As most of you know I have recently adopted an Astina.
Problem is that its previous pilot had the Nicotine affliction.
Now when I get into the car I feel like my stomach wants to make an emergency evacuation.
I have removed and cleaned all the interior bits, shampooed the carpets and ceiling, cleaned the windows and still there is the rank disgusting smell of old cigarettes.

My opinion, if i was in your place, one weekends when i dont have work, ill take all the seats out of the car so you can see all the floor carpet and were these the cut outs in the carpet could be some crap/smoke butts or some weird that could be giving out the smell, and plus you can clean the seat abit more better.
If you have a garage, one or two night leave the windows all open (and if you can the boot) maybe that will help. (and also if you do take out all the seat, you can leave the car one day without the seat, car closed and next morning see if theres a smell, sometimes it could be the seat, even if you cleaned them good, the old owner ould have been a drinker too and dropped everywhere over time? just a thought)
And get one of those air smelly things and hang it on your mirrior :D so when its all closed and you open the car it wont be so bad.
Sorry if it sound a lot or abit extreme - Just trying to help :)

I'd get that deodoriser spray stuff and just soak the material/saturate the seats with it...as the smell will still be in the foam, i reckon.
And buy an air freshener for the vents...better to smell like daisies than stale smoke

pull out the seats, then cover the carpet in baking powder, close the doors, put the seats inside somewhere, give them the same treatment
1 day later suck up all the baking powder... works wonders for soaking up all sorts of smells...but time consuming - you have another car tho so shouldn't be a huge problem.

I've also had good results using the Air Wick carpet deodoriser stuff. Also you really need to clean out the vents, including the recirc pickup. I've cleaned the seats and carpet, but after a few hours the smell would come back again, cleaning the vents made a large difference.

I work for an automotive airconditioning company and your best option is to give it an A/C bomb. Its not a deodoriser to hide the smell its a sanitiser that will clean the air and gets right into your interior. WYNES is probably one you could get your hands on at a local auto barn or where ever. Your A/C needs to be on cold and fan on high car on obviously and let her rip. Your car will fill up with a smokey haze (the good kind) and once it has done its job, usually 10 min or so, let it sit for 10 and maybe a little air out of 5 min. Its wicke di did it to mine from an ex-smokers car.

of course next time your shopping stop by the cleaning aisles... keep walking buy febreeze and go crazy - that will remove most of the stench, do that after you've done the trek for lost butts, checking under the seats, as well as behind the dash... god knows that was always an issue!!!

Yeah we use Wynn's at work. Put a container into a fancy machine that blows smoke through the vents and does a suprisingly good job! One of the guys that borrowed the boss's car smoked a pack in it and 10 minutes later you wouldn't be able to notice.

The first thing I did was to strip, clean and re-assemble the dash. There was a ridge of EEEWWWW!!! around the shifter bits and it made a lot of difference. I think I'll try the A/C bomb thing once the A/C is fixed (clutch magnet issue, plenty of gas).

also, if you do take the seats, mats, everything out, leave them in direct sunlight, as this is known to kill smells and germs.

I'd probably get the car dry cleaned, making sure they do the roof as well...
