Out of interest has anyone tried skimming (lightening) their flywheel? If so does it make much of a difference?
Cheers

From what ive heard, machining the flywheel make the car rev free'r but it will lose some touque, which the car lacks in the first place
I would only machine the flywheel if the engine was turboed,or a worked n/a motor

Lightening the flywheel makes the engine rev easier but I have been
told that the reduction in reciprocating mass reduces torque..
If you were rebuilding a motor and had the engine out I may consider
it but could not justify the expense of taking the gearbox out and having
it lightened. Better gains to be had elsewhere.

I have a 4.5kg flywheel in the Cosmo, the motor revs like you wouldn't believe. Moving off at the lights can be a b%$#h and thats with a 1000rpm idle.
I wouldn't alter the flywheel unless you have a quite modified engine or as part of a larger project.

i remember talking to Familia_Nut on the fast fours forums about this, but damned if i can find the conversation...
but anyway, it's not a good thing to lighten the flywheel on highly powered BP engined cars. something to to with extra stresses
i wish i could find it, as he explained the reasons not to quite well - and he's running 11 sec qtr miles in his GTR, so must know what he's talking about to an extent.

My 4.5kg flywheel isn't the standard one lightened, it's an aftermarket steel one.
