The famous egg ring install pics

Hey guys,

Here are pics of the polished steel cluster guage rings upgrade. I couldn't be bothered taking pics of the rings at night when the guages are lit up, but the light reflects around the speedo and tacho to create a nice green halo around them. There is not enough light emitted from the fuel and temp guage to make much of an impact at night...

nice! they look really good :)

Thanks Dan,

I should point out these are such a tight fit that they didn't go on all the way. There was a gap just under 1mm between the ring and the plastic lobe that they squeeze onto. I was hesitant to put any more pressue on them than I already did, and since the gap is only noticeable when the clear lens is off I figured I wouldn't press my luck.

Cheers,
Gav.

yeah they are p!ss easy to install. mine has about 0.5mm gap under the rings but not noticeable at all. i used quite a bit of pressure, but didnt want to push my luck.

no glue/silicon was harmed in the making of this production (on my car)

Looks sweet! Nicely done.

Cloudland 24-11-2004 02:14 PM

it looks really nice. more like the instruments on the mx-5 or something.

and U stare at it everyday!!! the best upgrade i reckon.

chicaboo 24-11-2004 02:19 PM

Yeah I know, how many mods are there that you don't even see yourself while driving?
They remind me of the old school guages I had in my 1975 Subaru 10 years ago.

Matt 24-11-2004 03:33 PM

they look really nice man. was it easy to do? how did you go about it

chicaboo 24-11-2004 04:43 PM

They came with an instruction video, but I can give you a brief run down. Just remember to lower the steering wheel and place something over the exposed plastic before you start, so as not to scratch anything.

1. Unscrew the 2 screws at the top of the black instrument surround.
2. Carefully pull the bottom of the instrument surround off one side at a time, it is clipped on.
3. Unscrew the top screw on the instrument cluster.
4. Unscrew the 2 bottom screws on the instrument cluster.
5. Tilt instrument cluster forward from the top.
6. Unscrew the clip on the top of the instrument cluster.
7. Unclip the 3 wiring looms to the instruments cluster (this is the hardest part).
8. Carefully zig zag the instrument cluster out from behind the steering wheel.
9. Carefully unclip the clear lens from the instrument cluster (this is the 2nd hardest part).
10 You are now ready to install guage rings and reverse process...

Oh, and you will need the guage rings before you do all this, Twighlight MAY have 1 set of brushed rings available if the sale falls through?

Gav.

chicaboo 25-11-2004 03:30 PM

ok ok, I'll take some night shots tonight without the flash to see if I can capture the nice green glow they put off as I would see them while driving.
oh, and why why oh why did I not put this thread under Interior and electrics? I guess one of the mods can move it if they like...

arden 25-11-2004 03:36 PM

sacah 25-11-2004 07:37 PM

chipa 25-11-2004 11:02 PM

I got mine today! fully sik is about right! Very very happy :D :D :D

The antenna took a little work as I had to buy a small gromet and cut it to size so that it sat just right. I didn't realise how small the antenna was, but otherwise it looks great. will post pics soon.
