View Full Version : GB: [QLD] NGK Iridium spark plugs - Another Twiggy Special!

twilightprotege

would anyone be interested in a purchase of NGK iridium spark plugs?

this is the plug details :

NGK iridium plugs represent the ultimate evolution of spark plug technology and performance. The iridium center electrode is both stronger and harder than platinum. This allows NGK engineers to design an ultra-fine (0.6mm)center electrode reducing the voltage requirement for spark. This allows for a brighter, stronger spark from your existing ignition system. The ground electrode has a tapered cut at the firing end which reduces quenching for better flame core growth and increased ignitability. The combination of fine wire center electrode and tapered cut ground will increase performance, improve acceleration, and fuel efficiency.

I'll be getting the "5" heat range - standard replacement heat range. I can get different heat ranges if you require.

also, i'll be getting the "extended electrode" model. what that means is that the spark is located further down in the cylinder and therefore should yield a bit more power as the spark is closer to the middle of the chamber and ignites the fuel and air quicker (ie not as far to the furtherest part of the cylinder). also, you'll get a tiny tiny bump in compression ratio. from say 9.7:1 to 9.71:1

price will be apx $49 for 4. slightly cheaper than the last ones i sold due to the better exchange rate. price includes postage to you.

Yeah ive been running these plugs for over a year now and they never need cleaning :D
Even with my fuel pressure running at 10 psi higher then standard they dont foul up,well worth the money

SehnKhan
29-11-2004, 11:46 PM
This will be for all models yeah?

twilightprotege
30-11-2004, 12:01 AM
will fit all models, yes - v6 included.

you can double check here :
http://www.ngk.com.au/PartFinder/spark_plug_cars.php?PageMode=Model&Make=Mazda

whatever suits part no BKR#EIX-11 or ZFR#EIX-11 - the # is the heat range. 5 being the hottest. the higher the number the colder the plug. all of our NA engines here can handle 5 heat range. i have 6 heat range at the moment in my car and works fine, but will try 5 next to see which is the best heat range for my engine

SehnKhan
30-11-2004, 12:15 AM
Ahh k, mine comes up as Iridium Option BKR5EIX-11 1.1.

Guess it wont hurt to get some, if the group buy goes ahead put me down for a set.

Rupewrecht
30-11-2004, 12:21 AM
and mine is

10/89 - 06/94 Mazda 323 1.8L DOHC, Turbo BPB

Spark Plug Part No.
Recommended Plug BKR6E-11
Iridium Option BKR6EIX-11

twilightprotege
30-11-2004, 12:37 AM
yeah the ones i'll actually be getting is the ZFR#EIX-11. the ZF means the extended electrode which is a better idea. will work the same as the BK so no need to worry about that

so anyway, i'll start a list :

1. twilightprotege - 4 x heat 5
2. chicaboo - 4 x heat 5
3. SehnKhan - 4 x heat 5

rupe does that mean you're after some?

Mizda_Mazda
30-11-2004, 01:58 AM
I'll get 6x Iridium Option BKR6EIX-11(not for a astina for a R31), maybe 10 (extra 4 for the astina) depending on the cost per item at the end.

Whats the difference between ZFR and BKR if it works the same??? Theres got to be some sort of difference besdie a extended electrode.

30-11-2004, 12:22 PM
hey yeh i'm in for sure.. let me know when the buy is going through coz i might be keen to get 2 sets of them.... just ione question though are they the same as the BPT motor? will they handle the turbo?

twilightprotege
30-11-2004, 02:13 PM
ok, i'll break down the cost a little more than $49 for 4.

price per plug $10
shipping cost to oz and to you $9.

mizda - the BK's look like this :
http://www.ngk.com/productImages/1/90A.jpg
the ZF's look like this
http://www.sparkplugs.com/productImages/1/106A.jpg

see how the tip in the second one is higher than the first? that just makes the spark further down into the combusion chamber which i beleive is a better design.

sehnkhan - i can.

mazdabator - will fit the BPT yes, and turbo i'd suggest 1 or 2 heat ranges colder so you help reduce pre-detonation. and buy will happen in a week or 2 i guess. depends on interest. if you want 7 heat range it's only avail in the BK.

