We've discovered something odd about my BPT engine.
apparently it's got a water-cooled oil cooler sitting between the engine block and the oil filter!
pics of it:

now the question is: did any BPT's (be it TX3/GTR/GTX) come with one? as it's similar to a series 3 RX7 one, but about half the length/thickness (ie less heatsinks).
any clues? will post more pics tomorrow (installed)
cheers
Dan
was it ever connected ? eg pipes, oil residue etc
hmmm .... maybe it was put there to cool the oil
i'm surprised they only find it now.
are you SURE they've touched ur engine over all these months ?

It's not on my engine 'ask Brad.
I thought it could be an additional oil cooler to the turbo.

nah i've known about it for a while, just forgot to post it up.
not sure if it was connected last time, as the guy that took the engine out in feb (for rebuild) has left there since.
i was more interested to see if anyone else had one, or what it's likely to be off...

So it's got the tap offs for the remote cooler as well? Not like the early scrote ones which were just finned pipes between the mounts?
The finned types do work quite effectively if given a supply of air, and are good for N/A use - dunno if they'd sink enough heat for a turbo though.
Then you have the whole - oil coolers should have thermostats thing ;)
Of yes Dan, you're in for a world of pain if you decide to keep it and do it 'right' ;)

well, it doesnt seem to have hardly as many fins, so...
and it's hardly in a place to get cold air, either
current though is that we plumb it into the heater hoses to at least get some flow to it, as it would have to make some difference, however small
Ok checked this in the tx3 manual which i borrowed from mal. The cooler is standard.
Links to diagrams showing the coolent flow through the motor and how the oil cooler is piped in (note: images are 500kb each):
