I was hopign to get some feedback from other SP20 owners on the tyre wear. I managed 30,000kms on the Yokohama Advans am now 8,000kms into my Federal S901's. So far the grip around corners isnt as good as the Yokohamas but then again the little wheel slip that happens goes well when the grip takes hold as it really pulls the car into line. The Federals are quieter and so far look like they'll last around the 30,000kms as well.
The only difference with both tyres (both look good) is the price. I got quoted $220 a tyre for the Yokos and $120 a tyre for the Feds.
Anyone care to contribute.....? ???[/color:post_uid1]

I have been using the Falken tyres now for 5 years now
as everything else in 17" or 18" are too pricey. Not saying
$250 a tyre for the 18"s aren't too pricey either.
I found the Ziex lasted longer with only a marginal loss in
handling and I am the late braking, hard cornering type.
Just ask anybody who has been in my car... Sorry Leanne
for last weekend, *that 140+ stuff and the no brake cornering
wont happen again :D
Hope this helps

adelaidesp20,
i have just gone over 19,000, and at the moment, there still is a fair bit of tread left... when the front tires get low, i'll swap them over with the rears... but yeah, when all four tyres are ready to be replaced, i'll just opt for aftermarket wheels and tyres.
if i get under 30k from my tyres, i will not be happy!!!
yoki's rock..i had them on my old car, excellent handling and brake performance...but they don't make the A509's like they previously did.
a couple of issues ago in Motor magazine, they had an absolutely awesome tyre performance test....they have it every year... but from memory, the feds got the lowest ratings on all fronts... kumho's went well though... i'll get back to you with more info

i only got 20,000 out of mine an they were totally bald so i think there no good at all i now run 18's with falken tyres but have only done 7,000 on them but there still 98%[/color:post_uid7]
Mal,
What rubber where u running on these 17s prior to the 18s? Looking to replace the 2 rears and rotate the fronts to the rear so starting to do a bit of homework, window shopping etc.
Cheers[/color:post_uid0]

The baldy ones were the front tyres. The other ones were
test tyres to try and reduce wheel spin which they did but
aren't as good for handling so do make a better rear tyre.
The fronts are GRb's but would recomend the Ziex 502's for
better wear.

Welcome aboard oddy...
I didn't notice you had joined... yeah, 20kms.. i'm touching 20kms and i have plenty left of the front (over 80%) and the rears don't get much wear on the fwd's...
I tried to go to your url, but the addy is not working...
Which area are you from?
Did the guards need much attention after putting the 18's on?

Yeah i used the Goodyear F1"s on my 17inch wheels and they were great. 2 years i had them on for, and they all still had 85% tread left on them when i sold them :D
I highly recomend them :)[/color:post_uid14]

i've only heard average reports on the F1s. a mate had them on his WRX and they used to squeal and weren't that grippy at all. but they lasted well, i guess because they're a hard compound[/color:post_uid0]

A mate of mine was telling me about a survey done on tyres that was done not long ago,and they came out on top  oh well each to there own,i found that the wearing factor was great, grip in the dry was excellent, didnt think to much of them in the wet though :( As for the squealling i never had any :)
Maybe the squeals were coming from his passengers in fright of his driving style :p[/color:post_uid0]
The F1s are only an extra $9 per tyre. The guy at the tyre centre didnt seem too impressed with falkens, said they were cheap tyres, reckoned the F1s were better. He could have had excess stock as I know the F1s are not produced any more, replace with a new model tyre.[/color:post_uid0]

I got 32,000km from the original tyres. They were still ok even when I replaced them and could do another 2000-3000 easily. Now I went for Yokohama A539 205/45 R16 and they are just unreal. Much better than the stock tyres.
I also roadtested Vredestein Sportrac, originally Bob Jane (Epping, Victoria) advised me that they would be the best for my car and said that if I am not happy, I can return them. I had them on for about a week and they were just too slippery on the SP20 during cornering and braking. Even with ABS, the tyres screeched on tarmac when braking. The Yokohamas are much better. I wouldnt get anything else.
Oh yeah, they look pretty cool too.
If you get a chance, fill them up with Nitro, Bob Jane offer it at $5.50 per wheel.[/color:post_uid0]

