The US got the Protege/Familia from 95-98, and Canada got that, and the 323 Neo/Lynx. But no Astinas.

Just wondering if any of you know how to tell the difference between a MAZDA 323 BG10P2 Astina, and the SP one? Because on carsales some of the SP models have "MAZDA" next to the right light, whilst some have the circle inside the cirlce badge instead. Its the same with the non SP models. Do they differ for each year? Or is there a way to tell them apart?
Any info would be great!

zappy65 23-05-2007 06:26 PM

having a sunroof is one

bourbon 23-05-2007 06:42 PM

no its not zappy...some SOHC came out with sunroofs...the mazda badge on the bar next to the blinker in the bar means series 1...series 2 didnt have that...

BG10P1 = series 1
BG10P2 = series 2

youll have to find out if its DOHC or SOHC, also if it has more sportier looking seats, power windows, sunroof...if it has the full package will most likely be a SP...

zero_1984 11-06-2007 09:18 PM

Ok could someone help me out here.

i know my mazda is a 1991 BG 323 astina (not the sp!).. i think its a SOHC (¿) . i've seen the same car at calder park in melbourne with a 1.8 turbo engine etc..

my question is what size engine does the 91 bg come with, and where the frell do people get these turbo edition engines from, and how much?! :D

zappy65 11-06-2007 09:39 PM

they get the turbo engines from....none other then a GTX familia or a laser turbo usually....and to a lesser extent the GTR familia....basically a small hatchback mazda that is turboed....you can tell wether it is SOHC by where the spark plugs are... by the way 91 BG's came with both 1.6 SOHC and 1.8 DOHC have a look at my readers rides to see a DOHC engine....

Hi guys,
I'm a Mazda noob. I know Redbook can be wrong (and very frequently is) but according to it, all the 323s from 1991 (and probably other years, I just happen to be looking at 1991) are DOHC. I assuming that's wrong - but despite it thinking that they're all DOHC 1840cc engines, it thinks there are three different power figures. The SP quotes 92kW and 160nM - another quotes 76kW and 140nM and then another a very slightly different figure from that lower one.

Can someone point me to something that shows the TRUE power figures for the various engines? I'm assuming the SOHC is a fair bit lower so maybe Redbook is close with the power.
Also, is there a sure way of telling which engine a car on carsales has? It's just a 1991 BG series 2 Astina.

Cheers.

BP SOHC is 76kw, any of the BP DOHCs are 90+kw

bourbon 15-04-2010 09:36 AM

yeah would be the 92kw for the SP, 76kw for the SOHC and the other one would be an import 1.6L SOHC which will be slightly the same...

Quazimoto 15-04-2010 01:34 PM

Thanks. How can you tell from a sale listing that doesn't photograph the engine bay?

Rupewrecht 15-04-2010 01:44 PM

A BG (SP) with the BP DOHC will have a sunroof and electric windows.

wrong...all the BG astinas came with electric mirrors in aus anyway...

but yeah most astinas that have the sunroof & electric windows will be DOHC...and if its a standard exhaust it will have twin tips...

mussing 16-04-2010 12:30 AM

SPs also have 14" alloys in one of two styles depending on series, whereas the SOHCs have steelies with hubcaps.

Quazimoto 18-04-2010 01:55 AM

Thanks guys.
Probably not the place to ask but it's not really worth starting a new thread I think...

The SP (or whatever I should generally call the twin cam) is a pretty reliable car yeah? I've had a few Mazdas around me (only owned one myself but parents etc) and pretty much never had problems with them (in my opinion, Mazda is THE most reliable car despite what Toyota owners say) but I've never dealt with one of the sports ones like this - plenty out there with a billion KMs on them, safe enough buy in general? (I realise you have to be smart, to know what you're buying etc.)
