HOW TO: Change your Gearbox oil
Thinking about changing my gearbox oil.. A how to [from the manual, perhaps?] as to how one would go about doing this will be great!

Gearbox Fluid Replacement
Step 1. Jack up the front of your car, and stick some support stands underneath it to hold it up. Ramps will do too. Step 1. Drain plug is on the bottom of the box. 21 or 23mm socket (i think) will undo that. make sure you've got an icecream container or similar to catch the oil in there. Make sure you undo the Fill plug as well, otherwise the oil will take longer to drain. The fill plug is located on the side of the box facing the radiator. Step 2. Go have a coffee while you wait for it to drain, play with the dog, whatever. Step 3. Have a look at the drained oil. Are there lots of silver swirls in there? Thats bad - it means there's been a whole lot of interaction in there that shouldn't really be happening. It's unlikely that many bits will come out, as there's a magnet that's designed to attract the majority of the teeth etc that break off. Step 4. Get yourself a funnel, about 30cm of garden hose and 3L of box oil and fill the box - just make sure you're replaced the bottom plug! Keep filling until no more will go in. Done. |
how often should u do it ?

gearbox oil - 40000k's
|
Have fun learning how to make oil go up hill too!
|
or buy a 1 litre container...
the majority of new containers have a stem in them which extends to the fill hole |
ive had 4l sitting around waiting to go in for ages.
they have a spout which pops out like the drink bottles |
naaaa the spout should be about 20 cm long!!!
|
The spouts on my Motul Gear300 were only about 10cm long. There was some minor spillage...
|
jack the front and back of the car up and stick it on jack stands so that it is even otherwise u will not have enough oil
|
i changing my gearbox oil every 10000km. Reason is very hard n $$$ to find another if the gearbox is spoiled. so better prevent it from spoiled.
|

and cosmo, police dont have balls :p you shouldn know that! |
Just recently i noticed when changing gears i can hear like clicking and clacking noises and the gears are not so smooth anymore, is this because i need to change or not enough gearbox oil? or something else
|
isn't the gear oil meant to be filled on an upward angle? ie the front jacked up?
|
Go read step 1 again James ;)
Ray - sounds like it could be low. Stick your finger in the fill plug hole and if you can feel the level then it should be fine. But it could be due for a change anyway. |
bah can't expect me to read an entire thread :p
that would be being thoro.. thura.... gah ummm that would be too hard |
