Handbrake light stays on..

recently my ba handbrake light went off every time i corner hard or when i spin my wheels.. wtf?? it's like a traction control system :p and it'll turn off after the car is completely settle.

but today the light just stayed on the whole time.. does that mean anything like low brake fluid or dysfunctional brake system .. or just the handbrake sensor?

outbakoz 15-04-2010 07:53 PM

more than likely low brake fluid

astie 15-04-2010 08:04 PM

so do i just need to top it up if that's the case? i'm goin to give it a check later tonight

because your brake pads are worn.

astie 15-04-2010 08:11 PM

well, according to the receipt from the last owner, all brake pads had been replaced less than a year ago. so i don't think it is the pads

michael0008 15-04-2010 08:12 PM

or a leak in your brake lines

just top up brake fluid ,my did it awhile ago and same thing happened around corners.the light stays on longer the lower the brake fluid gets:)

i've check the connection of the handbrake lever and that's not the source. then i've checked the brake fluid.. here's some pics of the brake fluid reservoir when the car is cold.

it's around 8mm above the min line so is that consider as low? is the car still drivable?

and which dot fluid should i use?

bourbon 15-04-2010 09:30 PM

Low brake fluid, the sensor gets caught on the inside as it floats. Fill it up and it will be fine...

And i think its dot4 cause its for the clutch as well

if u look where the max is u have less than 20% left (assuming min is undrivable)

RustyKaos 15-04-2010 09:43 PM

Yeah mine did the same thing when it got to about that level. Just top it up with DOT4 and it will stop.

Cosmo Dude 16-04-2010 08:29 AM

If your brake fluid is low, and according to the picture it is, then the question should be why. Me, I'd be trusting a receipt from the previous owner about as far as I could throw it when I could actualy look to see if my brakes are realy safe.

clutch slave normally leaks, look under the dash at the drivers pedals where the clutch pedal is. if you see moisture or rust, then it is that.

I agree, I had the same problem with my BG SP before I replaced the clutch master cylender

mussing 18-04-2010 09:19 PM

How do you fix it if the clutch slave leaks?

project.r.racing 18-04-2010 09:37 PM

buy a new one and replace it. it's worth $70-$80.

astie 18-04-2010 10:19 PM

f*** it is leaking down under the pedal!!!! i can see a stream of oil down there and it's leaking pretty fast i can say!! so should i take it to mechanic to get it replace?

bourbon 19-04-2010 07:55 AM

you can or you can do it yourself...if you dont have a clue what your doing get a mechanic to do it...i dont suggest using a slave or master from autobarn...ive had 3 from them and only lasted about 3months each...get one from a place that does brakes & clutchs specifically...

astie 19-04-2010 09:07 AM

ok, i've called a mechanic today and he said it might be the master cylinder leaking as well

bourbon 19-04-2010 09:48 AM

if its the one on the firewall, it will be the master cylinder...the slave is on the gearbox
