Mazda has officially endorsed plans to build a rotary-powered RX-7.

With the Mazda RX-8 officially on sale in its major markets, Mazda is now turning to its next sports-car project. The company has officially endorsed plans to build a rotary-powered RX-7 replacement.

In the footsteps of the 1978 original, it will be a sleek, lightweight two-seater. Some platform, suspension and driveline elements will be borrowed from the RX-8 parts bin. Although expected to launch in 2006, a concept may be unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show next month.

An amped version of the Renesis RX-8 engine is likely to power the RX-7. With wider and stiffer rotor housings, a higher redline, and displacement out to about 1.6 litres, Mazda plans on output of around 300hp in the normally aspirated form. It appears there will be no turbocharged version. Fear not, though, as for the first time ever, Mazda is working on a supercharged rotary option for RX-7.

The production car, code-named J77, is likely to be shorter and wider than the RX-8. There may even be a cabriolet variant with a fabric or folding hard-top hood.

WTF would you supercharge a rotary capable of some 9000rpm? They must be going to use some gay sort of centrifugal supercharger? Only advantage of one of those over a turbo is going to be the lack of heat, those superchargers still exhibit spool lag too...
The lower front bumper is hideous too, nothing a nice bodykit couldn't fix though.

Ahh yes, but a supercharger gives a smoother power band, AND not everybody has one. It seems just about every second person has a Turbo (not that I have anything against a turbo).
I'd like to stick one on the Hardtop, but it would take quite a lot of work...besides, I don't have a V6 :(

Rumors I've heard are that Mazda and Jaguar (both Ford companies) have tested a Miller cycle version of the Jag V8 and the Rx-7 was a candidate for production.

Many countries have outlawed new cars with pop-up lights (I have no opinion, well on this topic anyway)

i personally cant see this happening ... the RX is an evolutionary series. the rx8 is here and rx9 witll be next. as good as the rx7 was ... everything comes to a end at one time or another! it had become to expensive for joe blow anyway ... saying that i will be getting one for my next car :D

they have banned pop-up lights cause people think they are a hazard to pedestrians.....if you live in NSW i bielieve you cannot regesiter a car that has pop-up headlights from scratch ....the only way to keep them is to re-register before ur car runs out of rego....otherwise you have to convert them so they no longer pop-up......really stupid if u think bout it because if a pop-up light is gunna hit a padestrian.....i would say the padestrian is screwed regardless of weather lights are up or not.....really is stupid but hey just got keep rego up:)

Mazdamaik you can re-register the car in NSW with pop-ups. It applies to new cars sold eg banning sales of new cars with pop-ups.

I thought the Senku and Crossport concept cars had potential for a new car, but this is definitively the winner. To bad the engine power will hit my wallet hard thanks to norwegian taxes.

Pop ups deemed hazardous because it's projecting above the bonnet and tends to rip parts off people as they go flying over your car.

In case you don't remember, in the late 80's and early 90's both merc and jag had to stop making cars with emblems on the front, only when they developed them in such a way that on impact they snap off/fold out of way/disfigure rapidly did they allow them to start putting them on cars again.

Having said that a series 6/7 RX-7 is gonna be my next car. Sexseist beists on the road. Either that or an r34 skyline. Fugly as hell but brutal too.

Rx-7 is/was the rotary sports coupe.
The Rx-2/3/4 all came with 2 door and 4 door options. I think we will see an Rx-7 before we see a new Cosmo *Grumpie*