my old man had those yokohamas A539's on his EL Falcon (we no longer have it) in 215/60R 15's
he got 35,000kms out of them and they were the best tyre i have driven with, plenty of grip in the wet and the dry.
i read a review in a magazine on them and they said why they r so good is to do with the criss-cross grid in the middle which also looks pretty cool as well
werent that expensive 4 a sports tyre and lasted well
i would defiently reccomend them as well
cheers

i'm just on 22,000kms, and have PLENTY left!
yep... i had A539's on my rolla sx, great tyres... only got 18kms out of them, but yeah, awesome gripping tyres in dry and wet conditions.[/color:post_uid0]

Bill - No mods on my car yet. I'm saving up the money and will get a turbo conversion in the future. Probably towards the end of the year. I just need to save about $10K. I want to do the brakes too while I get the turbo installed. I figure, if I can go faster, I need to stop faster too.
From what people are saying, its pretty difficult to modify an Astina and get away with it. Most people have had some problems with the engines not being strong enough. I wonder what work the dealers (or whoever did it for them) needed to do to turbo the MX-5. They have reliability all sorted out while the performance is just amazing.
Yeah, one day I'll come along to the cruises in Melbourne.[/color:post_uid3]

I have got almost 50000km on the original yokohamas 8) but I rotate and balance and rotate the tyres every 5000km,they have about 2mm of tread left on them

I rotated my original Yokies religiously but 30k was what they were good for.
I AM lucky in having great local roads to give a tyre a hard time regularly tho :)
Current Falken Ziex's I'm happy with, if not ecstatic.

my stock yokos (2 front) didnt last long.
I didnt keep constant check on pressure, when i changed wheels, i found out they were kept at 36psi. Im gonna whinge to Mazda Service, On their invoice, they specify check air pressure and rotation of tyres...seems like they didnt do either.

my originals are still lasting (over 2.5 years and over 50000k's). i just rotate them with the spare every 5000k's. still could get another 10000k's outta them
then it's time for..... FALKEN AZENIS RT215 215/45/16'sd :D :D :D :D :D :D
Ive do 55k now on the advan's and they r on the indicators! been looking at tyres! What u guys rekon 205/50r16 or 205/45r16 cause im thinking the 50's but not sure! Wouldn't mind a silica tyre! Brands?

falken azenis 215/45/16 - semi slick tyre and keep the same rolling diameter as the stock tires so your speedo wont be out :D
pr1mo
09-02-2004, 10:29 AM
215/45/16's are a rare assed size. youd need wide rims. i was hunting around for a set of tyres this big when i was looking at those MOMO GT2 16" wheels which were 7.5 wide!
twilightprotege
09-02-2004, 10:37 AM
yeah the only tyre avail is the falkens. they do fit the standard SP20 rims, but falken recommend minimum 7" wide rims (sp20 are 6").
that's what i hate about the sp20. stupid oem tyre size.
Yes dam 6" wheels! I like my wheels and dont plan on changing they suit it lowered! Mine r the first sp wheels which i personally like but it's a bj2! it was a rare in between model, because when i bought it, i wanted the darker blue but was told a new line was coming and couldn't get one so mine was the first starry blue one to come into victoria because there where only 6 in australia at the time! One week later the sports edition protege came out but i wasn't fussed cause i wanted a hatch! Oh sorry i just rambled a whole heap of crap sorry! How much r those azenis's each cause i think i will go those!

09-02-2004, 07:06 PM
nathan,
DONOT get 215/45/16's for your wheels. they are way too big for a 6" rim and will peel off when going round your first corner
cheers mike

they work fine. a few ppl in america use them on the stock wheels and they work perfectly. they even use them for auto cross.
if the sidewalls were soft then there might be a problem, but because they are very hard (being a semi-slick afterall) they work perfect.
the falken azenis 215/45/16's cost around $240ea i think...not 100% sure. not cheap, but they are the best tire you can get that keeps the same rolling diameter as the oem tyre

