Ok boys!
i just recd the above in the mail.

DEFECT REPORT : An authorised officer reasonably suspects or is satisfied that the above mentioned motor vehicle does not comply with the state environmental legislation"

and now i have to

"Rectify exhaust noise level . The limit for your vehicle is 90dB(A) at 4500 engine RPM"

Letter states i gotta take my car to exhaust fitter licensd by the Motor Vehicle Repair Industry Authority to have it tested.

Whats the friggin go here?Has anyone receive anything similiar.

i dont think my exhaust is that loud, much softer than my original 2.5" muffler.

And if i do get it tested, do i have to pay???Pretty unfair for me to waste money based on some EPA officers "opinion"

BTW : The date of notice states 8.11.06, the only time i drove was to pick up brother from station!!!!!thats like a 5min trip!!

haha owned...if its too loud, then you gotta fix it...

call the exhaust place first and ask whether you pay if it is legal...

Bro, if it's a 4cyl the rating is done at 4000rpm. If not, you live in a gay state... :p

Arden's exhaust is not loud. He can go jump through hoops, and then send the bill to our wonderful government for his time and the cost of the EPA report.

Find out how they supposedly tested your car to know that its over 90db in the first place
If theyre making a guess then its just not good enough

gav, i thought it was like skitz said...but a % in rpm of where your peak power is...ive got the rules for the testing somewhere...but its too early too search :P

yeah well in my impreza they made me sit it on 4k and the red line was 6.5k so what ever that works out at lol

the astina i have reds at 7k so i am gussing that if i had to do this it couldnt be higher than 4.250k

so eather way 4.5 sounds a bit too high

hey, i got the same thing a few weeks ago for my exhaust when i got a random breath test, the cop doesn't actually test it at all he just guessed that it was too loud and sent me to get it tested and changed.

i did a test and they held the revs at 4500rpm and that was for my BA hatch, also when i got my engineers certificate done the engineer tested it at the same rpm. when it was tested it was 90.5 decibels so it was hardly over and with a tiny bit of adjustment we got it back down to a nice and legal 89 decibels ;)

its just frustrating having to go and get it all checked and then cleared by the mechanic and then having to go to the rta aswell.

Been talking to the guys in my office and they basically said someone dobbed me in.
Can this happen????i mean if its true its pretty unjust..prolly means even if i pass, someone has got some beef for me and will keep on reporting my car to the authorities!!!

yeah i have heard of people getting defects in the mail but they had never been pulled over by cops and were wondering where it came from. im not totally sure how it works though. hopefully you can get it cleared easily.

My factory muffler got a reading of something like 82db. My exhaust was built so that the original muffler can put swapped on for these tests.

Alright, i rang up the EPA.
They said an EPA officer spotted my car along Parramatta Road, Stanmore.
i mustve ticked them off or something coz its a 60km/h limit and that road is notorious for cops at night!!

Also found out the same notice can be sent out if EPA receives 2 complaints from general public within a 30 day period.

i have a full 2.5inch exhaust the whole way through with high-flow cat two stainless steel mufflers at the back that dont really do anything so it is really loud (90.5db) with the totally stock exhaust system and muffler it was 71 db. thats unlucky you got dobbed in!

hmm i think i might creep just in under 90dBa then. coz my zorst aint even loud.
only has a deep tone to it after 4000rpms.

Could you just shove some thing up the exhaust which would restrict flow thus reduce noice for the test?

If you do have to do something do what dogo did,

Ive also got a gavspec xforce twin loop muff (designed to be quiet) but at times i think my magnaflow sounds sorta similiar. So i mite put that one to see how it compares.

i think shoving chicken wire is one tactic which some ppl do.

I've heard of steel wool being used in the past.

If you feel like a bit of effort, you could put a restrictor plate in one of the flanges. Just something with a smaller hole in it that your exhaust

my dad used steel wool for his motorbike DB test 30 odd years ago

if it comes in under send a letter to the EPA for a refund and compensation for time and fuel to go get it tested

forgot to update my own thread.
the nite before, i whacked on my Xforce Twin Loop Gavspec super dooper quiet muffler on.
Come morning drove to Sureflow Exhaust to get it tested. Came in at 110db@4000rpm
Was a bit shocked since the twin loop was extremely stock sounding.

Spoke to the owner and a dude who designed the pacemakers for the sp20 to see wot they could do. They recommended i change the piping from 2.5" to 2" from car to rear axle...now of course i was a bit stumped since being on various forums, the optimal pipin seemed to be 2.25". But i gave in....these are the so called experts......they whacked on resonator and got it re-tested. came in at around 93db..was absolutely spewing coz it sounded real nice, so they had to add an extra resonator!!!

Final result was around 88db.

paid $220 for the trouble. Drove off with a frown as the lovely purrr of my old zorst was gone.

upside..my low end power is back.

unfortanetly epa dont pull you over they only have to follow you or be sitting on the side of the rd and monitor cars an trucks then they just send the notice through the mail , i remember when they were always sitting on belambi creek mt ousley watching the trucks if they blew smoke for more then 10 seconds after a gear change they were sent a defect , for you that dont no belambi creek its a steep hill an we all no deisel blows smoke under load
