My Astina Hardtop has been giving me clunking/ noises when metal knocking noises when I brake. This sound is coming from my right wheel.
Had my car brought in to Penfold Mazda to rectify that problem. Apparently, the brakes calipers pins are sliding around due to wear and tear. He said some grease will ease off the sound. He also said that this is a common problem among the Astinas. They had it greased but the sound still occurs.
Is this true? Have anyone of you encountered this problem before?[/color:post_uid0]

Yeah unfortunately i have the same clunks coming from mine,it seems to be getting worse :(
I had a mechanic put some brake joining compound on mine,it lasted about 3 days then was doing the same thing
If its definately the caliper pins i think ill have to look into replacing them,More money :(
Ive heard a few BA Astina owners say they have the same problem, just gotta put up with it man, till you can afford to replace the pins,i know it doesnt sound right, but rest asurred it no real drama, ive been driving my car with those clunks from the brakes for 2 years now :p
Catch ya :)[/color:post_uid11]

Yeah its one of those defects that cause its not life
threatening doesn't get a recall so now we have to pay
for it. Make sure you get the pins that were designed
to fix the clunk not the original part number.

I thought the Ka-tunk from the air filter was worse than the
brakes noise. *I only get it when reversing ?? *Mazda is the
place you just need to be clear that you have the clunk and
need the pins that fix it. *I think from last time this was
raised they were about $80 a corner so its your decision.
Get the price from Mazda and let us know again. *Part number
would be good to so we can write it down in the mods section.

Thanks. It sure is very annoying. And it gets louder when there are more passengers in the car. Sounds like a train when it just started to move - Cllllunnnkkkkk!!! :(
Very embarassing.
Penfold Mazda said that there are not original parts but they do have modified pins to fit. I will call them tomorrow to check on the price.
Are there any other defects on this beautiful car? The defect reminds me of a hot girl who fartsss :)[/color:post_uid0]

Hi Fellas,
Sorry for the much delayed reply. I called Penfold Mazda in Burwood, Vic for the cost of replacing the slides. It is A$150 for all 4 brakes and it include labour costs.
Interested??[/color:post_uid0]

The clunking noise is your Caliper Slides seizing... the noise has pretty much disappeared from my astina... UNTIL today... and I hate driving through roadworks... *my poor front spoiler and side skirts with more stonechips*[/color:post_uid0]
Actually the caliper slides are slipping NOT siezing. Like Mal said, this is common problem among the 94-98 astina's (and same model laser). This was an optional warranty job, but as not many people discovered the problem until it was out of warranty people like us are stuck with it. Not life theatening, just anoying. Usually happems when breaking while turning (like turing into a driveway).
To have this problem fixed for $150, well I was told more like $200 per quater. I think I like the sound of the prior.[/color:post_uid0]

It's a bit hard trying to "impress someone" ( :;):  ) if every time you brake and turn, you get this *knock**knock**THUMP* :([/color:post_uid0]
and looking at the damage to dan's car the sounds were from the engine...not the brakes...[/color:post_uid0]

Ok peeps, I went and seen the MAZDA Spare parts place today about the cost of these so called problem pins :O
Here is a breakdown pic of the front calipers

Ok now the part circled in red,is apparently the Pin that causes all the clunking, they have made a pin to replace this problem 1,and the part number is [b:post_uid0]33661-b45533661[/b:post_uid0] and costs [b:post_uid0]$37.25 each[/b:post_uid0]
Now the pin circled in yellow apparently was ok and shouldnt need replacing,if youd prefer to replace this 1 anyhow the part number is[B]33662-bO92 33662 @ $34.85 each OR BC5F33662 @ $26.75 each[B],depending on what series BA Astina you have, you will have to give them you VIN number to determine it ???
Now the pins circled in the blue are the pins i always though were the problem but the mazda guy tells me diff ???
anyone else know any different :p

Bought my hardtop 2 weeks ago and the brakes were making these funny noises, but this was because the previous owner only did 1000km in 3.5 months, thus the discs needed to worn back in![/color:post_uid0]

I have the same thought as you did. Although, there's a diagram, I have no idea how to replace the pin. Will still need to get back to a Mazda dealer for that.[/color:post_uid0]

Okay - I have a little more info on this for you - the stuff that Toyboy was quoted was to replace with original parts (ie this will have the same problem again at a later stage).
Replacement part will do ALL JUN '94+. New part has grooves cut in around the pin to help carry luricant.
Pin Kit is BRY5.33.26Z and retail at $77.50 (per quarter bu you only need to do the front). My local Mazda sapre parts guy is willing to do trade price fo me and my best mate is a mechanic and can do the changes for you guys (at a small cost), so if you want to organise a day let me know.

Are you guys sure its the front cause for me its the rear that clunks.
Wonder if there is a kit for that.
Thanks for the info anyway.
Mal
Mal - It's the same kit that does all four, but most people only seem to have the problem on the front.
Basically - the pin in question eventually gets a runt worn in it along it's length. This rut is waht causes the clunk sound when the caliper is operated while under stress (usuall turning when the caliper flexes).
The new part (as stated b4) has groves cut along the length which channel the greese to keep it lubricated so the rut doesn't wear in again...
Hope this Helps.
With the NSW guys - come on down for a BBQ. Get all the Vic's and Welshies together for a w/e. I'm sure we can billet out some accomodation for y'all. :)

Sounds like a plan there Trav. Just make sure if Rupe comes along, I don't "accidentally" drive his car home
Unfortunatley, I won't have the funds for such a trip for some time. Damn uni :x
to drive dan's car home your name must be fred flinstone....
this problem is no critical and con be done anytime. just let me know when you want to do it and we'll organise it. It'll be easier to get a heap done at a time though...

You mentioned that you get a noise from your airfilter. Mine does the same, its sort of a "doom" like its sucking air, when i turn the wheels. I can fix this by taking the wire off the power steering but this is not a solution. Any ideas????
to me this sounds like the normal sound of the power steering pump.

Finally got rid of the clunking sound from the brake calipers the second time round. The mechanic told me that my hub is distorted. This causes the brakes to work unevenly. Cost me $380 to change the hub and the bearing. They felt bad and only charged me $50 for a 2 hr job.
In total, I have forked out $700 for this problem. The servive manager did not record the damaged hub in the first report and that's why it was not fixed properly. :(
It feels great to drive without that awful sound. :D
