i was taking a drive with a couple of mates the other night, and one of my mates has a proton satria gti. all hes had done to the car is extractors and the exhaust. the car is nice, quick enough (but i still beat him with the astina, cause his changes where shocking and the car was kinda sluggish off the start), but what really was fukn nice is the sounds it makes.

as we were driving along side by side he changes gears and i was amazed the car sounded like he had slapped a turbo on. the way the car sucked in the air was amazing. i could have sworn it was a turbo if i didnt know better.

now my question is, why does his car do that, and how can i get mine to sound the same??

thanx people

Sandyman: If you were with them when they were throwing rocks then you need a thorough slapping. Thats just stupidity. Trying to **** up someone elses ride is just pointless. If you weren't with them, then ignore this.[/color:post_uid0]

we were in sydney and no one threw any rocks at us.

and im with sehnkhan on this: lil ****s that throw rocks at cars deserve all they fukn get, the driver deserves to be able, by law, to get the fuk out and smash the lil ****. my friends car got hit by rock one day when some lil ****s were chuckin rocks from an overpass. it hit his windscreen and smashed it and he fukn nearly had a huge accident. seriously its a harsh thing to do. why dont they just go throw rocks at trains and other government property like the old days. hehehehe[/color:post_uid0]

i saw a serious case of roadrage today out the front of my place. some elderley driver i think cut off 2 guys in a lancer. anyhoo i think there was almost an accident. both cars screech to a halt. the lancer 50 meters up from the elderley car. the passenger in the lancer gets out and runs full pelt towards the other car then starts jumping on the bonnet! the lady obviously terrified reverses and the guy falls off. she takes off down a side street then the driver of the lancer quickly follows not even bothering to check if his mate is ok.

the moral of the story i think is to not buy a lancer. oh and dont roadrage too.

cheers mike[/color:post_uid0]

i love the moral mike!!!

hey u no for the oldies in the other car, apperently insurance companies wont cover u for that kind of damage- malicious damage. its like if somebody intentionally smacks ur car up with a pipe or throws a toilet at ur car or something like that, most insurance wont cover that if u cant prove who did it. i dunno something that just came 2 mind. its got really no point. but thanx for listening.[/color:post_uid0]

That's Fukd.
Getting back to the topic, did he change his air intake?
I was thinking of putting a pod on mine too get that air sucking sound & hopefully a bit better performance.
Dunno what it is, but where the black plastic 2" pipe goes into the manifold, there's a kind of electronic box.
What do you do in regards to this if you put an after-market pipe & pod on?
What are the decent brands to go for & what r they worth/where do you get them.
I saw them in AutoBahn, but they look ****e![/color:post_uid0]

nah he hasnt done anything to the intake. and it still makes that awsome sound!!!![/color:post_uid0]

i didn't do it, and i don't know who did. and i oppose people ****ing up others cars. its bloody slack. anyway, this car had real nice exhaust, red lether trim, and probably more stuff, but thats all i saw of it.[/color:post_uid0]

Olympic I think I know what the noise is. A mate of mine has a Ford Laser Lynx and has cut a hole into the bottom of the airbox [before the filter]. When he accelerates he gets that mad sound too. It does sound quite good as he doesn't have an aftermarket fartbox exhaust on it. To me, the engine noise is more important than the noise of an exhaust.

I'd imagine that if you modified the bottome part of the box, maybe make a larger pipe leading into it or better yet, have 2 pipes leading in *:D *You may get a similar noise [hopefully]. I'm not sure though, so can the other guys here elaborate??

sounds like you're describing what i did to my old airbox, Adam. I routed two CAI pipes to the bottom of my airbox (after removing the old piping), but left a gap between the pipes and the enlarged opening at the bottom of the box. Made quite a difference to the sound, and gave it a bit of a WRX-like sound too.

and it's not the point that i probably negated any advantage of a CAI by leaving a gap. it sounded cool, so there :p :p[/color:post_uid0]

so does that setup give u the crazy blow off sound?? and adam when u say a hole in the airbox b4 the filter do u mean in the tube flowin into the airbox, cause i cant see where else u really mean.

and sandy we werent saying u did it mate, we all no ur a good boy. and his cars got blue leather trim. not a bad job all up.

I live on a dirt road which can get kinda dusty.
If I cut a hole in the bottom of the box, will it screw up my filter or motor?
What is exactly is a fartbox? Is that the same, but made with a hole?[/color:post_uid0]

mrpayner
05-03-2003, 04:34 AM
Olympic, the hole wasn't in the piping but the actual box itself. There's plenty of space around the airbox to do this.

Asterix, sorry mate. What I meant about a fartbox exhaust was the noise from the tailpipe. It's not acutally a thing you ask for [I hope!!] Although my car is essentially standard [yep, still standard after 3 years of ownership], I plan on putting on a new sporty exhaust that will be very quiet. But it'll still look the goods!! Hope that helps you

Hey Dan,

I should've asked. Have you got any of that piping left?? Seeing as you had 2 holes into the airbox, is it heat sheilded?

Thanks mate.

hehe u should see what hanging round dan can do to a person. within a week of owning my astina id met dan. Within 2 weeks of getting my astina i had CAI happening. you really dont need to be employed to get CAI happening. (i was unemployed when i got mine done!) Its one of the cheapest mods going round :) just go for a K&N panel filter. around $75 and some pipe courtesey of dan!

Sounds like a plan!!

I just got back from an interview at a recruitment agency. The position is for Tradelink [Barter style business]. Sounds bloody good, the dude at the agency set up an interview with the Tradelink people for this afternoon. Woohoo! Finally, a job prospect that looks the goods. But, If i don't get this position, hopefully the job at Centrelink will come through good too!

Fingers crossed

What does CAI stand for? And what some of performance difference does it make?
Will it make the car much louder as mine would want to get too much louder as it is![/color:post_uid0]

sik astina
06-03-2003, 04:21 AM
CAI stands for Cold Air Induction. all it is, is abit of pipe running from the front of your car to your air box to give it cooler air. should give abit of a louder sucking noise.

With my head under the bonnet & revving it I could hear a definate sucking noise.
Once I was driving, I couldn't hear it over the exhaust.
I'm sure it had a bit more giddy-up though.[/color:post_uid0]

heheheh - pics from the last one at the bottom (http://www.astinagt.com/melbcruise.html)

usually get a couple of astinas together and rip the front bars off, route some piping and put a better filter in.

oh, and hack a hole in Dogo's front bar :p[/color:post_uid0]

where you get your piping from dan... I've looked everywhere for some decent pipe, but its either got bloody holes in it or the diameter is too small to be practical.
