Some of you have seen it at cruises, or at Teeny's wedding late last year.

It's progressed a little since then.

This is why the Astina has been sitting for a while.

It still needs to be about an inch lower at the front (of a possible further 3 inches lol), but it currently about 11cm off the ground. Just legal.

Not too much more to do on it til i'm happy to leave it and just enjoy driving it.

That was the 1st thing I noticed. I guess with so little power you need a smaller contact patch to even think of spinning the wheels :p

Haha, nah, i'd be lucky to do a 30 second 1/4 mile i reckon lol. It's only got 40hp!

It actually still handles pretty well. The front has been narrowed 2.5 inches, and has drop spindles so it's still got a pretty good ride, surprisingly.
And i haven't really driven it hard round the twisties since lowering, but the grip level still seems about the same.

i think it's about 5° camber in the rear, and half a degree at the front. The rear is just a product of lowering any early VW - it's just how the torsion bar suspension is designed.

And besides - it looks cool :D;)

Lovely bug Dan!!! :D
Is that a venetian blind in the back window???

Rupewrecht
04-01-2007, 10:34 AM
Yeah, that's a venetian - made it myself! There's no bowling hat on the parcel shelf though :P

And i forgot to mention, it was painted and lowered by me :)

It's the ragtap I'm most impressed about, doing that yourself took balls. We laugh at the "look away" radiator movement, but taking a grinder to your roof? Golden Gonads moment!

you would love my mates VW rupe, his got the superbug model with a very nice full velour retrim, acrylic gunmetal grey respray and a fully rebuilt carbie with bigger cams, extractors and a few other goodies...sounds like a hot rod when his idling then takes off!

Nice work though, looks the goods mate.

Hey Dan, I saw your beetle on Canterbury Rd yesterday (4/1). I love the matte finish on the black part of the paint and the colour combo. Nice work!

OMG! talk about Pimp Dan's Ride! lol
Looks fantastic :)

Rupewrecht
05-01-2007, 12:21 PM
Yeah, it's a bit roddish ;) I suppose the reason for the color scheme was seeing a (shiny) black and red beetle with whitewalls in a book years ago, and it's always stuck in my mind. Then when my paint started getting ratty, it was a case of back to the metal as the non-original paint was cracking right back to the undercoat.

i just started playing round with a few ideas, and it's ended up pretty close to the concept. It almost had flames!
concept 1 (http://rupewrecht.com/vw/vw_mock_redflames.jpg) - concept 2 (http://rupewrecht.com/vw/vw_mock_scallops.jpg) - concept 3 (http://rupewrecht.com/vw/vw_mock_scallops2.jpg)
Not really sure where i got the idea for the scallop from - i think it just looked a bit bare, and the white contrasted well! As to the metal flake...well that just kinda happened too ;)

Cutting the hole in the roof to put the Britax ragtop in probably was the freakiest thing to do to it, but is definitely the best purchase for it that i've made :D

This is still the 'other' car, as this is an Astina site :p

Looks insane (kinda evil tho, especially in that long distance shot from behind). Very nice, 5 degrees camber, are you sure, looks more than that.

Rupewrecht

Hah yeah, that was a guesstimate - it's actually closer to 12 degrees!

Bit of an update:

I got some new 145/65R15 tyres on the front of the Beetle...and so was finally able to adjust the torsion beam from the highest it could possibly be to about halfway down in adjustment capability.

Eehehehehehehe.

Haha lowrider and Ive seen the way you drive it
You need to add a metal shield under the car now to protect against the way you fly hahahaha
