during an attack of common sense, I used the mounting frame of one of the standard projector units to make a template for a mounting frame adapter for one of the new projector units I bought. Making a rough and quick sheet metal adapter, I mounted one of the new projector units onto the standard adjusters and mounting peg. Using the stock plastic lens surround, I roughly adjusted the light unit. It fits and everything is stock except that the new unit takes H1 or H4 or H7 globes. and has a dipping shutter. And that is about the best I can think of to do to legally improve the main lights of the BA. Anything that isnt basically stock is going to attract examination and test for compliance with SA and ADR rules. the adjusters turned out to have frozen where they go into the back of the headlight (adjusting screws removed) I heated one up a bit and sprayed it with silicone, rusty coloured stuff ran out. That adjuster now moves more freely.

I took apart one of the projector units I bought . It consists of the reflector, an aperture and in this case the shutter has a dipper unit which moves an additional light blocker up or down, and the lens holder and lens:
the light field projected is a slot, not a circle. theres not much leeway for error in aiming.

Here's what the (unfinished) headlamps look like roughly thrown together:

there is an additional high beam unit to go in both yet.

Here's the light fields produced when both globes are powered from an old battery charger:

    high beam:
