Hey guys,

I need some help... I am thinking (no make that wanting!) to change the stock speakers in my 2002 SP20 and add a sub and amp as well. But I don't want to change the interior too much ie no holes so I will be putting the speakers in the standard pods in the doors. Oh and I don't want to change the HU either. Do you know if I can get a sub and amp connected to the standard HU or not? If so can you please give me your opinions on what are the best subs/amps? Thanks. Personally I am a pioneer girl but am willing to go for something different if it is better and cheaper.

Thanks heaps :)[/color:post_uid9]

Not sure about connecting a sub to the standard HU, I'll leave that to the other guys.

I'm looking at going the same way as you, and at the moment, I'm leaning towards JBL amp/sub. I've got some JBL 6x9's in the rear (soon to have 7x5's in the front doors). You can't argue with their history of concert equipment, how they carry that off into the car audio world, well I haven't heard any bad reports yet......[/color:post_uid0]

is not having the 5x7s yet, on your part, or the store's??

cause for me, I had to wait 3 months to get my 5x7s and it wasn't even the ones i wanted, cause i was fed up with waiting.

hi supergirl,
my first mod was changing the stock speakers as well, and boy was it a great improvment. You'll be able to hear sounds that u wouldn't usually hear with the stocks ones. Haven't got a sub and amp yet, as my orginal plan was to keep it as stock lookin as possible, but now i want more POWER! hehehe..[/color:post_uid0]

You could always buy 5x7 speakers, some tweets and a crossover seperately ( or it's easy to make ur own crossover, its just a coil and a capacitor ) if you are having trouble getting 5x7 splits.

Or Hertz is a good brand and have a set of 5x7 splits. Available at www.rmaudio.com.au

I didnt want the trouble of making door pods and stuff, just wanted it to fit in the original door holes nice and easy :p

Nah, I couldn't afford to replace all 4 speakers in one go. I know the local audio shop (I fix their printers :;): ), so I get a good deal. They normally keep the JBL GTO series in stock.[/color:post_uid0]

after recently installing an 8" bass tube(they are a little suss) and basicly taking apart the interior of the car to connect it up, i discovered how "****"(compliments of my sister) the stock speakers are. they are flimsy cardboard things that....yeah....flimsy cardboard things. u can't get any decent volume on the bloody things, and it suprises me that yu get the sound quality that you get from them.

and supergirl, u'd be suprised how much work it takes to install the stuff. took us the whole bloody day. if you want to improve the audio system, do it right the 1st time and get pioneer or kenwood, or something a little tiny bit cheaper but with real "oomph". like the kicker square 15" subs. they put out 750 watt rms, which may start to get expensive after u buy the sub, the box, the amp....[/color:post_uid0]

Yeah i blew the front (cardboard)speakers up in my car soon as i amped em :O
With my install it took most of the day,me and a mate of mine pulled out the seats/carpet etc and laid the cables and stuff down properly so it wouldnt have to be done again :p
It pays to do it properly the first time :;):[/color:post_uid3]

TalenT :

yes u can fit 6" in the front. quite a few of us have done exactly that !

although you will need a wooden baffle, which you can make yourself, or buy from somewhere like autobarn. The baffle is just a solid 5x7 size piece of wood with a 6" hole in the middle to hold the speaker and still be able to screw into the 5x7 holes in the door.

Sandyman, I agree. The standards are just cardboard, and I'm amazed at the sound I got from them, esp, after installing a Kenwood HU.

Now have 6x9 JBL GTO in the rear, and they a BITCH to put in!

I'm going to get the front installed for me (hehe), and at the same time get some sound deadening crap in the front doors. I don't mind paying people to do my dirty work. :p[/color:post_uid0]

why must we be tormented for wanting to be different :(

here is something i heard from a mate:

his cousin's friend's brother has an astina hatch (and yes, i told my mate to tell him about this site if he saw him) and (according to my friend) has about 2500 watts worth of subwooffers in the boot.
i'm not sure if u can get something like that unless u really scrounge for it, but....
i think u may have trouble fitting it in the boot too...[/color:post_uid0]

If you want detailed advice on SP20 stereo mods I have well and truly "been there" supergirl and can set you straight.

Go pm if you wanna, at length, or join the fun at www.caraudioaustralia.com and get right into it

You can use the stock HU if you must so long as the power amp you use has appropriate inputs and most do altho aftermarket HU with RCA output IS better.

There is good space under front seats to hide amps.

A Kicker square 12 is plenty for a sub if you port it :)[/color:post_uid0]

Hey Guys

Thanks for all the help. I have decided to just stick with updating the stock speakers at the moment and then maybe in the future add a sub.

By the way does anyone know what are the largest size speakers i can fit in the standard door pods in a 2002 SP20? I've got some new (only used for a week in my old car) Pioneer 4 way 6x9's any chance they will fit??? Without a need for an amp.

Thanks heaps.

PS I saw an 89 Astina hatch with a subwoofer and 2 7x10's mounted on the rear parcel shelf. It was seriously bent in the middle doubt you would get good bass from that set up...

Firstly, I think it was 5" (5*7??) in the front and 5.25" (5.25*7) in the rear i was told could fit in the front..but Chris will clear that up.

Secondly...Chris, even 1 sub is too much for me these days... reasoning.... 1 soundstream SPL12 + bandpass box + 300WRMS amp running it + AE82 corolla sx hatch = no more subwoofers EVER! Not only did it rattle the hinges on the hatch, but made me seriously deaf.. I chose not to deal with the hassle!

Sorry for insulting you with the no more subs ever remark, but it was fun whilst it lasted.

Cheers,
Bill[/color:post_uid0]

The SP20 has the rather curious combo of 5x7s in front doors and 6.5" dia in rear doors.

A 6.5" can be put in the front with the use of an mdf spacer as an adaptor. A 6x9 is a NO WAY proposition. Sorry, supergirl, that won't happen.

Any "adapting" in the front doors will most likely require a bit of slicing the inner of the door trim. That is, there is a moulding on the inside of the door trim which fits exactly around the 5x7 speaker so to use anything else esp something with a longer throw (like my Morels with 3" voice coils....) you need to do this.
No biggie, just a Stanley knife and 30 seconds....

As for sub bass, there is bass and there is bass.
Done properly, it should complement and integrate with the rest of the sound of the system, NOT overpower it.

A pair of 7x10s on rear shelf AND a sub is just plain stupid in my opinion. Rear speakers should just be "fill", the front speakers are the Main Attraction and provide stage and image.

A correctly set up system should integrate well enough that the sub bass will appear to come out of the front footwells even tho the enclosure is mounted in the boot/hatch. All in the installation.

And yes, mine does :)

And the effect is awesome, once heard cannot be lived without.[/color:post_uid0]

Totally agree Critter, that's the type of setup I'm gunning for. I don't want the bass overpowering everything, just complimenting the standard speakers.[/color:post_uid0]
