Hey guys and girls, jsut wondering what type/brand of petrol you guys use for your Astina.

I've been using Shell Optimax pretty much since I got my 97 astina, but for the past month I've been trying out Mobil Synery 8000.

So what do you guys use and what are your experiences with each type? I guess the turbo guys will feel more different with the higher octance petrols.

In order of preference

Mobil Synergy 8000
BP ultimate 98
Optimax
then Caltex Vortex

nothing much else goes in mine[/color:post_uid0]

Optimax is a fantastic fuel, but it has the highest suphur content of any fuel in australia. Sulphur causes engine corrosion.

I am lucky enough to have a mobil fuel card (which makes it a little cheaper), so am using the Premium Mobil Fuel. Shell next then BP, as BP tends to always be a few cpl higher than any other petrol station.[/color:post_uid0]

I use BP Premium Unleaded coz my local BP charges 4c/litre extra for premium and the others charge 9c extra.....price talks in this case.

On occasion I use Mobil 8000 when I have to fill elsewhere and I have a sneaky suspicion that it is ever so slightly smoother with that.

The car was dyno tuned with the BP in it, so that has a bit to do with it too, as marginal as that is....[/color:post_uid0]

Have on occasion put octain booster with Bp ultimate.

I run a 70/30 mixture of ULP/Avgas...yeah, I wish :p

I run regular Caltex ULP. Can't afford to go high quality  :([/color:post_uid0]

From an e-mail conversation I had with JJ after the boycott BP theory....

[quote:post_uid0]Yeah... BP Ultimate and the mobil premium are the only two 98 octane petrols available... Caltex Vortex and Ampol Gold are both high-density fuels, but only 96 octane (I find these best for my car for fuel efficiency...). *Cr@ptimax is about 96-98 (apparently it's a lot less consistent than the others...) octane as well, but i just find my car and bike both run worse on that than the BP...

just my $0.02 worth! :-)

[/quote:post_uid0]

Actually, I'm enclined to agree with him. Have been using Optimax for ages but tried BP premium the other day and got really good fuel economy and the car ran better so might shop around a little.

Cr@ptimax is a bit harsh though. :)[/color:post_uid0]

i usually use Mobile 8000.
I was talking to a Porsche Mechanic mate who also races them. He tells me that Optimax is apparently a piece of sh*t.

It cleans the engine too well, and ends up wrecking it. He has a car that he'd been running on optimax since it was brand new. When the car started running a bit funny, he opened up the engine and found that the optimax had severely shortened the life-span of the engine parts, in particular the spark plugs were in terrible condition.

And the majors in the industry all seem to agree. Within the racing scene, he goes to all kinds of functions with ppl in the know, and its common knowledge. Apparently.[/color:post_uid0]

Back to my comment about Optimax. Well, shell fuels in general. They have the highest sulphur content which is what is causing the engine corrosion...

This is very sub-optimal esp. if you are doing a lot of 'K'age like the porsche guy...[/color:post_uid0]

Wholly crap, i had no idea that Optimax had this problem!! I might start looking at the different fuels myself now then. I've never really had a problem with optimax though, but i may just try something else.

Bugger :(

[quote:post_uid0]Cr@ptimax is about 96-98 octane[/quote:post_uid0]

The Shell Optimax (http://www.shell.com.au/optimax) website reckons that it's 98RON minimum. They could just be saying that though. Also, have a listen to the customer testimonials!

I wonder if we should send an email to them asking them about this sulphur thing....?

Hey [b:post_uid0]Trav[/b:post_uid0], where did you get that info from?

hi guys,

I found that my sp20 runs best on BP Ultimate with the engine running smoothly and revving very easily. So far I haven't been very impressed with either Optimax or Synergy 8000. As to Vortex, I'll never put that crap into the car. I don't know what it is about that fuel, but the car just drinks it like there is no tomorrow.[/color:post_uid0]

@Adam

A friend of mine has been working in the Automotive Industry (vehichle design) for most of his life. He is in a position to get hold of all sorts of data on fuel and other littel tid bits. Can't sharer actual figures, but can drop littel bits of information here and there...

I used to run optimax and found it to be an excellent fuel. The sulphur content is generally fine for those doing the average Km's a year, but if you race, do extrodinary Km's then you may want to look at another fuel.

Octane Rating from Shell is usually pretty good and I've heard a lot of good things about it, but I'd like to keep my engine for a littel longer than 'average'.[/color:post_uid0]

The GTX computer reacts to different octane ratings by
shifting the boost cut and retarding the timing. The GTX
was designed for 100ron fuel and when Optimax first came
out and also when I ran Optimax with octane booster to
100ron my boost cut would be at .89bar on my digital boost
guage. In the last six months I have tried all the fuels and
none have given me more than .85bar so none of them at
the moment seem to be 98ron.
I have also heard of quality issues with Optimax and this
seems to be the case as evident by my boost cut. Just to
clarify my boost guage records boost peak(which is where
it cuts) so I can tell.

That reminds me - i've always wondered if the standard BP ECU was an octane-adapting one. Is it?[/color:post_uid0]

BigMal
09-04-2003, 12:53 AM
Think you will find is more from a negative adaption.
The ECU responds to the O2 and Knock sensor
to reduce/retard things so I don't think it actually will
improve by running higher octane in a standard ULP
car but that it wont be held back as much with less
knock and a better burn. On the GTX its a 100ron ECU
so running on lower octane fuel its already retarded
so by running higher octane fuels you do get a gain
cause its almost running where it is supposed to.
