Evening all. I'm getting my car valued for insurance, and my provider told me I have to get it from a qualified person, like a mechanic or panel beater. Seriously, can mechanics value cars?? Anyway, has anyone else done this, and who did you get it done by? I think a car dealer would be better, but who knows :)

imo just insure it for market value. most insurers charge you more for an "agreed" value of insurance which is still pointless because an insurer will only ever pay you what it's worth. they arent going to pay out on a car that if in good condition was $10k and you insured it for $10k when in reality the car is more like $2k worth.
best thing to do it to make up proof of what it's worth, therefore increasing the market value of the car. ie take photos of the good paint, wheels, engine work, interior etc. prove to them the market value is more than the next car they see. it's the cheapest and best way to get the most for your car should the worst happen

From what i thought - you just decide on a 'reasonable value' and go to them with either pics or the car and they have a look and see if it is what they seem to be a reasonable figure.
I dont think a value that they see as reasonable will be much different than market anyway.
Prob just best to go with market.... my insurance offered me 'free agreed value' but i never worried about looking into it.

Mine is agreed value thru shannons.
i requested it, gave them a figure, he looked it up to see if it was reasonable and then told me it was fine...that was it
no showing them pictures or getting it valued
