Car's been running a bit rough over the last few days - going hard in some parts of the rev range and real soft in other parts but has sounded awesome!

Figured it was something to do with the timing and/or CAI that I played with recently but hadn't had any time to pop the hood and have a look until last night.

From the sound, I thought I had blown the centre out of the air filter or something but after checking the air filter to be fine I started the car with the bonnet up and heard a hissing sound.......

84 freakin' dollars for a bit of pipe 15cm long. Seems like Mazda has a standard base price for everything of 80+ bucks!

Pictures make me think that I should really clean up my engine bay though.

I had the exact same thing happen to my car...

I just went and got a 'U' bend piece of 3" exhaust, a pod filter, a can of high-temp engine paint, some 3" internal-diameter high-temp rubber pipe and some pipe clamps and made a custom cold air intake that works well and sounds great!

Only cost me $150NZ all up as well for all the materials...

Bugger,
That's between the engine (big vibrating thing in the front) and the AFM (AirFlow Meter) attached to the chassis.
If wreckers are still too expensive you could get some 90mm rubber pipe from Pirtek and make it fit. (You will understand why you didn't go there for CAI pipe when you ask the price  )

All fixed now. Decided to go for the $84 option and might do something funky later on if I get the urge.

Its amazing how smooth the engine is now that the engine is getting the air that the air sensor says it should be getting
