HEY GUYS,
how much diffrence is there between my current disc brakes and the DBA533SL/R vented slotted rotors. also what else is availible for my car!

is the DBA a strait swap i.e. will they be compaible with my existing calipers etc?

also (tony might be best to help) where can i source some KYB shocks from and do you have a part number?

cheers mike

Go to www.discpads.com.au

Everybody says stay away from the crossdrilled as they crack
and I have seen it on heavy cars like the commodores etc but
not so much on the light ones like ours. Geoff also had them
on his BG and dont remember him having any problem with
cracking either. The fronts just fall off after you take the calliper
off so are an easy change. Think you will need new bearings to
replace the rear.

Cant wait to see

ive just recently got slotted discs in. Havnt noticed a major difference in braking except they no longer sucked the way they did b4 with my old fried ones.

but you would be able to brake harder if u really needed to , and the discs will be able to take a bit more of a thrashing b4 they die.

if u get ones that arnt the same size i believe you'll have to replace the caliper etc. maybe the hub i dont really know.

if u get some 'green stuff' pads they're supposed to be good i hear.

are u after looks or performace here ?

Also, the Bendix mill is just down the road over here... Unfortunately you can't buy direct from the factory though :(

Ive heard great things about Bendix Ultimates, reasonably priced, not as dusty as your Endless and EBC pads and wear quite well.

Mate of mine has his lancer done for $500 all 4 wheels inc. machining. Not a bad price.

Toyboy

Yeah but i dont think they are making the ultimates any more dude, think bendix have replaced them with a newer pad :P Could be wrong, thats what i heard anyway

Damn I love my Ultimates. All the stuff they said about
eating rotors hasn't happened for me at all. The wear rate
on them has been great too I have had them on for almost
2 years and heaps of pad left. They are a little dusty which
is the only down side.

Primo the crossed drilled fronts will be a straight swap.

Cross drilled disks!

*Danger will Robinson* arms swing wildly

Cross drilled rotors are like putting a grater against the pad. Sloted will do you until you put it on the track for more than 10 laps with more power than Rupes' new engine.

Ask a few brake shops then talk to Rowan. If it's recomended for the 1.8 then it will be the right size.

no u shouldnt need cross-drilled and it will possibly end up costing u more in the long run as they will wear ur pads quicker.

From Cosmo Dude :

Get some slotted ones.

Where did you get the info about cross drilling wearing out the pads more.
Crossed drilling is simply to allow better ventilation for hot air to get out
from the centre vented section. The holes are champhered so where does
the cheese grater effect come from. The only problem associated with
cross drilled has been cracking between the holes. I have seen this on
heavy cars like Commodores but no so much on smaller 4cyl cars like
ours. The extra $35 a rotor over "just slotted" is for appearance as
for street use there is no discernable difference over the slotted.
Discpads.com still have a litsing for Ultimates for the KF/KH Laser TX3
which is the same pad and are about $100 a set.

Primo if your freaking out about this like you were for ages over the springs then just get the slotted. I will be buying Gold even when I
do my 330mm wild upgrade.

from what you've said, you want to increase your actual disc size, by the sound of it - in which case i doubt you'll be able to keep your existing calipers.

I've heard about the crossdrilled DBAs cracking - as the holes are drilled after the casting of the disc, not during the casting process - which means the holes have different (and uneven) expansion rates to the slots in the disc which are cast in.

for the power of your car, slotted would be more than enough.

and ditto to what's been said about bendix being less dirty, from what friends that have had them have said. but i'm using Lucas high performance ones of some description at the moment

Erm.....yes. That would have been me.. but it was warranted though :)

Theres a noble greener around the rat here with the slotted rotors Mike.. Looks good and looks like it stops good too! :o I'll see if I can take a pic of it next time i see it..

I've had many moments in the Cosmo caused by brake fade. I've spoken with many brake specialists, performance shops and other racers. All agree that cross drilling improves disk cooling and increase pad wear. You need to be extreeeemly brutal on the brakes to need cross drilling.
If you like the look of drilled rotors then go ahead, you can have the rotors heat treated to minimise cracking.

To Adam and Michael, Sorry for confusing you have spoken to so many
people about so many modifications having a hard time keeping up with
it all. Also the remarks about the springs wasn't meant to be an insult
I was simply trying to explain stop tormenting yourself and just go on the
side of caution.

Cosmo,
I accept what the guys you are talking to say. Its much like a turbo.
They say that a turbo motor is no more thirsty than a NA, but as the fun
factor increases through the application of the right foot nobody seems
to drive as slow as they used to pre turbo so fuel economy suffers.
Applying the same logic I believe that guys using the crossed drilled
rotors brake harder at the last minute so pad wear increases. I pretty
much know that every mod I have made makes me drive harder, corner
harder, 0-60 harder and brake harder so its a bit hard to do an apples for
apples comparison.

well my KYB suspension is now in and running sweet :) one thing to piss me off tho. along the lines someone has dropped one of my wheels on its face leaving 11 of the 12 spokes scratched. looks like ill be getting a replacement tho :) might use my 5th wheel for a boot display :) lol see how i go just wanna get the issue sorted out first. can someone clarify that shadow chrome rims will need to be redipped for the job to be done properley?!

deaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad meat

haha na its all sorted. getting a new wheel, fit, alignment and balance asap as my mechanic was cool with covering the costs of it all. this will make it my 5th wheel alignment in less than a year (9 months i think) haha aw well. he wants to keep my old (slightly scratched one) should i offer him some $$ for it and do a boot display or just leave it be!?

shove it in the boot as a spare... better then the stock spare..

Toyboy
24-07-2003, 08:39 PM
Yeah but it weighs more than the original spare :P If you wanted to keep the weight down for performance reasons, just keep the original spare and let them take the mag,how often do you plan on blowing a tyre

Cosmo Dude
24-07-2003, 09:18 PM
Keep it as a spare, or a spare spare. If you bust or crack a good'n it could be cheaper to have it re-finished.
