahy...

Thanks for the great help guys!

Scruffy: I checked the gap between the tyre & the strut, yup its pretty close but its not touching tho. I think I have about 1cm gap. Is that bad?

ahb11m: yeah u r definately right about the cornering :)

Sik astina & Pope|z0r: u both have 215/45/17 but I have 225/45/17 I got this bad felling that 225 is too fat for my Astina. Specially when no one out there have 225/45/17 tyre on their cars. I just don't want to drive on the highway with unsafe wheels. But I'll get a wheel allignement checked as u sugested.

So I guess now body knows anyone actually uses 225/45/17?

What's the width of the rim?? 225 seems a little too wide for a 7" or 7½" .. but you never know..

1cm should be enough room, you may want to check your tyres and suspension for signs of wear for the next few Saturdays.
Keep us posted and don't worry about the panic merchants your tyres and wheels would be different to theirs and they have been proven wrong before. If people don't try new things then we stagnate.

sorry AP I don't know the width if the rim. I got this whole package from a tyre centre. All I know is my rim has 225/45/17 tyre on them. So I guessing it must be more then 7" or 7.5" wide. I'm not an expert on tyres & wheels so anyone out there knows better please let me know.

I have 215/45 R17's on my Mazda 626 (I know, it's not an astina), but I have just under 3mm gap from the edge of the tire, to the suspension arms.

I have done about 20,000 on these now, and there is NO sign of wear from the suspension arm or tires.

There is DEFINATELY signs of wear on the tires, from the road, but that's another issue I have.

I am thinking of changing my 205/50/r16 to 215/45/R17 (and they look the S$^&) but I am alittle woried about changing outer wheel diameter due to inaccuracy in the speedo and how this will actually effect acceleration.

I know any differences to the speedo will be small so getting the speedo corrected (280 plus install) is something I can live out doing it.

More of concern is the slight loss of exceleration, seeing I have yet to get past 160Kmh I don't want bigger rolling diametre thus higher top speed thus slower excel.

If anything I more excel less top speed,

you wont notice the slower acceleration in the much of a change, my acceleration was minimal, going from 14" to 17". I went from 0 - 100 in 9.8 seconds to 0 - 100 in 10 seconds even.

Also, my speedo changed by about a bee's dick.

I now do 101.27km/h instead of 100km/h, so at 60km/h it's about .74km/h over.

If I get booked for that, I will personally tell the officer to ram the ticket up his #$%^.

I'm hoping that this is a typo.. as you don't want to be putting a 17" tyre on a 16" rim.. otherwise you'll be getting nowhere and notice a huge decline in acceleration :P

Please clarify..

Actually 215 x 40 are fine on 7" rims you can go 225s on 7's. 215 x 40 series are the go that should keep your speedo pretty well calibrated also

I'm running 205/40/17. Looks good, handlings good but is rough compared to the 14" donuts i used to have. The new nexens seem to be pretty good cornering in the dry, yet to try them wet or under high stress though

correct, I have 7" wide wheels and run 215/45.

OEM size for Focus Zetec is 215/45r17 on a 17x7 rim (mine are focus wheels)
