After just two days ago getting my first ever speeding fine and losing half my liceanse I decided to look up the penalty structure,FOR NSW Only.

It has changed recently now any fine for under 30kmph over the limit will get 3 points (or 6 in double demerits)

Details below

Offence Light Vehicles Mid Range Trucks Coaches & Heavy Vehicles

Exceed speed limit by:
Demerit Points Fine Fine Fine
Not more than 15 km/h
3 $75 $199 $199

More than 15 km/h but not more than 30 km/h
3 $208 $313 $313
More than 30 km/h but not more than 45 km/h
4 $579 $579 $926
More than 45 km/h
6 $1,597 $1,597 $2,398

A one-month licence suspension or minimum disqualification period applies for any driver caught travelling more than 130km/h but not more than 140km/h in 110km/h zone (this offence does not apply to drivers restricted to a maximum speed limit of 100km/h or less such as learner, provisional or heavy vehicle drivers). This will apply in any case not covered by suspensions or disqualifications listed above. In addition, a traffic infringement notice fine of $208 ($313 for drivers of vehicles greater than 4.5 tonnes GVM) and 3 demerit points apply to this offence.

Offence Court Maximum Fine Licence Disqualification
Exceed speed limit by:
Light Vehicles Heavy Vehicles
Not more than 30 km/h
$2,200 $2,200 -
More than 30 km/h but not more than 45 km/h
$2,200 $2,200 3 months (minimum)
More than 45 km/h
$2,200 $3,300 6 months (minimum)

On declared public holiday long weekend periods in NSW the demerit points for all speeding, seat belt, child restraint and helmet offences are doubled, and all other offences increase by one demerit point.

FYI,
I got done doing 72 in a 50 on a straight four lane road, grrrrrrrrrr. I thought it was 60 so was following my usual about 10 over rule, have now found out doing 3 over is the same points as doing 29 over so that rule is currently being revised.
Was on the back way to Crows Nest from Lane Cove just past the shops on the down hill.
Only good thing is how easily I could of been doing 8 more and lost my licesance

But once again GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Interesting that truck drivers caught speeding never lose points than their fraction of the weight conterparts,
Sure they pay more in fines but they make more profit if early.

Recollections of a Truck giving me about 15 secsonds of horn as I pulled onto the freeway at Asquith going about 120 cause he was in left lane and I was well infont, I kept speeding up from 110 he kept gaining on me, he went past at about 130 atleast. Displaying his loverly 100 kmh speeed limited sticker.

Is this a national points/fine/disqualification structure, or is it just for sunny NSW?

I figured as much, atleast it's not as bad as the fishing laws. My mates tell me that QLDers are a favourite easy picking for something or rather down in NSW...

Thank god... I think it's still 1 point for under 10km's here in Vic

count yourself lucky you still have licence :p ... i have a good behaviour licence ... can loose only 1 point for a 12 month period ending dec 15th

saying that a forkhead at work got booked on sat night ... 171 in a 100 zone and he blew 0.1 ... he will be out for a year at least

QLD demit structure

Exceeding the speed limit by:

13 or under
1 point - $150

20 or under
3 points - $200

30 or under
4 points - $250

40 or under
6 points - $lots (350???)

more than 40
8 points - $700 - six months suspension

you can not acculimate more than 12 demerit points on an open licence or 4 on a provisional licence, in any 3 year period. If you do you are offered 3 month suspension of your licence or 12 month good behaviour bond, for which period you may recieve one only 1 demrit offence.

If you get caught doing more than 40 over you can suspension preiods for excessive speed and accumulation of more than 12 points can be run similtaniously. ie 6 month + 3 months = 6 months ... but only for speeding!!

As far as the trucks go ... nothing is going to slow them down until the trucking industry is regulated and i seriously believe that will be impossible to achieve ... yes there are bad accidents involving trucks, but far more people kill others thru drink driving ... so all you can do is use them to your advantage ... last time i went to sydney i hithed a ride behind a kamikazi truck ... he knows where the radars are (good ol CB's) and will slow accordingly, you will save fuel, and makes driving a lot less tiresome

/end rant :p

Fark, another reason to stay in QLD, even though I've only had one speeding fine in 11 years so far though...

I am yet to get a speeding fine.

I had 1 fine for not displaying P plates (it was a long weekend and the cops pulled me over cause they were bored).
That cost me 3 points (1 per plate and 1 for it being double demerits weekend)

The other was for the accident I was in before I got my Astina.
Failure to giveway at giveway sign. It was supposed to only be 2 points but it was 3.

hey there

On the subject of fines, dont forget the good old "Undue noise by manner of operation" $240 and 2 points. I got done for squealing my tyres around a roundabout and attracting a grumpy coppers attention!

Is there a maths test before you become a cop?

Do you get Double demerits in QLd? Vic?

So failing to have P plates on the car only adds an extra 1 point.

Yeah but in Victoria you pay tolls to drive on the roads and soon will pay $10 levy on city parking.
It's an incentive to use an outdated, inadequate public transport system.

buhahahahaha ... you have ot be kidding ... and P plates ... what are they :p it was only jan 31st that L plates became compolsary  and its only been about 2 years since they started the whole roadworthy thing with selling a car ... still no pits or instpections ... providing i never sell my car it will never get checked ...

you will love this one ... i put my N8 plates on in July last year ... did everything properly ... went and surrended the old plates and all that poop ... then i went in about 1 month ago i walked into qld transport to get my boat licence (ahhh me land lovers). The lady at the desk ask me if i wanted to pay my upcoming rego (not that i had the money :p) on my mazda 314-EVE ... 8 months after i changed the plates they still hadnt changed them on the computer ... and i get stopped at least once a month for "random inspections"  go figure

On the other side of the coin a mate of mine last month went to pay his registration and was told that he had handed in the plates that were currently residing on his car and had to prove to them that he hadnt.?????????