no way the rolling diametter can be the same when sp20 has a 50 series an the falkens are a 45
but all that aside the speedo should still be ok
do uz know if they come in 205 not 215?
twilightprotege
09-02-2004, 10:43 PM
rod - they are 215 wide not 195.....
ezin - the only option if you want to keep the same rolling diameter on the stock wheels is 195/50 or 215/45. anything else and it will be off. but i dont think falken make them 205 wide
Dam! cheers! My mate at mazda told me customers who had put wider wheels or tyres on made the car feel like it was on tram tracks! So now my brain hurts! lol! They just had to be different!
twilightprotege
09-02-2004, 11:23 PM
if you're not worried about the speedo, 205/45/16 is the way to go. heaps and heaps and heaps of options in that size. i for one want to keep the speedo right, so 215/45 is it for road/race tyres
just keep in mind they are semi slicks. very few groves....so be very careful in the wet.......but flog it in the dry ;)
MMM speedo will read higher than actual speed so thats ok with me! If it was the other way around that would be bad!
twilightprotege
09-02-2004, 11:57 PM
if you want the speedo to read higher than your doing - 205/45/16
dfvadr
10-02-2004, 02:16 PM
i no about the width difference wat im saying is there a 45 an the sp is a 50 so the rolling diametter can not be the same
dont matter if its a 125x 45 or 365 x 45 its still a 45 not a 50 an the series determins the over-all diameter - ie rolling dia-
twilightprotege
10-02-2004, 03:29 PM
the series is only part of the rolling diameter. it combined with the width determines the rolling diameter. series is how tall the sidewall is in percentage compaired to the width. so 195/50 - the sidewalls are 9.75cm tall. 215/45 - the side walls are 9.67cm tall - close enough to be the same.
have a look here : http://www.dsm.org/tools/tiresize.htm and http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
As long as your running on the standard rim size then you can say that.

Tyres are labeled www/hh/rr lls
Where www is the overall width of the tyre in mm
hh is the height of the side wall from the rim to the outermost point and is expressed as a ratio of the width (see twilightproteges post)
rr the total diamater of the rim in inches (some BMW use mm but they are rare and obvious), multipy by 25.4 to convert to mm
ll is the load rating, the higher the number the higher the load rating
s is the speed rating, a letter, the closer to 'Z' the higher the speed rating
So the diamater of the standard BA 1.8 185/65/14 is 65% of 185 = 120.25mm top and bottom of the rim = 240.5mm plus the 14" rim (355.6mm).
Total 596.1mm
BA alloy option 195/55/15 is 55% of 195 = 107.25mm top and bottom of the rim = 214.5mm plus the 15" rim (381mm).
Total 595.5mm
Use this to calculate your original diamater then you can make variations to plan new tyre, rim combos

I'm in a lantis, but love the difference my a-symetrical yoka's have made.
The A-symetrical has removed alot of the understear problems in the lantis, but i'm not sure if this is such a problem in the sp20?
They non symetrical pattern allows good cornering and water clearence while not compromising to much on noise or wear - it just hurts the back pocket a little. :|
Sorry to bring this up again guys...
I am on the market for new tyres but not really wanting the standard Yoki 460's... I have been told the 205/45/R16 A539's will fit my rims... I asked if the speedo would be out and he said no, but before they fit them, they would do a thorough check.
I got quoted
$210 for the A539's in 205/45/R16
$198 for the 460's in 195/50/R16 (same as standard)
What other tyres can I look at? Falkens?
Thanks.

Try goodyear Eagle F1's, I think they are in the size you are after.

My Yokies lasted 24,000 km but they stuck like **** to a white blanket. At $195 a tyre though is a little steep, so I got onto the GT Radials for less than $130 a tyre. Grips levels are ok in the dry but no where as nice as the Yokies in the wet. So you need to take a little easier.
Also I found that having to high a tyre pressure you can lose quite a bit of mid corner grip with a SP20 because of the stiffer suspension. Standard tyre sizes I found 34 PSI cold is just about right. cheers 8)

Hi all I'm new, just thought I'd get straight into it.
Has anyone tried Kumho ECSTA SUPRA 712's on there SP20 they make a 195/50-16. I have them on my Skyline and they seem to be very good just wondering how they would go on a front wheel drive?
