A question to our resident audiophiles, I currently run an Alpine CDA-7842R and it has a Bass Frequency Setting. I had my battery disconnected to do some welding on the xzorst so obviously all my previous settings are lost so I have to revist and do everything again. It gives me the option of setting the Bass Frequency at 60,70,80 or 100Hz. Your opinions of what the best optimal setting would be. The HU is connected to a 500W V12 amp and bass is supplied by a 12" VR sub.

Secondly, I am considering either adding an mp3 stacker to my system or replacing the current HU with one that supports MP3. Either way it works out the same price wise, I like the idea of the 6 cd stacker as it gives me roughly 3Gb of data space to store mp3s with (assuming 500mb / cd) but my HU is getting kind of tired and old looking so I wouldnt mind updating to a nice new silver one. The one in mind is a CDA-7894RB link (http://www.alpine.com.au/active_pages/headunits_page.asp) so just after your thoughts on this HU.

Specs at a glance include:
- Max Tune Pro RDS Tuner
- MP3 Playback CD-R/CD-RW (ID Tag 3)
- Bass Engine Plus Sound Technologies
- 60Watts x 4 Amplifier
- 4-Channel Time Correction
- Treble/Bass Frequency Control
- Built-in Crossover Control
- Full MP3 Changer Control
- 4 Volt Pre-Out (x3 sets)
- Subwoofer Level Control
- Media Xpander Sound Technology

I do prefer alpine, I have been very happy with the current HU and dont particuarly wont to sway to another brand. I have looked at the JVC units but they are a couple hundred more then what i want to spend. Pionner dont do it for me, kenwood and sony... meh. Clarion are ok but the HUs are as ugly as Sandymans mum.

Cheers.

'Bass Frequency' ?

Would that be a Cut-Off Filter, or some kind of Bass Boost at that frequency ? Maybe the manual will tell you ...

It really depends on the other speakers you have running, what kind of freq they cover properly. personally, I'd set it at 60hz, maybe 70hz. Try each setting with a varied selection of music and choose which you like, i suppose. You might find that you get rattles at some settings to.

I can look at what my setting is if u want. its in there somewhere amongst the other dozens of equaliser settings ...

The HU sounds pretty nice. The good thing about sticking with the same brand as your current HU is that its most likely that the wiring plug at the back will be the same, eliminating the need to re-wire the system. Just plug the old plug into the new HU !! 2min installation, cant get better than that :)

Im still waiting to get my 40gig mp3 hard drive fixed. Cant wait !!

From the manual:

The bass control centre frequency can be set at 60, 70,80 or 100Hz.

I was thinking some sort of filter but not sure