all - here's an explaination on heat ranges and other plug tech : http://www.ngk.com.au/tech_content.html

1. twilightprotege - 4 x heat 5 ZF
2. chicaboo - 4 x heat 5 ZF
3. SehnKhan - 4 x heat 5 BK
4. mizda - 10 x heat 6 BK
5. boosted - 6 x heat 6 ZF
6. sabrelli - 4 x heat 5 ZF

everyone just double check the above

skippy
30-11-2004, 04:23 PM
Say I didn't know what sparkies I need, where would I find out?

I have a 96 BA V6, which came with platinum ones and I've been quoted a fair bit higher than $10 each. So upgrade for less, ummm yeah I think I'll do it if they fit.

twilightprotege
30-11-2004, 04:39 PM
skippy, yep they'll fit fine.

1. twilightprotege - 4 x heat 5 ZF
2. chicaboo - 4 x heat 5 ZF
3. SehnKhan - 4 x heat 5 BK
4. mizda - 10 x heat 6 BK
5. boosted - 6 x heat 6??? ZF
6. sabrelli - 4 x heat 5 ZF
7. skippy - 6 x heat 6 ZF

boosted and skippy - i've put you down as heat 6 because the aussie ngk site says heat range 6

ezin
30-11-2004, 06:10 PM
Can u put me down for 4 x heat 5 ZF

So 5 is the hottest u can get cause i remember my car runs kind of rich so a hotter than standard plug would probably be better. I think ive got 6 in it atm and its due for new plugs, nice timing twilight.

Raven
30-11-2004, 06:45 PM
Ok put me down for 4 please!

But I have one question... I did the search and it says I need

Iridium Option BKR6EIX-11

witch are a 6 heat. so are the 5 (the ones your geting) going to be ok?

...If they are I'll be in for sure....

..Raven..

G'day Andy

I'm interested too.. the AUS website says Iridium Option BKR6EIX-11 1.1, I'm assuming the ZF units can be purchased too?

I'd assume also that heat range 6 would be the only available unit??

Quote from the NGK Website..
Heat range selection is vital to ensure optimum performance of spark plugs.

A spark plug's optimum operating temperature is between 450 degrees C and 870 degrees C. Spark plug tip temperatures outside this range can occur when an incorrect heat rating is selected. Viz:

When the heat rating is too high:

The spark plug temperature remains too low and causes deposits to build up on the firing end; the deposits offer an electrical leakage path that gives rise to loss of sparks.

When the heat rating is too low:

The spark plug temperature rises too high and induces abnormal combustion (pre-ignition): this leads to melting of the spark plug electrodes as well as piston seizure and erosion.

NGK Spark Plugs pioneered the use of a copper cored electrode in 1958, which enables a spark plug to heat up quickly and also dissipate heat quickly giving an ultra wide heat range. It is essential to use a spark plug that fits a specific engine and its conditions of use.

As spark plugs are positioned in the head of an engine, their analysis can give a good indication of how your engine is operating.

Cheers
Adam

Interestingly I looked up the Mazda 323 Astina Owners Manual (1997 - 8M37) and it quotes the following:

1.6 & 1.8 lt engines NGK BKR5E-11
2.0 lt engines NGK BKR6E-11

Gap for both plugs is quoted at 1.1 +0.0/-0.1 mm

I am interested in a set but now am unsure which heat rating is most applicable

nalawa
30-11-2004, 07:47 PM
Even more confusing I decided to look at the part finder for Japanese imports at NGK's Australian website and the results are:

1993.9 - 1997.9 MAZDA LANTIS 1800 - BP-ZE

Recommended Plug BKR5E-11
Iridium Option BKR5EIX-11

1993.9 - 1997.9 MAZDA LANTIS 2000 - KF-ZE

Recommended Plug BKR6E-11
Iridium Option BKR6EIX-11

So what's the difference between the import and the local 1800 BP motor?

ok, so far we have :

