Hi all,

I'm new here and just happened to bump into this site. Cool :)

I just bought a 1994 323 1.8 Astina hardtop and it came without a service mannual. Can somebody tell me where I can obtain a copy of if not the contents of it.

Also, when does a 1.8 needs to change its timing belt. The mileage is currently at 85k. Any recommendations for Astina service specialist too?[/color:post_uid0]

hey, welcome! good to see another hardtop in Melbourne :)

When you say service manual, what do you mean? as the only things you would have got with the car (even from new) would have been a handbook (explaining how to use the car) and maybe a service interval checkbook. If you want either of these i'd suggest contacting your local Mazda dealer or their spare parts division.

If you're after a manual on how to do things yourself, what you're after would be a Haynes manual which covers the 89-94 Astina (and laser) and the 94-96 Astina hatch and hardtop. I've got one, but it's not [i:post_uid0]that[/i:post_uid0] good.

oh, and the timing belt on a 1.8 astina should be changed around 100,000kms

Cheers

Hi and Thanks for the welcoming note.

I think I bought an imported model, a Japanese direct/personal import. So I guess there was no mannual in it. I noticed with the ringing bell when I put it on reverse and the speedo limit is only 190km/h unlike to local 240km/h. Also, mine is a 1994 1.8lts model. I believe Mazda only brought in the 1.8lt hardtop in 1995.

Anyway, it is a very powerful car for an Auto.

Are there any key items to look for in this model in terms of defects of wear and tear? Any recommendations for a Mazda specialist (not too priceeeeey) to bring my car for service instead of the main dealers?[/color:post_uid0]

Not that I know of. I will check but have not find any buttons to retract the wing mirrors. Although this car is full of electrics. What is missing is a sunroof :( .

I find the 1.8 quite torquey as I'm having trouble to stick to the 60km/h limit. This car seems to have a throttle brain of its own.[/color:post_uid0]

if your car has retracting wing mirrors, there will be a little round button at the top of the drivers side electric window controls.

as far as i know, the Hatch and Hardtop were introduced in Australia at the same time, but i could be wrong. it's happened before :p

i'm surprised the speedo only goes to 190 kph - as the car will go faster than this. But being a Japspec i'd imagine that it's electronically limited to 180 kph

Can't say i've got any real recommendations for service centres. i used to take mine to Penfold Mazda before my turbo conversion, but now take it elsewhere.[/color:post_uid0]

on the Jap-spec Astinas (well at least the V6 like Cityends mums car), you get retracting door mirrors. They fold in themselves at the press of a buttom, rather than having to be folded in by hand on the Aus-spec cars.[/color:post_uid0]

Kewl, didn't even know you could fold them by hand. Sweet, might remeber that for Uni...[/color:post_uid0]

so close together you just have to smack the mirriors in on

I thought they were just spring loaded, not "foldable", so they sprang back and didn't break. Didn't know you could actually fold them back and they'd stay there...keewwlll.[/color:post_uid0]

I do not have the electric button to automatically fold the wing mirror. Have to do it manually.

Hey just to check on the engine note. Does the std 1.8 engine sounds very sporty. I find them a bit raw and ready to go. It does not sound as refined as a normal Toyota or Nissan 1.8 engine.[/color:post_uid0]

yeah those reteactable wing mirrors were a cool gagit when we first got it, but it really hasn't been much use, just a novelty item.

but if i could, i'd swap them on to my HT =P

it's strange how it works when the key is in the ignition(without it being turned) but once u pull the key out it stops. so u can fold the mirrors in, pull the key out then press the button for the mirror to fold out... so the next time u hop into the car, the mirror seems to fold out automaticlly =)[/color:post_uid0]

Hi All

First time posting in this site, this is a cool forum and I have seen cars from this site that look pretty wicked.
I'm from NZ and I drive a jap import as well, its a 1996 2.0ltr V6 type r and it has electric retractable mirrors and front and back strut braces. I myself are looking for a manual for the car and I have been to a Mazda service centre and they said that its not much use buying a Haynes manual for the Astina. There are some US manuals that cover the 323/Mx-3 etc for models 1993-1997 that have a similar setup but I guess have the same principles, depending on what you want to do, the only one I looked at was from the library a manual published by Chilton as it costs $70 to but it here which is a lot to pay if the manual is irrelevant for what you want to learn about the car

[/color:post_uid0]

hey toyboy tell me about it, it took the mazda dealer 3 times to get the right hose connecting the airfilter box to the intake and they had to source it from japan, $110 for about a half a foot of rubber hose, lucky thats the only thing I had to buy so far to repair, does you car have the chrome trims on the bottom of the door frames?
what mods have you done to your car, there was a turbo V6 lantis for sale in NZ but I missed out seeing it as it got sold

Sorry mine is the Aus Spec 323 Astina(Lantis) 1.8L 4 Cyl version,it misses out on a few of the extra's that your model would have,Still a nice car anyway :)
So your from New Zealand? You Got any pics of your ride ???
Here are some specs on my ride, there has been many changes since then but, gives you an idea though :p http://www.astinagt.com/feattheo.html

I do not have those strut braces at the front or rear. Also, my pilot lights are my signal lights by the side. I do not have signal lights on the front bumper.

This means that my front pilot lights are amber in colour. Very strange to me.

Hey, there's a mazda wrecker in Clyaton, Vic. It's on Clayton Road and its called "Allmaz". Have you guyrs check it out for spare parts yet?

I believe my Imported hardtop should be similar to the Aussie specs except for some additional gadgets.[/color:post_uid0]

Crap I am looking for a service manual as well. I can't spot things as the engine bay is pretty packed and it is a bit different to a 1.6L Honda engine.

So if anybody finds anything give us a bell![/color:post_uid0]

Hi again,
I have a copy of volume II of the service manual (doesn't cover engine or trans) all the body, brakes and suspension covered and the basics of the electrics.
Got it from Stan Earl books in Isabella St Moorabbin. Cost about $90 per volume *:O Saving up for the '96 wiring book (another $90 :O )
Given a couple days I can supply info from what I have. It does get a bit long winded but helps find things like the relay for the spotties :p (it's behind the kick pannel on the passengers side).
Could've used those folding wing mirrors today, I wacked the drivers on a slalom and couldn't see to reverse back to the start, WD'd and F@#&ED up my whole day  *
