Is anyone using or seen 18 inch wheels on a SP20(2002). I'm just about to buy some new wheels and really had my heart set on 18's. Can anyone tell me what they think about 18's on a SP20?. Does it work.

TDK, which state are you in?
18's will fill the guards nicely on the sp20... not sure if it is worth going 17's on it, when standard is 16's.
I think Chris (Critter) has 18's on his sp20.. when i decide to get some wheels, i'll definately go 18's on my car.

cheers,
Bill[/color:post_uid0]

Yeah, mine are 17s.

Problem with 18s is getting enough offset to make them fit the rear guards. 18s will be mostly 7.5" wide and you will need minimum 48mm offset to make them fit.

Mine are 17x7 with 42mm offset and have rear gurds lipped to the max to get a fit, and they still work the guards with 2 people in the back on big bumps with car lowered just 1.5" from stock and fairly stiff springs.

As for the look, depends what you want, huh?
For me, I wanted it to look right and balanced rather than "full sik, moit" and I think it does.

More dumped and 18s would be "sikker/phatter" but very difficult to get it fitting and working right in my experience.
And I can tell you a LOT of research went into getting it like it is......

Probably time we crossed paths, TDK :)
Good to meet someone who appreciates the finer things....[/color:post_uid0]

Thanks Critter, I've been wanting to meet up as well, hopefully at the next meet. By the way i believe that we have a mutual friend, Oscar (Oscar of Markoz). At the moment he's builing some door pods for me. Once they are in we should meet up so you can get some ideas for your pods.

Anyway, keep in touch.

18s have been done in the States, but they have access to all sorts of offsets etc that we don't get here.....

Yeah, TDK, Oscar's a good bloke, does good stuff.
He is getting an afinity with SP20s now :)[/color:post_uid0]

Hey Critter, Mr_Bob,

Yeh oscar is a great guy. It actually takes us twice the time to do anything when i go around, thats because we end up talking for a while. He's making the door pods for the utopias, he's allready taken the measurements and now it's a matter of making them.

I have spoken to a few places about the wheels. They all seem to say that if i want 18's then i'm best of going for a 3 piece wheel. That means you can specify what size rim and also the offset. The wheel i'm looking at is the ROH Modena in a Shadow Chrome.
[img:post_uid0]http://www.groupawheels.com/modena1.jpg[/img:post_uid0]

What do you guys think? I don't know about a chrome wheel because being a yellow car allready it might be a bit shiny.

Anyway, keep in touch guys and i hope to meet up soon,
Bora[/color:post_uid0]

personally i wouldn't go the chrome. a silver rim with a gunmetal or black centre would be sweet tho :)

just my 0.02 cents, which, with todays monetary system is rounded down to 0.00... ;)[/color:post_uid0]

3-piece wheels are going to be expensive.
sp20 has 5 stud pattern, and it opens up alot more selections for wheels. in terms of width and diameter.
sometimes, you can get blank wheels and drill them to your pcd pattern.
what's the stock size for sp20? 16" x ????" and tyres?[/color:post_uid0]

Stockies are 16x6 with 38mm offset and 195/50-16 tyres.

Even with rear guards lipped I get touching with a load in the car with 17x7 42mm offset and 205/40-17s on a 35mm drop. No dramas at the front tho'.
Will have to find $$ for stiffer shocks methinks.

So these things you have to be real careful with going bigger wheels and dropping them. REAL careful.

And I agree with Dan, black or gunmetal centres /chrome or polished rim would be awesome with the yellow car.[/color:post_uid0]

and without the roof-rack.
i'd prefer gunmetal.
the 20" im getting will have polished dish and some sort of gunmetal-ish colour for the spokes.[/color:post_uid0]

The 3 piece ROH Modena in shadow chrome (not a shiny chrome) with falken 215/35/18 was quoted to me for about $3500. Thats a very good price seeing that i was also quoted $4200. But the Place that quoted me $3500 does all my mechanical work so they give me good prices on most things. The advantage of the 3 piece is that i can have a larger offset at the rear. But i'll see what happens.

does altering your offset from 38 effect any other elements of the car i.e alighment tyre wear wheel bearings?!

Critter
17-10-2003, 04:25 PM
The thing to keep in mind as the offset increases is then clearance to things inside
ie suspension components etc, shouldn't really affect camber etc to any significant degree.

my mate put 18x7.5s on his sp20 and he had to get negative camber on both front and rear wheels - needs more on rear wheels though. can the sp20 safely ride on 18x7.5s or 8s without any trouble? i'm guessing from rod's and coolsp's posts it's ok.

coolsp (seen you on US protege club forum too i think), any problems riding on 18x8s on your sp20? btw, your sp20 looks hot on avatar; got any bigger pix?

i love those rims - if you're thinking about going 19s, you selling your 18s? ;)
apart from rolling out guards, did you need to get negative camber for your tyres to not scrub?

awesome ride bro. luv it.