1. twilightprotege - 4 x heat 5 ZF
2. chicaboo - 4 x heat 5 ZF
3. SehnKhan - 4 x heat 5 BK
4. mizda - 10 x heat 6 BK
5. boosted - 6 x heat 6 ZF
6. sabrelli - 4 x heat 5 ZF
7. skippy - 6 x heat 6 ZF
8. ezin - 4 x heat 5 ZF
9. raven - 4 x heat 6 ZF
10. mrpayner - ???
11. nalawa - ???

ezin - yes 5 is the hottest regularly available. and yes because our cars run way too rich, a hotter plug will be good.

raven - what engine do you have?

payner - zf's are the same as bk's yes, just longer tip. zf's are available in 5 and 6 heat range, bk's are in 5,6,7 and probably 8 and 9

nalawa - the v6's require the 6 heat range, the 4's require the 5.

all - if you are not sure which heat range you need to get, take out one of your plugs and have a look at it. then compare it to this site : http://www.dansmc.com/spark_plugs/spark_plugs_catalog.html

find which picture matches the plugs most accurately. they you'll know for sure what heat range is best. at the moment, my 6 heat range plugs look like picture no 7 - "cold or rich but ok". this is why i'm going to try heat range 5.

hey yeh i've done a search on the ngk site for which plugs to use on the BPT and they suggested the

Recommended Plug BKR6E-11 1.1
Iridium Option BKR6EIX-11 1.1

so i'll grab 2 sets (8 plugs) if thats ok..

can you just double check these are the right ones for the bpt... it says the bpt and the bp motor use the same plugs.

Twilight Wrote

nalawa - the v6's require the 6 heat range, the 4's require the 5

For a BA 1.8L DOHC the NGK website recommends:

Using the SPARK PLUG FINDER : Cars, 4WDs & Commericals : Mazda : 323 Astina : 07/94 - 09/98 1.8L DOHC BP : BKR6EIX-11

Using the SPARK PLUG FINDER : Japanese Imports : Mazda : Lantis : 1993.9 - 1997.9 1800 BP-ZE : BKR5EIX-11

This was why I asked the question what the difference between the J-Spec and the Oz 1.8L BP engine was.

That said I am going to go with what the Owners Hand Book says, so I'll have a set of four (4) BKR5EIX-11 if you please Mr Organiser

Chris

PS. Anyone know how much a set of NGK Ignition leads will lighten my wallet?

tidy - basically the idea behind iridium plugs is so that the tip (as seen in the pictures) is very very thin (0.6mm). this is because iridium has a much higher melting point than other metals and is a good conducter of electricity. the thin tip enables the spark to be more focused at the top of it to go across to the other part of the plug. a more focused plug means more spark power. in old plugs (ie copper and platinum), the tips had to be bigger because they'd just melt away in a few hundred k's. for more info, see : http://www.densoiridium.com/irid_power.php & http://www.densoiridium.com/faq.php

Iridium is 6 times harder, 8 times stronger, and has a melting point 1200 degrees F higher than platinum

adelaidesp20 - probably heaps. mazda isnt cheap and they just use stock standard ngk plugs

323 - the zf's will be fine, so long as you're happy with the 6 heat range. and since that's what you have on the list, go for the ZF's. if you wanted a 7 or higher heat range, BK's is the only option

Twilight,

You have put me down for the ZFs when I actually wanted to buy 4 x BKR5EIX-11

Interestingly I have been trying to find more information on the difference between the ZF and BK series plugs. After searching NGKs site in Oz and the US with no luck or information I decided to call them and ask. After consultation with one of the reps I was told that you while the BK and ZF series plugs have the same physical specifications that because of the "projected gap" of the ZF plugs that they could/should not be used as a replacement for the BK series.

Sorry to muddy the waters at late notice but I thought it was important to pass on what NGK in Sydney had advised.

