howdy.
well spybot-s&d is failing me a bit at the moment. my latest friggen **** on the computer gets a phrase like the "age" in message above where i write this, changes the text to a link saying "sponsored link" on the status bar and "free lifetime password - no charge ever for porn!!" (man i gotta click that).
so what can i get. i want it to be free, or something where i can easily find a serial etc.
so what's the go?
and that annoyance is www.hotsearchbar.com

google "hotsearchbar" and there should be links as to how to remove it manually

Yeah someone would've made a registry hack to remove that by now I'd say. I had a bad Malware infestation last year due to my newnessnous with friggen WindowZ SP2 and it's stupid pop-up blocker, and allowed something which I thought was something more innocent (ie: active X update) since it blocks everything... OOPS!
Stop looking at porn sites Andy! (use newsgroups instead)...

yeah i've removed it now. took a bit of regedit work.
try the new microsoft antispyware program. available from their site. its worked very well for me and I've heard good feedback from others.
I've also used Adaware which has worked well for removing things like that.

MS Antispyware is really good, especially if you use IE (*Shudder*). Otherwise, you do hjave to use a variety of antispyware tools cause there isn't one tool that will find and remove ALL spyware. I use a combination of Ad-Aware, Spybot and MS Antispyware.
Oh, keep them all up to date, obviously.

Doe sthis MS Antispyware program stop pop-ups?? My old man gets agro at IE [i use Firefox for this reason], and would like to make his internet use a bit easier for him..
HERE (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=321cd7a2-6a57-4c57-a8bd-dbf62eda9671&displaylang=en) is the linky.. but it appears to be only available to genuine and legitimate versions of windows.. aaw crap! ;)

awww crap indeed!
no its not. it gives you the option to download without checking authenticity.
( not that i would use an illegitimate version of windows of course ;) )
umm it will kill ads that arnt supposed to come up. some are adware programs on your computer and some are actually ads from the page ur looking at.
it should kill the adware stuff and I'm sure there's an addon you can get for IE which adds popup blocking and tabbing support.

yep use more than one, keep your AV up to date, and of course have a better firewall than the microflop one... like zonelabs zone alarm - available from www.zonelabs.com
my fav malware i got was the one that changed the dialup number....
hit my parents computer a week after i moved out... only found out about it when primus rang us up to say "umm excuse me, but you ring a lot of 1900 numbers... are you a pervet and are you aware of it?"

Hehehe.. yeh.. I realised that when i clicked it. ;) Suffice to say I am now going to set it up on the oldies login..

adam, there is also a number of plugins, and skins that make firefox appear as though it were IE.... just a thought - worked for my oldies puter... funnily enough their spy count has decreased lots... mum and dad couldn't handle another browser :p showed them !!
hmmm and this anti spy is worrying.. did a spy search with adaware, and S&D yesterday, so far microfloppy has found 13 items, and over 130 bad registry keys
but the big question here: doesn't this program in itself show the reliabilty of the microflop system?

Strangely, there's some things in firefox that just don't work correctly [or like IE does anyway].. My oldies mainly use the internet for their investment portfolio, and firefox doesn't like one site inparticular.. oh well..

now try lavasoft adaware - you'll probably have more things that don't get picked up

Unfortunately if you have an infestation of Malware, etc... Adaware is practically useless since it is generally targeted by the more severe codes. This means the new Malware won't let you upgrade your Adaware or go to the Lavasoft website to download the latest version to get the required definition files to remove them!
I've found Spybot is not affected by these codes and will happily elimenate this Malware. But I also find Spybot a pain in the arse since it does System Restores points all the time! This takes up precious space from your HDD, go on, try a dozen or so S.R.s and see what happens to your available space... I limit my S.R. space to 5% now.
I tried the MS Antispyware program, it didn't find anything that Adaware didn't, but I have to admit sometimes a second pass with Spybot will find some extra things the others won't...

you can turn system restore off...
but hell when you've got over 200gb to play with you tend to not care too much :p
dave, try changing the d/l settings to open pdf in reader, rather than embedded... also try d/l sun java for firefox
it is opening in reader and I already have java for firefox. but thanks :)
does any1 else else find that if you put a wrong url into firefox it freezes up like 10-15 sec before saying the domain doesnt exist? mine and many people at work have the same problem.

dave - i think your alone :p
maybe its caused by our DNS or proxy :(
only firefox does it tho.
gets really annoying after making a minor typo.

I find Firefox takes just as long as IE to tell me it can't find the address.
Never rely on the MS firewall. It was not set to protect the dial-up connections by default when SP2 was first released... duh !! How bloody stupid is THAT? Another calssic stuff up to Micr$haft.
