View Full Version : 2.0l lantis v6 vs 2.5l probe/mx6 engine - Are they just a different stroke?

As the topic suggests... some people have eluded that the 2L v6 lantis may be the 2.5l mx6/probe engine with a different stroke... can anyone confirm or deny this? I have the 2L astina... and i reckon it would be crazy to stroke it out to 2.5L (if that even is the right choice of words :) )
Anyone got any info for me?[/color:post_uid0]
I suppose that's the right terminology but don't really know myself. Both the bore and stroke are bigger but somehow the overall dimentions are less in every direction (seems very weird to me) ???
Stats for each of the V6 engines and descriptions are on this website. There is a comparison table just down from the top.

Thats a really informative site. very interesting! :)
but i would think it would be cheaper to transplant a 2.5 straight into your car - assuming it fits (apparently it does)[/color:post_uid0]

the 2.5 has been present in quite a few topics. i think that will consider placing a 2.5 litre in an astina when i get out of school/get a job.[/color:post_uid0]
Yeah, kind of keen to do that myself. Not too sure which one to get though.
Do I upgrade to the KLDE MX-6 engine 120-odd kW
or the KLZE Jap spec engine 140-odd kW.
Would probably have a tougher time getting the ZE past the inspectors and would probably have to upgrade a whole heap of stuff like brakes etc. as well. Don't really know, haven't researched it that much. Also, a KLDE might be easier to come by.[/color:post_uid0]

wasn't it 126kw? 140 would be nice to pla around with:)[/color:post_uid0]

Hmm the swap certainly does sound like the better option. the 2.5L engine is smaller - is it any heavier? that site doesnt say. if its no heavier then i wont need suspension/brakes etc.
Would i need a new clutch or gearbox? its not _that_ much more powerful... still would be nice :)
Anyone know how much one of these engines would cost? how much i could sell my engine for? its got 60,000 on it (yes its a 1994 model :) )[/color:post_uid0]

60,000kms isn't bad at all!! Mines a 96 model with just over 80,000kms.
I had also thought about doing a 2.5LV6 conversion, but i would imagine that it would be pretty hard to find an engine that has only 60-80thou KM's on it... You'd have to search damn hard me thinks.

you would need to search hard. i haven't seen anything under 100,000 ks on an mx6. have to start looking for a 626.[/color:post_uid0]

You havent looked that hard if you havent found an MX6 under 100000km Sandyman.
Trouble is, as Adam said, it would be difficult to find just the motor. Dont know of either the ZE or DE being a common transplant. Talk to an importer of parts and they'll get you anything you want. U may just have to wait and it could cost you a bit. Toyshop up Newcastle way do a lot of frontcuts, otherwise theres Mazbits near Auburn, or a few of the Jap places in southern sydney. I only know Syd - dont know where you are. Mazbits looks pretty dodgy, but they were helpful and had some interesting stuff that is uncommon such as a Eunos 100 (Jap luxury version of 89-94 model Astina) spoiler and front bar, mx5 cuts and lots of random bits. Could be handy.
On the gearbox note, cant help, but considering a few of the turbo boys have changed clutches etc and they have around 130kw before mods, then im assuming you would need to as well.

Imagine that engine mated to the 4WD stuff from the US 4-paw Astina thingy. WRX eater!!!!! :D
Bring it on....
Adam[/color:post_uid0]
Yeah, My 96 has nearly 130,000 on it as well.
Found a website of one of the guys off the mx6 forum where he put a ZE in a VW Baja buggy. Looks pretty full on if you ask me but I think buying a front cut is the way to go. You get all the wiring and get to see everything hooked up so you can compare everything before pulling it all apart.
anyway, here's the website....

What's the wiring question? I can browse the wiring diagram and hopefully send you the info.
Wiring diagrams are for '96 model.