Therefore as I stated earlier I will go with what my owners manual states and that is the BKR5EIX-11

Thanks

Christopher

that's ngk being safe. i am 100% certain they will work on any of the mazda engines and work safely. afterall, guys on the www.msprotege.com forum use the ZF's all the time : see http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26377&highlight=zf%2A+ngk

ngk are probably just a little worried that because of the extra 2-3mm on the tip (at most), that might hit the piston.

ugh, any gb plan, or recommendation of ignition wires?

i'm looking on this:

MAGNECOR 8.5mm Ignition Wires ('01-'03 2.0L)

Ignition Cables feature Magnecor's exclusive 2.5mm high capacity Metallic Inductance EMI Suppressed conductor consisting of stainless steel wire precisely wound at 200 turns per inch over a ferrimagnetic core. The insulating jacket is made entirely of Magnecor's exclusive TC-1500-HS high strength aerospace grade silicone rubber, and its single layer construction will prolong the jacket's insulating ability by conducting extreme heat away from hot-spots that occur near over-the-limit heat sources.

mizda - well i'm just about to extend the deadline, see below

cloudland - i have those wires and they are good. i'm sure a GB could be arranged as i know another person who would definately get them.

everyone, this is very very important!!!

the GB deadline will be extended for the following reasons. chicaboo and i were today looking at our cars. we decided to check the plugs. anyway, checking back to the plug colour site, we found that his plugs was like colour 23 and mine was like colour 21 (i have heat range 6 atm). so gav is going to change his to heat 6 and i'm going to change mine to heat 7 for later and some heat 6 for now.

before i place this order, i want everyone to check their plugs and confirm what plug they want (in accordance with the temp site below) and mark their order as confirmed. if your plug is in the "best" or "but ok" range, you are safe to get the same temp plug as what you have now. if you have "but ok", you can choose to go colder or hotter depending on what it says. if you're anything else, you must go hotter or colder than what you have now. if you need help deciding this, tell me what your plug looks like and we'll work it out.

and the site is http://www.dansmc.com/spark_plugs/spark_plugs_catalog.html

so, pls do this asap! remember, ZF's are only heat 5 and 6, BK's from heat 5 to heat 9

1. twilightprotege - 4 x heat 7 BK, 4 x heat 6 ZF confirmed
2. chicaboo - 4 x heat 6 ZF confirmed
3. mizda - 6 x heat 5 ZF
4. boosted - 6 x heat 6 ZF

13. chimpy - 4 x heat 5 ZF
14. coldie123 - 4 x heat 5 ZF
15. snert - 4 x heat 5 ZF

another important note, heat 7+ is $11 per plug rather than $10 per plug

any questions, just ask!

skippy

Is this only if anything other than standard was used before?
Is this only necessary if the engine has been modded?
Mine is a stock car that was fleet owned and serviced by mazda so everything in there had better be stock.

would we need to check all sparkies or should they all be about the same?
cause I have no chance at reaching the ones at the back without some other tools.

How long is the GB extension?

FYI The manual says
NGK 1.8L BKR5E-11 2.0L BKR6E-11,

I am little nervrous about going from BK to ZF anything you can say to ease my mind, more detial the better, probably will go the ZF.

PS The sparkies in the V6 need replacing a 90k i am at 88.5 so mmmm perfect.

FYI : New Topic

New topic started started re ignition leads.
called (you'll never guess) Ignition leads.

twilightprotege

if you're happy with what heat range you have selected and you're happy not to worry about checking, then mark your name as confirmed. i just want everyone to be happy with their choice oh plugs.

if your engine is NA then 1 plug should be fine to check.

and the GB extension is until everyone confirms what they have ordered, so everyone dont forget to check and confirm

in terms of not being sure about going from BK to ZF, there is a way to be certain it will be fine. when you're taking the plug out to check it, make sure the engine is at TDC. measure the distance from the top of the piston to a point of your choosing. write the distance down. measure the length of the spark plug. minus that from the original distance. put the plug back in, then measure the distance from the top of the plug to your original top point and subtract that figure from the original figure. if you have more than 5mm left over, you'll be safe.

i will go and measure the sp20 engine shortly

twilightprotege
06-12-2004, 03:10 PM
the sp20 has 11mm clearance from the bottom of the plug to the top of the piston. it is certainly safe to go with ZF's.

i would say most engines would be around that sort of clearance with the BK plugs (which are 76mm long).

Going to speak to my resident mechanic tonite, been away the bastard.

