I currantly have an xbox and 7 inch in dash monitor in my car, and i want to put another monitor in the back. Can the signal from the xbox (video only, audio goes straight to aux in the head unit) be split with a normal rca splitter with enough power to display on two monitors, or am i looking at a rather expensive video splitter (jaycar, $129)? I use the xbox as a dvd player, so i dont mind if both monitors only play the same signal at the same time. Might just spend the extra bucks and get a dvd player with two outputs. Anyone tried this?

I can't say for sure because I have not tried it.
But I would assume it would work fine with the RCA splitter.

wow another xbox user.
I didnt realise there was another xbox-in-car member here.

whats your setup like ?

I'm running a single 7" indash foldout monitor and fibre optic link into my surround processor, powered by a 300W inverter.

main use is xbmc feeding from about 60gig+ mp3s and also a few ripped dvds

yeah ive just sold my in-dash monitor today acually. Going for 2 x 8 inch in the sunvisors, plus maybe a flip down in the back (or two 7s in the headrests) and maybe one in the boot between the subs. I only really use the xbox for music (have like 80 odd albums on it) cause it beats carrying cd's around. Sometimes play games, but pretty rare. My ex used to watch dvds on long trips, it was great, she had headphones on, and i had the stereo blarring!!! Im not taking advantage or dolby (yet) but its very high on the list of things to do (wanna put a center channel in the factory location.). Pretty well starting the video side of things from scratch again after today, (ps2 slim comes tonight, hopefully, with the monitors here next week.)

sounds good.

2x8" in the visors is what I want too.

here's 2 old screen grabs of mine. I can't remember which visualisation that is but I've been using Mildrop ported from Winamp recently.

cost me about $70 for the chip ( Xenium ICE - www.teamxodus.com ) from memory. Now I'd posibly get a SmartXX or Xecutor I think

I've also got a small LCD screen that I'm intending on putting into the car. It'll display track, time etc without having to look at the main screen

example of how it will look ( except mine will be backlit blue )

How will that interface with the xbox? Are you doing it yourself?

The LCD on the XBOX is part of the chip mod.. there's soldering points that you can attach the wires to and then you'll get the readout. Pretty funky.

modern chips have sockets on the chip to let you plug you plug things like LCDs in.

or you can get a LCD-MOD addon (http://quantronics.com.au/?_s=products&_c=xbox&_sc=acc&_g=&prod=XBOX-LCDMOD) if it doesnt

And this is the fun part. The head lining is very fragile, and if yours are similar to mine the way the cables run makes this job not alot of fun. Nearly had me taking up smoking again. If i do this again ill definatly remove the whole headlining first. On a good note, each monitor had an imput and an output so i had no probs running the two screens off a single xbox.

rob, you out on thursday??

also kids, you can from what i can see have the screen turned on to display track listings, but no visual stuff..... like crazy patterns.... )you prolly could..... but your already pushing it.... the info screens that were above were good examples....

and yes you can do this with a PS2 full sized unit.... you need a network adapter, hard drive loader, and a compatible hard drive (regular atapi)

Those of you with xbox's in the car.
How did you power them? Just with an inverter? If so what size?

I recently picked up a cheap 7" LCD and wouldn't mind putting it in the car with the xbox.

Ive got a inverter for mine. 300watt I think but the xbox shouldnt need that much power.
I think I've read somewhere they consume a max of abt 110 watts

Depending on your xbox version you can get a power supply designed for car PCs . Xboxes made since beginning of 2004 use an ATX power connector which is the same as most computers. The older ones use and AT connector which is and old standard.

If I didnt already have my inverter I think I would try something like this :
http://www.mp3car.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=67

But I still havnt worked out for certain if its powerful enough.

I was looking around today for options for the xbox not long before I made the original post and stumbled across these (http://secure.llamma.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=499&osCsid=5f4d25f8ee067c58ebdfa32e353defb3).

They have been specially made for the xbox but at $150 it is FAR more than an inverter from Jaycar (even a 300w one).

That one you posted is only 90w so if you say the xbox uses upto 110w then it will struggle.

Yeh Ive seen them - no good for me because they only support xbox versions 1.0 - 1.5 and mine is 1.6

Any idea how to measure the wattage of an xbox ?

CHiMPY
19-09-2005, 09:36 AM
That link I posted was for the 1.6 version.

Not sure how to measure wattage, I would think the guys on xbox-scene would have already figured it out, but I couldn't find anything.

ah so it is. I should have read the page and not presumed it was the same as the old one I knew of.

Power
Power consumption operational 100 Watt

Battery None

Power device frequency required 60 Hz

Voltage Required ± 10% 60 Hz

It would appear that PSU from mp3car.com will not suffice.

edit;

where is your xbox mounted in your car?
