Custom parcel shelf - anyone tried? - Building one for 6x9 speaker install...

[color=#000000:post_uid0]My stock speakers in my 2K model Astina are fairly crappy!
I wanted to look @ replacing the old with new. The speakers are in all 4 doors. Don't see the point in putting 6inch in each door as the bass isn't there.
I also don't want to go to the expense of installing a sub (taking up 1/2 the boot) & amp. Was thinking of 6inch splits in front & 6x9's in rear.
I will have to carve & carpet a custom shelf out of MDF as I did for my Seca, but it was a pain in the arse!
Not that I've looked at the shelf yet, but has anyone done it with the latest shape Astina?[/color:post_uid0]

[color=#000000:post_uid0]i had a crack at doing it myself for my 95 astina, used 18mm mdf, came out a treat, now selling it due to the purchase of a sub, dont know whether it will fit ur car, but i say have a go at making it

[color=#000000:post_uid0]18 sounds a bit thicker than you may need and would add some decent weight to the car. would certainly be very solid tho !

for a shelf from scratch, you could happily go with 12mm. But I suppose it depends on the weight of your speakers and if you want to mount anything else to it like an amp or some crossovers on the underside.

btw, mounting amps upside-down is generally not reccomended but many ppl have done it with no troubles :;):

If you are not concerned about the weight of the wood, I reckon look at finding the thickness that makes the shelf fit flush against the back of the chairs and the side walls. so it doesnt appear to be a lump :)

[color=#000000:post_uid0]18 mill will sit flush, as the lip it must marry into is 20mm. Once I add the carpet over the MDF I should be spot on.
I picked up a nice pair of Infinity 6x9's after Sunday's Healsville cruise.
Just have to get off work early one day this week to buy some MDF & off I go.
As I stated in the thread, the stock speakers in the BJ suck!

or Lincraft or other cloth shops may be good. *Some hardware stores such as Bunnings have speaker carpet too.[/color:post_uid0]