Just wondering how important would this be to check the Colour of the current Sparkies for the standard unmodded car as the manual says straight up V6 = heat 6 no ifs no buts,
I can understand as you do things like turbo, CAI, RRFPR, just about anything this would require checking but the run of the mill should be fine as they are stock the engine is stock the engine gets nothing but stock input,
If they start to go bad as I do further mods I have no way telling from my stock engine is that not true.

Not being picky just like to understand.

I read it the other way around, that lower down the scale your plug is running colder than it should, i.e. you can safely go a hotter plug....

all - boosted will be confirming what heat range he wants on saturday. as soon as i know the GB will close. mazdabator this means you need to let me know asap what you want!

after the GB closes i will post the usual EFT details for payment. payment will be due by 18 december (ie after friday night's eft run). the spark plug order will be placed on saturday the 18th.

i will have to be firm on this due date for payment due to previous GB payment issues : if payment not received by then, your order will be cancelled.

On a previous list you had me confirmed for the BKs however on the last list that had been changed to ZFs. No major drama but just for clarity (and my peace of mind) I would like to order the BKR5EIX-11s

Cheers mate

Chris

forgot to add, if you want to pay me via credit card that's cool. payment is done via paypal. price needs to be +4% and whatever the conversion rate is on www.xe.com at the time of paying. so at the moment, 4 heat 6 plugs would cost $49aud + 4% = $50.96...convert to usd where the rate is 0.754478 = $38.45usd.

cloudland, yours will be +$5aud as well for postage to you in NZ.

Done, cheers twillight.

Um i was looking at the ngk listing site and it says the iridium option for mine is ZFR5FIX-11 and not ZFR#EIX-11 The difference between the E and the F plug im not sure about. I might change mine to heat range 5 if thats ok.
If ngk lists the hottest iridium plug as standard fittment im going to go with that, I thought u wanted a hotter plug as well to burn the rich mixture. But ngk say it wont change the mixtures

twilightprotege
17-01-2005, 05:03 PM
yeah a pretty deep socket. you can buy specific spark plug sockets that have rubber inside them so when you unscrew the plug it pulls the plug out with it.

update - 2nd package arived today. will be posting the 2nd lot tomorrow. by the looks of it the last lot will arive this week or early next. for those who are coming to the newy cruise - would it be ok if i just bring them down with me? (ie arden, jimbob, skippy, whoever else ordered plugs and is coming on the cruise?)

ezin
17-01-2005, 06:21 PM
They where exactly the same spec as the first iridiums that i put in, now 70k down the track i changed them and yes they needed changing, the gap had been eaten out to 1.25mm. I also put upper engine cleaner through the plug holes and let sit for an hour, and wow what a difference in response. Nice performance gain for little money.

hey just a quick question - i'm planning to install the plugs myself, dealer is booked out, service scheduled mid Feb - the question is, after the plug is screwed finger tight, should i continue 1/16 of a circle or 1/2~2/3?

on the package there is this illustration, with both 1/16 and 1/2~2/3 mentioned in step 2 and it's very vague i don't quite get it. thanks.

according to the pics, 1/2-2/3, however i never do it up that tight. i'd only ever go 1/4

go a 1/3 - thats what i've always done, as tightening too much can lead to cracking of the ceramic core

reason i say 1/3 is because you normally overtighten the plugs when they are so deeply inset like on our cars, as the difference between tight and spinning is nothings, as your socket is jammed in the core hole

hey i put the plugs in today, it feels silky smooth! thanks twilight!

i tightened slightly more than 1/2 turn after finger tight. i still wonders if anti-seize grease and dielectric grease are necessary.

He has some great Iideas from time to time. Has made my poor old tired engine feel almost normal, Still needs a swap for larger displacement though

Quick question: How cold should the engine be when putting the plugs in? I was a bit impatient today and put them in when the engine was still slightly warm... the valve cover was cool enough to touch by hand, but the plugs were still quite hot.
I torqued the new plugs to 20 ft lbs, which was around 1/3 turn after hand tightening.
Is this is ok? Or should I retourqe them tomorrow morning?
