V6 stina Vs Commodore on fuel

Anyone owned or driven a 96 era commodore and a V6 astina?

Which used more fuel???


Was having a look at fuel useage for 1996 cars (my year) in redbook.com.au http://www.redbookasiapacific.com/au/ and was quite/very surprised when I compared a 2.0l V6 Astina and a 3.8l V6 Commodore both in manual.

Which do you think has better fuel econamy?

Commodore, hmm surprised me

Even more surprising was by how much, 5% more efficent urban, then 25% more efficent Extra Urban,
Shocking stuff.
And then more again when you consider you are comparing

24 Value DOHC 2.0l with very aerodynamic design and smaller frontal surface area
Vs
12 value Pushrod 3.8l packing another 182kg

Sure I am comparing base model commo vs the heaviest astina but still,

As quoted on Redbooks,

323 V6
11L/100km urban and 8.5L/100km extra urban

Commo
10.5L/100km urban and 6.8L/100km extra urban.


To me this could only mean the astina runs way richer, or consistanly runs at double the revs or mix of both.

Anyone wanna know how this makes sence cause it baffles me,

i thoguht that the commodore was definately more than that
like we have a VT commodore n id guess theyd use less fuel than a 96 one. but the ecotec engine is a really old one from a buick or somthing

Correct the ECOtec is a buick engine.. Don't forget though that to get anywhere in our cars you have to rev the engine.. As the Commodore has a 3.8Lt V6 they're big and lazy and don't need much pressure on the throttle to go anywhere under normal driving conditions. Cruising speed [60-80km/h] in a commodore sits somewhere in the rev range of around 2000rpm, not much really.. In our little cars it's higher up so of course we're going to use more fuel.

Freeway travelling, if i'm not using the air-con i can get 350kms on half a tank. That's pretty good. :)

The VS is 100 odd kgs lighter than the the VT ... on our VT wagon (lightest of the VT's) we can get anywhere from 400 around the city (or 350 in drift mode ;) shhh) and up to 800 on the hwy ... thats out of a 60l tank

you dont want to know the fuel consumption for the x6 ute :p

We had a VR Commondoor. It averaged around 15-16L/100km.
I get around 10L/100km on mine.

My BA2.0V6 manual gets 8.6L/100 highway and 9.6L/100 overall.
Sits on about 3000rpm @ 100km/h - higher revs than a commodore
In general, auto's use taller (numerically lower) final gearing than manuals and this will effect rpm and economy figures

Redbook is quoting the makers advertised figures, they havn't actualy done any tests. I never had those figures when I drove VTs and to many peoples surprise I was always one of the more economical cars in the fleet.

fleet cars are always the quickest cars you will ever drive! and every single one is 4wd ... you can take them anywhere!!

The VN was the most fun.
I hit the rev limiter in 1st (manual trans) and the rev limiter cut the engine so harshly I brused ny head on the steeringwheel and then almost had whiplash as the engine turned back on @ 5500rpm. The big orange 'T' on the door was a dead giveaway though.

I only had two but most reports were total BS. A friend was filling with fuel 30km away from where he was reportedly tailgating someone.

I get about 10l/100,
but mostly I just drive to and from work and other traffic runs,
7 km, like 12 traffic lights and takes 20-25 mins in the morning, ggrrrrr.


performance wise anyone know how a police commodore ute/paddy wagon goes against mine???

I found out on friday night, no not running from cops,

following this paddywagon home from hornsby down pennat hills road say 8kms, he is giving it some so I let him get away from me each after each stop but stay sorta close,

anyway I lose him, come to a red light at pennant hills and he is stopped there, I go down into second to see if I can get a roll through, and wahla it turns green so I start from about 2200 in second (I think) and get in front of him, he did not seem to like this so plants it, not no half arsed i'll follow him nah he wants to be the leader, so this padywagon is screaming its head off just behind me and im there thinking well I am under the speed limit and I could not possibly make as much noise (from operation) as he his, (couldn't even hear mine at any time) so lets how this plays out.

he catches me and holds about close as I am going around 4-5000, he starts pulling away not as quickly as I would expect from a police car getting that sort of abuse, and then I back of as it is a 70 zone, and he flys away going way faster than he has been.

made my night really,
couldn't help laughing the rest of the way home.

For an engine that's supposed to be GM's latest and greatest, i'm NOT very impressed! :(

My Husband drives a VS, and it goes SURPRISINGLY well on fuel, although It tends to need Everything replaced (we had to get a reconditioned motor for it a few months ago) He loves the car, & it looks nice but i am really starting to hate the ol' commodoore

oH AND i might mention ive only EVER needed to replace a tail light on my car, yet weve spent about $4,000 - $ 5,000 on the VS Commo just cause it wants to be a piece of s#!t :p

i used to have a 96 auto exec commo. it was terrible on fuel.. i used to putt around and only get 400k's out of a full tank.. the v6 astina is heaps better, over 500k's to a tank. i'd also rather the mazda on windy road, and probably in a straight line..

i had a holden mechanic go over the car looking for faults and replacing sensors - nothing was found to fix it.. i cut my losses after 6 months and sold it (well i was over it in 2-3months, but had to work up to telling parents at the time).

had the mazda for a few years now without a hitch, touch wood. and that one dodgy commodore put me off buying one a few months ago when we were after a big car - now have a 02 falcoon and the mazda.

went on the cruise on saturday and was very very happy with fuel consumption, showed up with half a tank of reg fuel and yeah it lasted the day 300 odd kms included one veryveryveryveryveryvery fun uphill run, wasn't giving it all its got but sure wasn't going lightly.
