I own a 93 Astina and i want to know what i can do for power.
I am going to get a new exhaust system but what would be the best size. I have been told that because i have over 100,000kms (130,000kms) that i shouldnt go over 2". Is this true? I am also going to get a replacement K&N filter and i want to set up cold air intake but where can i run the piping? How do i change the timing and will this do much at all? What other things can i do?
Thanks...

Wow, that's a lot you've just asked!! I certainly hope that you got the wrong information regarding the exhaust, as I've done well over 100K, and am looking at (eventually) getting 2.25in exhaust installed. Advancing the timing can increase performance, but there are two things to look out for:

1) Advance it too far, and you get pinging. This WILL destroy your engine quicker than you can say "I want turbo".
2) You will have to run Premium Unleaded to avoid pinging even at small level of timing advancement.

As for CAI (Cold Air), see some of our other posts on the topic, it's been talked about a fair bit just recently.

Oh, yeah, welcome aboard the craziest ship in town!

Oh, BTW, I think the actual term for "pinging" is detonation...

So where exactly do i run the piping **** for the CAI??? Its a 93.

Oh, BTW, I think the actual term for "pinging" is detonation...

actually it is called 'pre ignition' hence ping. it is what happens when the fuel ignigtes before the piston is all the way to the top causing it to be forced down before it is ready...

MrShadow

Trav ==> Ahh yeah, sorry. Detonation is where you have something like a lead deposit on the cylinder wall that ignites the fuel/air mix. Pre ignition is exacxtly what you said.

UNV-323 ==> Anywhere you can make it fit! The best place for the inlet is somewhere in the front bar, not too low otherwise you'll be picking up more crud than you should. The other end should run into the bottom of the airbox. However you route it between the two ends is up to you. The best pipe to use is ag line (apparantly), for a couple of reasons:

1) It's flexible
2) The corrugations help reduce the amount of water/crud reaching the air filter.

The only disadvantage is that you can only buy it in 10m (?) lengths...

You can get more Ag line if u need it, just need to be ordered.

I have 20m of 100mm ag line under my house. Its unslotted so is perfect for CAI stuff.

ok ive just had a look at my air box and i cant see a place where i can run it???? its a 93 and i cant see a gap where i can place the pipe... where can i get the ag line or whatever it is i need???? thanks.

Where are you UNV-323 ??
Bit hard to tell you to wait till dark and look under jims house if
you live in FNQ.
Are you sure you looked under the airbox and didn't see or feel
the black pipe that goes to the res chamber. Does your airbox
sit beside the motor or tucked right against the right guard over
the inner guard.

Mal

hmm, yeah, sorry UNV-323, you actually replace the hose going into the airbox.

Yea i felt that black pipe and it runs down and back up and sits behind the head light and it looks like the air flow there is really restricted. where do i run it instead of there??? i cant see a space to put it... im in tamworth nsw by the way

BigMal

So must be getting bloody cold then out there.

That black pipe you take off and also the res box which sits inside
the inner guard and the ag pipe takes its place and comes round to the
front of the guard. Jynx's photo's should give you a good idea if he can
paste the link again.

hmmm...the mall? in tamworth? all the hoons do constant laps of peel street and just park there... these are usually the tools with their 'sick' geminis or vl's(pieces of **** with dress rims and sound systems). Although recently theres been some nice cars cruising round like some supras, 300zxs, gti-r's, and even some kool astinas. If u know the guy who owns FAT323, his car is ok but a sick bodykit wouldnt be a bad thing to add. well enough babbling... that link jynx? please???

Hmmm.
Um, what can I say about your rear end??????????

Trav
29-05-2003, 08:57 AM
no pics of mine (yet...scanner arrives soon and along with a dig camera yay!!!).

I have the same style as Dan's, but a bit smaller on the back, and also had tow smaller ones made for the little windows behind the rear door. I've had quite a few comments on those too - stand out, but not too obtrusive...

haha i actually sold another one on the weekend! LOL

but yeah, i prefer the white, as it's easier to read as it's not as reflective. but yeah, it's just personal preference :)

i'm trying to get kitty to buy one too, but she likes her 'kitty' sticker on her hatch.

i bought my astinagt sticker off Dan, and it rocks... when i fork out for a digital camera, i'll have plenty of pics to post up!!

Trav

Yes Kitty quite liked my little ones for the side, and said she would get them if the price was right....

MrShadow

I got mine of Dan too. Looks good on the back of the hardtop. Pity us hardtop owners can't use the smaller ones for the side windows. Oh, well, that's the price you pay for driving something with a bit more style. (oohh, I might start something here! :P :P ) I've got some pictures, just need to finish the roll of film, can't afford a digital camera like all you other rich pricks.   JK.

Me neither, I'd rather have my SLR though. Takes a better photo anyway and anyday!

Yes, well, that is true. But you know what takes an even better picture (when you have a Pentax MZ-50 vs $100 Pentax compact, and an area with extremes of light and dark)? The pentax compact! The SLR under exposed the dark and over exposed the light, while the compact took (for all intents and purposes) a perfect picture! Go figure. :?

mrpayner
29-05-2003, 09:22 PM
Hahaha, were those cameras just plucked out of your head, or did you know that I had an MZ-50?? I also have an SP1000 Pentax. Vintage stuff, going back to the screw mount days of lens fitment.....

It's good fun though

hehe, I would like to claim that I can read your mind, but my dad own an MZ-50, and we both took a picture of th same thing.

mrpayner
30-05-2003, 11:35 AM
we both took a picture of th same thing.

Did you take it to the same lab on the same day, as this would make a difference too.. [believe it or not] :)

I've taken the same photo to a couple of different places and found that none of the prints were the same. I was quite suprised actually to find this out.

Just go the digital for the plain cinvenience of being able to take som reasonable shots and able upload/delete/view easily - and don't have to worry about film or developing fees.

I also am an SLR freak -Have a Canon EOS50, standard 28-80 f3.5-5.6 and 75-300 f4-5.6. I am looking to the canon 2x lens extender, but at $850 it can wait a bit (anyway - i need to remove this 4x4 **** that I keep getting heckled about...Thanks Dan...)

And - Pentax K-1000. Standard lens, zoom and wide angle. Nice mechanical camera, and both take some fantastic shots. Now I have a scanner I'll get off my butt and get them all up...one day...
