View Full Version : Another Newbie! looking 4 turbo sp20's
Hey everyone!
Uz all seem 2 hav some relevant info 2 put in!
I own a blue 2002 Sp20 which has now done 37k! How good a mazda's!!!
I went from a suby 2 a maz and dont regret it at all! Pity about the 6500rev-limiter! another 1000 would have been nice!
I got my car put on the dyno at 30k, and got 88kw at the wheels! Totally standard, just 98ron fuel! I did this just 2 get an idea 4 when i do some mods eg:rear muffler!
Has anyone else got any figures on power at the wheels for different mods?
Hi Ezin,
Welcome to our club...
A couple of the other guys on here have SP20's, with mods, but i'm not sure if they actually have dyno figures. Chris (Critter), Beno (TDK) and AdelaideSP20, have plenty of mechanical mods to their sp20's...
At the moment, I only have king springs, but looking into further mods.
I am from melbourne too, where did you get your car dyno tuned?
Hope to see you on our next melbourne 'meet' and 'drive'.
cheers,
Bill

Interesting to see you only lost 10KW thru to wheels.
A mate who is buying a REX says they are 158 or 160something KWs at the fly & 98KW @ the wheels.
Sounds a bit low, but he's fairly adament about it.
Maybe it's the 4 wheel drive setup that's responsible for the efficiency/power loss?
D. :?

All depends on what dyno you run on.. The general consenses is 30% loss through a 2wd car

Yeah I've heard the same.
So you'd think a 98kw SP20 would run about 71 kw @ wheels.
Although I would expect a FWD to lose less power as the wheels are under the motor.
Hey Guys!
If you looked at the dyno graph on the rex u would see that in has nearly 98 kw at the wheels the whole time 3500rpm onwards! Mine only produced 88 at 6400! See the difference!
The dyno i used is very accurate! Mk automotive in Moorrabin!
A FWD car has a loss of about 15-25% Dependant on the condition of the gearbox! Remember that engine drive does not have to change direction! this is a big advantage!
I highly recomend putting ur car's on the dyno! Its a bit of fun!
+ you get to see the fuel ratio's so u can do some mods! :)

I would like to have a dyno day! With everyone on one dyno. So the readings are all from the same dyno

two months, and you've got a deal 8)
Most Tafe's have a dyno day when u finsh ur dyno course! That way about 20-25 people can put there cars on! It takes all day! Its worth it when u get the GTR's on!
That way, uz can all uz a dyno, and it will cost a hell of a lot less per hour (Cause ur not paying someone!) and use it urself when u do a new mod!
For the cost of putting ur car on the dyno u can almost afford the course!
(The government wants more qualified people so they compensate)
All dyno's are calibrated so they are pretty accurate! (I have heard of some dodgy joints though-Backyard Bomb joints-avoid those)
Uz will find out a lot more if u do the course!
ENJOY!!! :D

Last time I had the Cosmo on the Dyno they wouldn't run it past 5000rpm, only 204hp at the wheels. I am quite pissed off as I know it goes past 7500.
Hey Ezin, do you know where we could have a BBQ and Dyno day?

I just spoke to MazTech in Thornbury a few days ago.
They charge $40 a go.

I was cruizin the net the other day and found a site with some turbo SP20's (Protege 5's).
I can't remember the name of the site but it was on the "Top Mazda Sites" list.
The site was in Spanish but I guess you could e-mail them in English and they may have someone who can read/speak that or you may know someone who is fluent in Spanish.
Cheers
No one i know is really interested in doing a dyno day + BBQ! They all seem 2 be to busy, and would rather do their normal work!
The only time ive seen, is at the Tafe + big events that u have to pay 4 & u would have a huge crowd watching!
I looked at the turbo sp mazda's in America! AAHHHHH! Why did we not get them over here! NO fair! I am just hopeing the new range of mazda's take off like the WRX's did, that way, mazdaspeed might see money can be made by importing turbo kits for them! Not just the MX5 & rotory's!!

To be honest I reckon at 88kw that is the strongest SP20 that ever left the Mazda factory.
Mine made 79kw with a cat-back zorst and chip.
A mate' SSS Pulsar with extractors, full Hi_Tech exhaust, head work and CamTech hi-lift cams, Microtech and some other stuff makes 94kw.
For some turbo examples go to

If I can get the numbers then I'll organise a DYNO DAY.
Probably in Melbournes north and about $50 per car. As Ezin posted thier would be a limit to the participants.
Wont be AstinaGT only affair hopefully many different Mazdas.
BBQ sounds cool :D

Here's a link 2 my dynograph http://www.drawkcab.com/dumpyard/ezindyno.gif
I got this on the 8th run! I got 88 on the 3rd run! always the way, U always end up chasing more! :D

My friends own a dyno and i put mine on at about 15000 kms and got 87kw @ the wheels (it would seem they are reasonbly accurate then) I put the unichip on the same day and got to 91 kw not a big difference, but the better fuel efficiency is worth it. I wish i did it again when i did the filter and the exhaust...
I was on a site, ill have to find the address, that was talking about quad throttle body set up for the sp20..would be an excellent alternative to turbo because of the heat up here (im in nth qld).

Nice Man! Nice!!
I would still rather the mazdaspeed turbo kit! A heap more torque across the rev-range!!
Nice setup Man!! :)

Nice figures! Does anybody know if the Australian SP20s can have the same parts bolted on to make the Mazdaspeed turbo 323's in the USA?
I just had a look on the mazda usa site! The bastards have got rid of all the detailed specs on the engine, drivetrain, & chasis! I would have posted a link to them! Cant be happy with that!
I remember they had!
*Forged pistons
*Shot peened rods
*Nitrited crank or something
*lowered compresssion 9.0 down from 9.7
*Revised fuel system
*Camshafts
Not sure what else besides the rest of the kit!
I look at this and think its only for reliability which is good, but they only run 0.5 bar boost (7.5 psi) which is nothing considering the horsepower only goes up 30 from 140-170! pretty poor for 7.5psi (Must be the tuning for usa)
A lot of N/A cars have had low boost kits put on them with no internal mods done & run quite reliable! So i would think u would just need the external kit!
Oh yeah howz this, the new 03 WRX's that ive been working on are running 28.8psi YES NEARLY 30 POUND BOOST STANDARD!
I tested a couple just to make sure! I couldn't belive my eye's! Thats double the boost from the 02 model! Remember they have VVTI but still have a compression ratio of 9.5/1 Im still thinking about the 3 year warranty & unlimited KM's (poor turbo)
So i think 7.5psi is ok for a N/A engine with a thicker head gasket should be ok if cooled properly!

How many of those '03 WRXs will be un-modified in 36 months?
Get used to saying 'Sorry but the 'XYZ' voids your warentee and the cost to repair your car is $???.??
Tell me about it!
But most people that modify their cars dont have any drama's! But that may change! Who Knows!
Most people arent stupid! they know their warranty is void cause they read the book in the glove box!
Or they do the smart thing & go to AirPowerSystems and get a warranty of them!
Those cars feel like they are going to rip up the tarmac!! To much fun until the cops get ya!
