Hi everyone,
I'm new here and dont know much bout turbos and mods!!!
I would like to say that astinas rock and so does this astina forum LOL... :D

I am making the decision to purchase a GTX half cut and doing the BPT conversion into my 97 BA, and was wondering where would be a good place to get my conversion done?? any recommendations would be great!!
Also how long does this generally take??? I plan on running a stocker engine, turbo and ecu, as I dont intend to mod it anytime soon. I live in the Liverpool area and am not sure on where I should get my engine fitted. I see that alot of the member here have done the conversions but couldn't find any threads on where it was done.....any help will be appreciated

Cheers

Tommy

Welcome Tommy. Yeah these forums a great. A year ago I stumbled here to look at pictures of sideskirts, and now I'm about to do a conversion too!

There are a few websites you can look at for places that supply half cuts :
www.asianautospares.com.au
www.adelaidejap.com.au
www.japparts.com.au
www.jaustech.com.au
www.justjap.com.au
www.ichiban.com.au

At the moment a BPT half cut looks to be $2500. As you have found there are a few threads in these forums about what's involved in doing the conversion, and also check out the forums on fordlaser.com. Sometimes halfcuts appear on ebay, and usually someone will put a link in the For Sale section either here or on FL.

Good luck!

oh, and I don't know any workshops around liverpool, but maybe you could look in Hot4s or Fast Fours? Be sure to shop around, get quotes, and ask questions about things you're unsure of.

thanks deruss for the handy advice. I rang up justjaps on the weekend and they are getting a half cut on their shipment, so I hope it all goes to plan, just kinda tossing and turning on where I should get it all installed at. I dont wanna see mechanics scratching their heads if they are stuck on something lol...

It might be worth asking any workshops if they're worked on KF/KH Laser TX3 Turbos, as they run roughly the same setup as the GTX

Give Formaz at Smithfield a call. These guys are the best in my oppinion when it comes to the GTX conversion. They did the conversion on my laser.

I farmed the work out to a couple of guys it worked out cheaper. My local mechanic
swapped the motor for $550, got the exhaust shop to do pipes and exhaust and then
had the computer wired in. Finding the auto electrician to wire in a factory computer
at a reasonable price was the tricky bit. Sorry I wouldn't recomend the first mob I used
but I used a mob in the Gong a couple of months ago when I swapped over
Jynx's motor to my car he only did little things but was quite cheap.

I rang Formaz this morning and Bruce said that he didnt want to do the conversion due to the fact that he thinks bits and pieces will be missing in the half cut and would work out to be more expensive. He wanted to sell a BPT he had in showroom condition for $5500 with installation. I'm going to talk to my local mechanic and see if he can do the job. Any more workshop reccomendations would be appreciated...cheeerrsss

I would have a chat with your mechanic first since he'll be the one servicing it, but I wouldn't get them to do the conversion since they are not specialists and it will probably take them longer and you're still paying by the hour. The engine swap would be straight forward, but yeah wiring might take time and they would probably outsource the piping to an exhaust shop anyway. (not that I've been down this path at all, this is just my opinion).

Yeah, missing bits is my biggest worry with the engine I have ready to put in.

Yeah I plan to talk to my mechanic on the weekend and see if he can do the job, Bigmal I reckon it would be a good idea for me to spread the job out, but if my mech can do it all that would be awesome, I'll keep you all tuned lol....

Just came back from my mechanic, he quoted me $2500 for the labour including all the electrical side of it too, I reckon that abit over my budget..I then went to this other place at Moorebank and got quoted $1000 for only the engine replacement labour, but have to get the electrics outsourced to this other guy for roughy around $600. I got a $4K budget at it looks like I'll be hitting that pretty easy...I'll just keep looking around..

Keep the details about the electrics for $600 it cost me $500. Go talk to them
about what they need. My guy made up the wiring using the plugs off the GTX
motor as they cut it near the firewall and then the ECU I got had plugs on it so
just extended the wires. That way didn't need a GTX wiring harness and therefor
a halfcut only just motor, afm, ecu and ignition coil. Personally I wouldn't go
factory again in the end a microtech is only a small bit dearer but you end up
with something that will grow with the car. With the mechanics just ask them for
a price to remove and replace the motor. You dont even need to get into that its
a turbo. The motor bolts up exactly the same as a N/A, you are going to get the
I/C piping done elsewhere and same for the wiring so its only R/R the motor which
should be $500-600. $4k is a very low budget thou you would be better up
waiting till you got another grand at least you dont want to skimp out on things
like HD clutch etc otherwise will cost you a lot more later on.
