For those whom may have an 'illegal' copy of Windows XP Home or Professional, Microsoft have released a new update in which will have the Windows Genuine Check program incorporated in it. Depending on how you have set-up your PC to handle Updates recieved by Microsoft, you may be able to avoid this from downloading and being installed on your system. If this program is installed on your system, you will no longer recieve updates by Microsoft, be unable to install certain Microsoft products (Most likely all Microsoft products in-time), annoying icon in the task bar and a welcome screen when your pc is restarted informing you that you are running a pirate copy of Windows XP.
The different update settings you can choose from are...
Automatic.(Recommened by Microsoft)
Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them.
Notify me, but don't automaticly download or install them. (Recommended by me).
Turn off automatic updates. (NOT Recommened by me or Microsoft)
The titles pretty much sum up which each different setting will do.
The benefits of selecting "Notify me, but do not download or install them", is that you are able to choose which updates you want downloaded and installed when there are updates available, hence, being able to avoid this particular update and others similar.
I have posted this topic for those of you who may be running an illegal copy of Windows XP and so that you won't need to face the penalties which may occur.
To change your update settings; Click 'START', then select, 'SETTINGS' and then 'Control Panel'.
When the Control Panel screen appears select, 'SYSTEM'.
When the System box appears, at the top select the, 'AUTOMATIC UPDATES' tab.
From here on you'll be able to see the previous update choices you have and the selection is up to you.
Regards,
Christopher van Dal.

Other options are using autopatcher and there is also a mozilla site that I can post later that acts exactly like the micorosft update site but no checking.
p.s anybody that is worried make a backup of your winlogin.exe file as that
is the file that microsoft changes when it stops the system for being illegal.

why dont you recommend turning off automatic updates?
Because, rarely will Microsoft do anything which is actualy helpfull, and most their updates are helpfull =) Having said this, yes you can manage without them, but if you CAN get them, it's a good idea.

Taken from another site that also took from another site..as you do !!
Possible workaround here. Contains the legitcheck.dll with an installer
http://www.filehd.com/1/559193268/index.php
another option here:
http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/
or here:
http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/index.html
or just use autopatcher.
and some help from another forum:
got burned totay with this silly logon - not genuine bull**** after i did an update.
i had a look in my system32 folder and luckily i found a "winlogon.bak" dating back to 2004 ...
i simply renamed the updated "winlogon.exe" to something else and renamed the
"winlogon.bak" back to "winlogon.exe"
did a reboot - and the whole silly messagebox bull**** went away ;-)
cool - isn't it ?
it seems MS was not quite sure if it's really wise to leave millions of systems
worldwide without a quick way to bring them back to the state prior to this update....
or:
* Run Task Manager
* Kill the WgaTray.exe Process
* Go to System32 folder
* Rename wgatray.exe and wgalogon.dll to something else
* Restart
* End of annoying messages

Hope this helps someone.

I heard of a certain Chicaboo with 2 PCs and 3 Windows XP Home licences, that hasn't gotten around to buying a new HDD so that he can install one of the licences onto the said new HDD. This Chicaboo doesn't feel it worthwhile installing a licence on the small HDD running out of space before the new HDD is purchased, so he is running Windows XP Coorperate for the time being...
And for myself, I found the windows updates to be more trouble than they are worth. A prime example of this would be the updates for Windows 98SE, which would cause strange abherations and stability issues in the program thereafter. The single worst and most evil known to mankind would have to be Service Pack 2 for Windows XP. Whatever changes it made to the core caused many old and once reliable programs to stop working totally or in varying degrees. A popular example was Nero 6, which would lock up or spit the dummy if you pressed the "Add" button. A way around this I found was to drag and drop to bypass the problems. Widcomm Bluetooth software also needed to be rewritten to accommodate the SP2 update...
However that being said, MS Windows XP COORPERATE was never released for sale, so how can it be illegal?

SP2 incorporated a lot of needed security fixes. But with an update that big, I reinstalled windows with SP2 Rolled in anyway. Never had the problems you seem to of. And Widcomm drivers suck. But so do the MS generic ones. I wish there was a nice medium.

The XP WDM Bluetooth driver is only good for Remote Control. It's the pits for sending/receiving files. Widcomm drivers can't decide if they ever want to work or not, better for sending/receiving files, spaz for most anything else...
I'm going to reinstall XP with SP1A, and then turn off updates. I don't have any secutity problems, running through a fully stealthed NAT router (even with some dummy ports) seems to keep me safe...
