Manual Conversion, is it worth it?

hey,

i have a 96 V6 hardtop auto and i hav been thinkin bout wat to do nxt. i was either goin to get a 13b turbo put in it or i hav jst recently been thinkin about a manual conversion because of cost.

Does any1 know how much it would b to get a manual conversion and are there any problems after it has been converted to a manual?

CRA23 14-02-2006 02:19 PM

you would need a bank balence closer to the 6 figure mark to fit a rotory in to our cars :D

the manual swap can be done, but it is expencive, ive been lookin to do the swap 2 but i now have given up cos it will be to expencive and too much effort.

the easyest way i could think of doing it was to buy a half cut and just swapping every thing over in one go, as this is the only way your are insured u have every little bit needed for the conversion.

the other option is to sell the car and buy a manual, chicaboo did this

from what ive read i havent heard any problems

If you guys have the FN4A-EL? automatic, I have the TECHNICAL workshop service manual for it if anyone wants to buy it? Another thing, if you want to keep the auto but with more performance, you can run the lower geared SP23 auto box, same box with lower gearing closer to a manual 1,2,3,5 situation...

Gav.

will it fit tho? i doubt that it will have the same bolt pattern to bolt it up to the engine

pr1mo 14-02-2006 05:25 PM

sell auto. buy manual. easy :)

CRA23 14-02-2006 05:33 PM

what are the ratios for the auto, every web site i can find says something different?

chicaboo 14-02-2006 06:54 PM

I think The MAN's website has the most consistant info regarding the autos. There are only two modern cars that use the FN4A-EL auto now, the 2L Jspec 6 (can't remember cool name) and the SP23. Case casting might be different, just like it is from the BA to BJ gearboxes. I can't say if it mates up with no probs, but it has the same model designation with fantastic gearing for 323s! The SP23 has much bigger rolling diamter out of the factory, so you can imagine that with the 1,2,3,5 equivelant manual gears that it will honk along like a mofo in a 323!

Rupewrecht 14-02-2006 08:19 PM

More than likely the internals would fit in the BA V6 G case anyway

Cheapest way to do the conversion would be to find a damaged V6 manual (hatch or hardtop) or halfcut as Tim said, and chuck it in. As it'd be a pain to find all the parts.

So what would you need?

Pedal Box
Clutch
Flywheel
Gearbox
Mounts
Driveshafts
Clutch Line + Slave
Master Cylinder
Gear Linkages+ Gearstick
ECU
Loom

Anything i've missed?

A lobotomy, cheaper and easier to swap cars.

Lol true.

You'd be better off going 13BT and a RWD conversion ;)

Just buy a freaking RX7 if you are going to do that.

PhatAstina 15-02-2006 12:56 AM

I haven't seen inside an Auto, but you may need the bit of the centre console, that goes around the boot of the manual gearstick...... unless they are the same????

japanese mazda 6 is called a alltenza

Cosmo Dude 15-02-2006 10:12 PM

Someone in the land of the long white cloud has built a FWD rotary 323.

To do it as a RWD wouldn't be too difficult with a Rx-7 series 4/5.

Once the cross member is in the right place and you've connected the Astina steering to the Rx-7 rack you could graft the Rx-7 transmission tunnel into the Astina, relocate the fuel tank and once you have the Rx-7 rear suspension in the right place you fabricate mounts and bolt it up.....
As easy as 1-2-37,636,736.76

Rupewrecht 15-02-2006 10:13 PM

Atenza, actually :) and Mazda3 is Axela

I'd guess you'd be looking at about 1-2k for a V6 front cut, but i've no idea really having never needed one. Just ring a few wreckers to get an idea of price

Ian 15-02-2006 11:45 PM

you cant really be serious, can you?

Wouldnt it be far cheaper and easier and faster to just buy a manual and sell the auto?

hats off to you if you pull this off.

Nate 15-02-2006 11:59 PM

manual conversion arnt impossible ian. remember that BG sedan you were in last night ... thats an auto become manual ;)

but yes in the long run you would be better trading cars

CRA23 16-02-2006 11:42 AM

they do it all the time in japan in cars that are very rare with manuals eg 20b cosmo.

a few ppl in the US have done it in there mx3's(eunos 30x) took then 3-4 days to do it them selvs using a half cut

But a manual V6 is not rare??
if you do a great job on the conversion no one would be able to tell its not a stock V6 Manual. If the previously auto manual has advantages over the stock manual I don't know but I wouldn't think so, (I aint that knowledgable so possibly)

To me Smarter options are
2.5L
Jspec engine
FI
RWD or 4WD
IMHO I would definently go to some effort to see the result of any one of those but a previously auto manual hmmmnahso much,
