hello guys,

i just got a mazda astina from my father but i don't know what type - i only know its 323 Astina 1.8l 16V '96 and not lantis - it's come with 4 wheel disc brake.

my question is what type of engine it use?here in my country (Malaysia) they all talk about B8 engine is the most powerfull engine for mazda but i read in wikipedia that The 1.8 L (1839 cc) BP is a dual-overhead variant of the B8 engine and the BPT is a turbocharged and intercooled variant of the BP, correct me if i'm wrong.

i'd like to upgrade this baby of mine to become more powerfull - anybody got an idea?

Without accually seeing the car, I'd say you'd have the BP 1.8 engine...

BPT or BPD would be a good power upgrade.

The B8 210hp you talk of is what we refer to as a Famailia GTR engine with 156kw, the BPT came in the Familia GTX and has 134kw and the BP non turbo which you have in your car has 92kw. Both the GTX and GTR engines are turbo with the GTR having larger turbo and a host of other extra goodies but very hard to find. Do a search there are many places that Rob has listed with pics the differences between GTX and GTR.

It is possible that his (or her) car has the B8 SOHC version of the BP though.

In NZ we get a lot of Jap imports and by reading these forums we get a lot of model variations which you guys haven't even heard of. Malaysia might be the same.

amirulismai, if you show us a pic of the engine we'll be able to identify if it's B8 or BP.

Well, it's a BP 1.8 DOHC then.

A slim chance it could be the 1.5 - i'm not sure whether they were SOHC or DOHC.

There is an 1800 SOHC 16v in Japan...

There is the 1500, 1600 and 1800 all in SOHC with both 16v and 8v and also DOHC 16v versions of all of them.
