My project astina...lots of pics.

My Project car...

Ok, so I got my first car :) ...it does need some work, but it has some potential.
Its just a shame that I can’t drive it until I get my L’s…next year.

The Car…

1990 BG astina sp, 1.8 manual,
It has roughly 125000km’s on it and the motor is in very good condition
(never been driven over 80km’s, and mainly highway km’s + a full service history.)

Although the motor is in good condition…I can’t say the same for the body or the interior.

The body has many dents and the paint is completely faded + a rusted sunroof

The interior is basically a mold bucket,
due to the sunroof and a tarpaulin over half of the roof,
allowing the water getting in and preventing the moisture getting out.:o

The Job…

This astina needs to be completely stripped, interior and exterior.
The interior will need to be cleaned
And the whole car will need a respray.

The progress…

So far the interior has been completely stripped out, except for the dash,
But only half of the interior has been cleaned
(basically the hard stuff – seats and door linings…the plastics are easy)

Also the bonnet, nose panel, front guards and head light covers
have been sanded back and have had their first coat of body filler/undercoat,
and then they have been sanded back again ready for the second coat of undercoat/body filler.

A few Pics… keep in mind that it cost $150aus

Err.. is this statement correct? Standard highways speeds are 110km/h.

But for $120, who's complaining!

lucky score,
good luck with the project What do u have planed engine wise?

mussing 19-11-2008 11:57 AM

Was the engine already changed at some point? The writing on the side sort of suggests so...

Probably cam belt related. IE last time it was changed.

Ah, good to see your finally getting the car underway! If you need any more gear let me know...!

Cheers

BG1.8sp 19-11-2008 02:45 PM

Cosmo Dude is correct, its just when the timing belt was changed

And Yes it is the standard motor... at the moment im not planning to do anything with the motor...otherwise by the time i get my P's it will be illegal.

also the statement "never been driven over 80km’s" is correct
the previous owner (who is the first owner) was one of those annoying people who do 80 in a 110 zone.

BG1.8sp 19-11-2008 02:47 PM

well at the moment i don't
but ill see how things go with the sunroof...it may be repairable

dru 19-11-2008 08:14 PM

Your probably best getting rid of the rusted out sunroof panel and going for a perspex one....someone on here got one made up and it wasnt too badly priced!

yeah there is down side in 2nd hand cars in buying one which has not been driven to full potential

if you bought it off an old lady or some who never revved it past 3/4 or at least 3/4 of it's rev range at least say once a week.
You can end up with minor lip at the top of the engine in the cylidner. When you go and start running it harder latter in life. When you start to rev it out. The piston stretches it's only up to .5 of mm at most.

but in older cars I've seen it alot with 70's and 80's car driven by lovely old ladys some young P-plaeter gets it with in 1 motnh of reving it out this old say Corolla to it's 4500rpm redline. It starts to use oil - But neve had in it's life. Piston stretched and the rings ain't up to it.

Very rare now but I have seen it on many a car once owned by older more gentle drivers then given the treatment of driven stolen to see them start to burn oil.

Other that looks like a nice little project. Make sure you learn to look after it both in servicing and how you drive it.

Got some more work done this week end,

Front bumper completely stripped down, filled and undercoated.
Took off the drivers side front and rear doors, to be prepared for undercoat.
and took out the whole sun roof system, unfortunately the tin in the sun roof was completely rusted.
...if anyone has the tin, and they are selling it... please PM me.:D

i will post up some more pics of the progress in a few days.

mussing 04-12-2008 11:57 AM

How's the area around the sunroof? There's this available if you need it. Cheap too.

BG1.8sp 05-12-2008 08:10 AM

the area around the sunroof is in good condition,
but thanks for the help anyway,
its just the tin that i need.
