View Full Version : What's the deal.......A spring related Q...

OK, i'm a little freaked out by this..

I've spoken to a few people about lowering lately, and it would seem that lowering the Astina 2 inches is a good compromise between looks and comfort.

Now, it would also seem that the springs don't sit in there collars when the car is jacked up.....is this normal?? Tony, Mal, Dan, Mick??? I'm just a little freaked out as some of you will remember how my first attempt into lowering my car ended up....

I've made some enquiries with K-Mac and am waiting on their reply.... If all is good, i'd like to have them and installed in the next 2 weeks. Fingers crossed.......

Please help :? :? :?

ah who cares..

mine is lowered 3" and at one point 4+" and it never caused a problem.. if you are really worried get kmac to make you up some custom shocks so they dont fall out of place...

2" is all you need for the centre of gravity advantage to occur. Lowering
any further is mainly just visual. The springs can become unsprung when
lifting the car off the ground but is more a problem with linear over
progressive springs. How often you plan to do this for it to be an issue.
It hasn't happened to me with my whiteline 3" ones in 5 years.
I thought KMac were a little dear when people spoke about the a while
ago.

Anything else just ask.

When I was young and stupid (Yes I'm no no longer young) I had a friend who lowered his car so much he had to avoid streets like Grant St.

It's a B'rat thing.

Just as a point of interest, I looked into getting a set of Ground Control coil over sleeves for the car (same as wot dans running).

At the time (Feb i think it was) I was quoted $450US shipped to me.

Roughly $700 considering current exchange rates.

most lowering springs pop out of the collars when not compressed by the weight of the car, simply because they're shorter than the standard springs which were designed to remain 'captive' when the car is on a hoist etc.

Don't worry about it, mine certainly aren't!

The next question would be; Do i need to get some camber pins as well??

I know that Mike doesn't have them...... and he's 2 inches lower too.

Your starting to remind me of someone :P :P :P

Just put the springs in and get your car alignment. :D

Only put the pins in when you need them to get a correct
alignment. They are simply to add extra negative camber
which is only needed if you want heaps of neg camber for
hard corner (But wears out the insides) or if the car is lowered
heaps and is needed to correct the factory setup which cant
adjust for that much lowering. They are not a handling item
at all by themselves.

Ladies and Gentlemen.....

The 2 inch lowering coils, rear sway and front strut have now been ordered.....now I play the waiting game.. and so do you to see what it looks like  AND the 2 inch lowering coils from whiteline DO remain captive [which is a legal requirement BTW for those who haven't got theirs lowered!]

All from whiteline. If anyone is interested about part numbers let me know....

Fingers crossed i get them and installed before the meet [read cruise!] Hopefully i wont be disappointed again.....  :?

Cheers

We have ways and meens of keepin' springs in the right place.

And if all else fails you can get the shocks short stroked, keeps the springs very cosy.

Heh! Yeh!! Whiteline has assured me that all coils manufactured by them are designed to reamain captive.. I just hope they haven't fibbed!

I emailled the chick at Autospeed.com and she has organised for my strut brace and sway bar to be sent today, i should have them on Friday hopefully.

Man! 15 July sounds so far away!

Yeah thats the exact same strut brace as mine :P I was thinking of painting the ends red but,to go with the rest of the detailed bits

BigMal

Adam,
Any chance you can trace out one of the ends for me. Mine is a Pedders
strutbrace which is actually for a BG as at the time nobody made a BA
and Whiteline weren't interested when we did my R&D stuff. The BG had
to be modified and the result is my Bar needs to be tilted forward so not
to hit the back of the bonnet.

I also find the rear sway funny its so boxy. When they did the one on
mine which is blue not grey I thought this is pretty slapped up, sure they
will add some bends in it the make it look flashy for the retail version.
But they haven't :D

Yeh man, no worries..... I'll scan it and send it to your email address

Heh, that's what I thought when i took it out of the box.. I imagined it to look something like the factory one, just bigger... I thought they had sent me the wrong one!

I thought I'd take a pic of the springs as well, just for show.. They've changed the colour of these too i believe... T'would be nice to have the front set too!

Alrighty... I've finally received the front coils for the car.. and this afternoon I did the rounds quickly at some suspension places here in Ballarat.. SO far BeauRepairs and the Mazda service place have quoted me around $240 for 2 hours labour.. I think that $120 an hour is a bit bloody expensive..

What should I be looking at paying for such a thing?? It's for fitment of front and rear springs and rear sway..

I'll be ringing The Tyre Factory at Sunshine tomorrow to see what they quote me..

Bit friggin ridiculous..

HHHMmmmm. very tempting.... Can you get a lock nut off without the key?? I don't know what's happened to it when we moved house.. I was sure it was in the car and I've practically taken it apart trying to find it but to no luck.. I've also searched all the boxes in the garage too and it's not there either.. Not happy Jan.. It's one thing after another at the moment!

Sure I can remove the lock-nuts.........

You may not be happy with my non-judicious use of an 100 mm angle grinder.
