i was just reading through a story on fullboost : http://www.fullboost.com.au/news.php?newsId=365 : talking about mazda safety. anyway, at the end of the story it says mazda expects to sell something like 60000 vehicles in 2005.
and this comes to the discussion. are you happy that mazda is getting popular? are you happy that your model isnt like the mazda 3? (ie they are like letterboxes. every household has one)
my opinion is it doesnt matter how polular mazda gets, nor how unpopular they get. i guess it's probably good they are getting a lot of the market share because older cars are worth slightly more now?
but i am very glad in the sense that the sp20 isnt like letterboxes. i like it's uniqueness and there are almost no "oh that car is pretty" owners of the car - ie ditsy women.
bah ...all i see are 40 year old women driving them ...

the more popular it gets more bigger companys will start making performace parts, body its and so on, it sorta would be a win/loose situation.
i like havin my car cos it is fairly rare, i get asked all the time what is it, someone even thought it was a toyota.

yeah it is a win loose situation. no aftermarket support for our cars, heaps already for the 3's and it'll only get larger - lots larger!

These cars are getting popular cos they're sexy! 90% of cars are brought cos of colour and sexy appeal. Mazdas have big sex appeal BG, BA and 6s and 3s, RX7s and 8s and MX5s and 3s... Sorry BJ owners... You ain't got any.

Thats the whole reason why i wanted and a BG or BA Astina cos of the looks and they stood out from the rest of the pack, and you still hardly see any of those models on the road but you always see these bloody SP20 with old ladys behind the wheel putting along.

because BJs were a hell of a lot cheaper!
BA's were very expensive at the time of release
just think of it this way - we were the trendsetters that got in when it was still a cult thing - before it got overexposed ;)
or something :p

the bg sp was very expensive when it came out. and it didnt and still dosent look like any other car out there. also inside the car was very good for its time.
if you compare it to other cars, the astina is kind of like a 1988 RX7 in looks ish and similar to a porche. would be better if the new mazda 3 was based off the BG or bj :D

Don't start me about the average age of Mx-5 owners,
People get old and realise, god dammit I want a good car so they get a mazda
can't blame mazda for that,
Few days ago parked my 96 hardtop next to a mates 02 lancer, his looked WAY Older, respray helped of course but mostly it is the shape.

that's like the series 6 rx7's and the early 90's 929's. still very modern designs.

I think Mazda did well with most of their designs since the BG and sr6 RX7, except the BA sedan (laser copy) and those gay looking 626s were a problem, atleast the instrument cluster in them fits the BJs...

Yeah the sedan thing, I didn't know that was a Protegé too. I thought the BA HARDTOP looked like the batmobile back in the day (funny saying that now) and I couldn't get past the huge taillights, but now I think the industry has caught up to their styling from back in those days, and they are very attractive in this day and age.

Ive had two people in the last two weeks ask if my BA hatch was the new version of a mates BJ sedan. Niether were car heads (obviously) but it still made me smile. Obviously im biased, but i still think that the ba hatch is up there with the series 6-8 RX-7 as one of the best looking cars ever. Even the earlier RX-7 (and the new RX-8) were very modern cars for the era. I remember reading years ago about the BA being ranked 2nd in a list of best looking cars in history (after an old Ferrari) by some car mag. I think i read it on the net, anyone know anything about this?

hehe thats ok gav, i wont have to hurt you now ;)
i remember a thing in Hot4s about modern cars that would become classics, and the BA Hatch was one of them. i agree!
