At the moment I only have dial up and it disconnects after 5 hours. This is a pain if I want to download bigish files. Someone told me the other day that there is a program available that you can use to download files/programs etc and if you don't finish it in one go you can go back later on and finish downloading the file etc. Do these programs exist and if so what is a good one to use?

you can get a program that dose what you want but i can't think of any off the top of my head.
depending on what you'll looking to download you may wanna look into downloading a bit-Torrent program. These are pretty good except you can only download files made as torrents. I use one called ABC, which you can download here (http://pingpong-abc.sourceforge.net/download.php) . After that you just find a torrent you wanna download and it'll keep track of it for you.
if ya have anymore questions let me know ;)

Gee I wonder what you use peer to peer programs for :S
Ripper- the programs you are after are called Download Managers. The most commonly used one is called Flasget, however if you use Firefox go and download a program called NetTransporter and get the Firefox extension called FlashGot.
Like Chimpy said, there's FlashGet: http://www.amazesoft.com/
There's also Download Accelerator Plus: http://www.speedbit.com/

Download Accelerator and GetRight are 2 of the older and more feature full HTTP(S) and FTP download managers.
Personally I've always used GetRight and never had any problems. One feature that I liked years ago when on dial-up was its bandwidth limiting feature which worked quite good. Made it easier to still use the net while still downloading.

If you're looking at downloading torrent files, i'd suggest an application called, BitSpirit. As the homepage is constantly changing, just google it.
If you're looking at P2P software, i'd suggest Ares Galaxy, not any other similar names since their fake and contain spyware. You can download the original from here (http://aresgalaxy.sourceforge.net/). This program is very similar to other P2P applications like, KaZZa, LimeWire and iMesh but without the annoying GUI and Spyware.
If you're simply downloading large files from a website, I suggest you head over to download.com (http://www.download.com/) and search for an application known as, "Free Download Manager". It works exactly the same as the mentioned above, FlashGet, Download Accelerator and GetRight but it's free so you don't need to view annoying Register this product or ad's posted all over the application.

Can I just point out that at no time did Ripper323 mention torrent files! If that was what he was doin he wouldn't need the type of program he is asking for.
