View Full Version : Front Wheel Noise
My car has started making a vibrationy type noise from the front wheels. :( I suppose the best way to make the same noise is to say "woodwoodwoodwoodwood".
The noise gets faster with increase in speed and is louder when I go around corners and the tyres load up.
I've narrowed it down to a few possibilities:
Tyre flatspotted
Wheel out of balance
Warped Brake Discs
Wheel Bearings
CV Joints
The noise seems to come from both wheels and doesn't cause any vibration through the steering when travelling, cornering or breaking so I can probably eliminate the brake discs and balance issues.
Are these the sort of noises that buggered CV joints make? either way, it doesn't look like a cheap fix :(
What do you guys think?
CV's make more of a clacking sound and usually don't get them driving straight. - easiest way to check these is to see how much greese is spattered on the inside of your rims.
Flatspotted tyre - well have you locked 'em up recently?? Left your car with a flat for too long etc...
From what you are saying there is no sensation comming up through the steering, so i'd be goingfor the bearings or CV's.
CV's will set you back $120 for a set + labour, but they are easy to do yourself. You will also need to get yourself some Man Trans Oil.
Good luck !!

Sounds like it could be your wheel bearings dude :( Cause from your description,it sounded like the noise my old car made when the wheel bearing were shot
Get it checked out
Catch ya :D
Poo Bum Wee :(
That's sort of the way I was leading as well. Due for a service in a week or two so will get the Mazda 'spcialists' to have a look and see what they say.

Yeah, wheel bearing! Unfortunatley, these are expensive. They need to be replaced ASAP, otherwise they can seize up and lock up while the car is in motion which is not good if you are travelling at 100kmph.
not to steal the topic,
but on a similar note, I've been getting some shuddering for a while. It happens when braking, and when turning right at a decent speed.
Im sure it cant be good. Any ideas what it could be ?

That sounds like your front disk brakes could be warped a little dude, been doing any hard braking??

Could be a worn engine mount, they can cause shuddering/vibrations, but I think more so when accelerating rather than braking.

hey just recently my CV joint went on just the left side. i had a "clunk" just every now and then when i braked and then accelerated. after about a week of this it started going clunkclunkclunkclunkclunk so the i back out of a car park and chucked it in first, went to take off and she just went GRRRRRRRRRUUUUUUURRRRR and wouldnt move i had to push it back into the park and later on get it towed (very inconvenient) but ur problem sounds very similar.
i think ur best bet is to get it checked out. and if thats the prob u could prolly DIY. i wouldve if time permitted!! :?

Yeah you don't wanna leave something like that until it breaks... wheel bearings can destroy the hubs when they fail (think big $$ for more parts) and CVs can take out other stuff if the snap at the wrong end and let things flail around ....

Wheel bearings arent expensive at all if you know where to look
Get a quote (don't get it done yet!!) and let me know how much, parts and labour separate. let me know and let me know make/model/year of your car and i'll see if i can help (i work in the bearing industry)

I had this problem with my 97 Astina and found the tyres had become oval. I didnt replace the shocks and am on another set of tyres same brand, size etc and they are good. An easy test is to jack up the wheel and spin the tyre, with your hand feel the tread for high spots.

Hey Andy just tighten up the wheel nuts first... could be the nuts are a tiny bit loose causing the wheel to vibrate.. Have you had your wheel off lately...
Might save you some heart ache and money
Its worth a check
Jacked the car up and pulled one wheel off last night to have a look. No visible play in any joints, no ticking clicking or anything like that. There's a slight grinding noise when you turn the wheel but you've got to listen pretty damn hard to hear it.
100% positive that its not the wheel nuts being loose.
Does anyone know how to get the damn hub nut off? The one that's about 50mm diameter with the lock down bit in the middle. I bent up the lock bit but couldn't for the life of me get the nut to turn (and yes, I did try both ways but didn't know which way was proper)
I'm leaning more towards ovalised tyres at the moment. If I get the motivation tonight I might try swapping them front to back and see if the noise still happens. :(

You need a big bar on the end of the wratchet to turn it.. its a bitch!!! I just got the driveshaft place to do mine...
How big a friggin' bar do you need?
We had a crowbar between the wheelnuts stopping the hub from turning around and a 40cm shifter on the end of the socket handle!!! :x
Do you know which wheel is left hand threaded and which one is normal :?:
di both CV's a few months ago - yeah it was a bitch getting that nut off. ust took it to my mate place (he is a mechanic) and borrowed his tools.

Wouldn't read about it, I've started getting a similar noise. Sounds kinda like a train. Doesn't get louder, just varies with speed. Luckily it's going in for service on Friday...

I've just done the CVs today, clikityclikityclikityclikityclikityclikity. I had the box out last year and the front wheel hub was removed from the car and left to sit on the brake shield. The brake shield bent just enough to rub on the disk, whoopwhoopwhoopwhoopwhoopwhoop.
Check the guard liner you had removed at CAI day is in the correct possition and not rubbing on anything.

Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
The CV's on the left that were making the loud clikityclikityclikityclikityclikityclikity noise was masking the soft clikityclikityclikityclikityclikityclikity noise on the right
I pledge that I will reduce the full lock, full throtlle, handbrake on turns   . Well I'll try anyway

Was going to post a new thread about this particular problem, but then I saw this gem. After doing an advanced driving course (Thrashing the tar out of my car!!) I noticed a shuddering noise coming from the left hand side whenever I turn left (not right). After a month of letting it slip (not enough cash or time and tools for the job) it has gradually got worse and now vibrates under acceleration. I'm assuming this is from worn bearings, broken engine mount, cv joints or springs, no. Either way it'll be booked into a garage next week and I was just wondering if it is safe to drive until I do so?
Cheers guys.

I wouldn't be doing many full lock, full throtlle, handbrake on turns. I'm sure there are cars out there in worse condition that the owners aren't considering repairing.

Weird... She was acting up all this morning (almost sounded like the whole front axle was going to fall apart from the vibrations), then as soon as it hits mid-day she feels as smooth as she ever has been since I first bought her. hmmmm....
