View Full Version : Wheel upgrade: 16*7 now or 17*7.5 later?

ok, the stock rim is simply too narrow, even for the stock 195/50/R16 tyres. whenever the front wheels are turned, the tyre movement will be different from the footprint of the rims. that's quite a bit of movement, and i'm thinking 7 inch wheel would certainly do bettert.

so, i'm serious about a wheel upgrade. since i've just got my 205/45/R16 toyo t1-s tyres, the cheapest option will be stay with 16 inches. 16*7 will be more suitable than the stockie 16*6, as toyo suggest 6.5~7.5 inches. to make the upgrade more meaningful, a light weight forged set would be ideal.

or, i could wait till the current set of tyres wear out, then go up to, say, 17*7.5 with 215/40/R17 tyres.

there are a few factors here, the trade-in value of stock rims, the ride comfort and performance between 205/45/R16 and 40 series R17 tyres, and most importantly, the right rim n right price.

any suggestions? thanks.

i'd suggest waiting if you'd really like 17's, but if you're happy to stay with 16's (i personally would be) then get them whenever

get the 17's, just my opinion but no good replacing stock 16's with aftermarket 16's

Bloodyhell Grim, you don't do things by halves! Dunlop SP9000 were extremely expensive when I was sniffing around for my wheel/tyre combination a couple months back.
And Cloudland, the fact you are already concerend about the ride comfort of 16 vs 17 rims means you know the answer already. My car came with 14's so I could only legally get 16's anyhow, but after experiecing the ride I wouldn't want 17s in anycase on a my current car. I think I have the softest performance ride I can get without getting too much feedback from the road, in most cases they are not much worse than the 14s, but when they are I really do notice it.

Personally I prefer the alloys offered on the J48 SP20's. ie: squarer spokes...

btw, if any1 here wonders, they are VERY VERY VERY good tires! i did a lap here on wet, outrunning a bmw with ok tires on dry!

hmm.....i like to think it has something to do with the driver......

well, he sucked on driving...
superstiff cars are SPOOKY on wet road.... it holds, it holds, IT HOLDS......SLIPS!!!! and it slips without telling! :D

Go the 17's. You'll regret it if you dont.

and Dunlops are good for the price - why skimp on tyres when they're the only thing between you and the road?

Hi GrimReaper, what's the width of your rims? 7.5 or wider? thanks.

ooh........hmm..... im not quite into that 6,5...7,5-thingys....

my rims is perfect for the 215/40-17-dunlops.
the edge of the tyre i in perfect allignment with the rim-edge, exept from the protective edge on the tire offcourse..
it gives the best tire-to-surface grip!
u must do the math on the rimwidth......

germans often use a wider rim than tire on their styled-beyond-recognition bmws, looks cool(they think), and it gives the car a stiffer handle in turns, cause the rubber is streched, BUT, the contactsurface of the tire against the surface is smaller, and the grip is not as good as a perfect allignment...
the other way, gives the car a soft wobbeling handling in turns, and looks bad too!

yes that's the point!

i guess yours would be at least 7.5" wide. ugh, let me know if you find out later.
