Chewy's NA8C SR20DET
I dont think i introduced myself when i first became a member back in 08'.
My name is Duy (yui if you cant pronounce it) or you can just call me Chewy. I've owned mazda's since i've had my license. My last car as you all have known was a BG SP Astina. I have recently sold my car and have moved onto another Mazda... with a twist. Although the car itself does not look awesome or what not. i will spend my time cleaning it up and getting it to look better than what it currently is. This is the beginning of a long project. Enjoy. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...5/P1020927.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...5/P1020928.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...5/P1020929.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...5/P1020932.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...5/P1020930.jpg No fancy interior so i didnt take any photos of it. |
Well you've got your work cut out for your self... Good luck
|
cool! few q's... is that silver thing after the turbo on the exhaust side a BOV? never really understood turbos in their entirety... also silicone hoses on the intake side of things, i thought that was a no-no in a turbo (cause they can suck in or something...idk?)
|
Looks more like an external wastegate. IMHO I'd sell the blacktop and put a BP back into it.
|
looks good, and silicone hoses can be used where ever, when you turbo a car you should get the better silicone hoses for the pure fact that they have my layers making them stronger and wont compress under the air etc etc, most turbo cars I've seen use silicone, metal piping is a lot better because it won't compress.
|
yeah. external wastegate. has a screamer pipe that im gonna knock off. i dont mind the setup atm. boost kicks in around 3800.
|
Nice project, the SR shocked me a bit though!!
So what is planned for it, a lot of MS parts I would imagine? :D:D |
Not a bad project car, don't really like CA18's but if it's going strong why mess with it.

Looks like a CA18 intake manifold, but it shows how much I know about Nissans. :(

good lookin car man :D what box r u running and what diff :D |
Looks like the standard IM to me, the CA18 IM is a lot more squared off:

.....haha it's an SR20DET with stock IM. Beaut motor & certainly a worthy upgrade. You certainly wouldn't go putting the BP back in. Even the BPT would be underpowered compared to this engine unless you modified it & you really wouldn't. My guess is it uses the DET trans so it wouldn't be worth the trouble.
Great project Chewy & my only problem I have is the wierd-ass external w/gate set up. I mean wtf is that about? How the hell does it work coming off the turbo hotside  It should be plumbed from off of the zorst manifold! Are you able to explain the reason this is set up like this cause it's doing my head in :o:o It's almost like the modifier was trying to replicate workings of an internal wastegate? Why would you wantbthe gate coming off the snail shell? I just don't get it at all....... |
Nice. 2nd MX I've seen with a SR20 fitted.

i dont really see the issue.. its still on the exhaust manifold side. as it is still relieving the pressure for the turbo. yes it is a little bit up the turbin housing but it still should work fin in my eyes... |
yeah, no doubt it works Mat but it's efficiency would be compromised. The turbo should be allowed to force the spent gases out into the manifold whereby an external gate is used, free of interference, then the wastegate can discharge gases either back into the zorst system or straight to atmosphere. It seems to work more like an internal gate?
I'm stumped why would you do it unless it was a space-saving exercise? Just curious to know that's all........ I seen alot of custom set ups, in particular, specific manifold design which can be complex & even seen twin external screamers made to go into a single wastegate where most use 2 seperate pipes & gates. Also, do folk realise how hard a steel the turbine exhaust housings are? Extremely hard steel to cut & drill! Chewy, again, I luv the project man  |
Nice! and the SR is unexpected.
So it's a Eunos Roadster not a Aus-delivered MX-5 (judging from the silver)? |

looks pretty sweet and a interesting project really looking forward t see how this one turns out
|
yeah its a eunos roadster. the extra pipe on the turbo is a screamer pipe, dumps exhaust gasses into the atmosphere. highly illegal and yes i will remove it haha. the engine is from a series 2 S14 with VTI cams as you can see from the dip in the back of the engine. non VTI heads are completely flat.
this will be a fun project. and yes marc i will be putting plenty of MS parts on it :P |
OH. i forgot to mention that it has an electric bonnet release which is so cool. and it has a new set of Bilstein coil overs *drools*
|
That's brilliant...That must be an absolute hoot to drive
|
:D awesome car man. the light and nimble handling of a mx5 and the power of a blacktop to boot :D
brilliant, just brilliant :D |
Chewy, you do realise if you downsize from that turbo you will have alot better performance? You could easily be looking @ 2500rpm as a good base line for boost to start to kick in at about 50% comp efficiency. I don't know what psi you are pushing when you reach 3800rpm but if your not getting say, 5psi @ or around 2000rmp, that's not an ideal set up. A GT2860RS has about the best 'turbine' efficiency rating of all turbos for a 2.0L platform. There is an article from Garrett getting around Nissan & Honda forums about the DP matched to the 2.0L Toyota 3S GTE that came in the Celica GT4 & MR2's. Can PM you it if you like? Quite an awesome write up. If you get boost happening lower in the rev range you'll better avoid wheelspin too. I know how light the NA's are in the rear, even without boost.....

with this car i want to make the mods clean and neat. no messy stuff like what has happened here :P. i dont even know what half of the relays and fuses are in the car :S |
Great car, looks like it will be a lot of fun :)
|
I genuinely think you have a great project going man. I can understand the daunting feeling, especially the wiring etc. Most overlook the importance of getting the turbo & manifold right. Once you get all the heavy duty arsenal right, it's the tune that matters the most.
Will get the full & edited article for you. It's awesome but well worth the time to read through. Cheers buddy! |
I'm coming over tonight to steal it from you. Do not look out your windows between 9 and 10 pm.
|
the car is parked elsewhere :P
|
it would SUCK if it did get stolen... and ryan was MIA by chance... :O
|
some of us know where he lives :p
|
alright.. its been a while but no new mods/downgrades to the silver surfer. ended up buying another project.
Drum roll...... NA8 http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...5/IMAG0386.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...5/IMAG0387.jpg Dont worry Phil. Your wheels are safer under the car than being bolted to the hubs with no shocks :P |
the car was located in Bossley Park, NSW. If anyone is wondering how long and how much fuel it was.
Distance: Brisbane City > Bossley Park NSW (next to Cabramatta). Approximately 950km one way. Time: Left at 7pm Friday April 29. Returned at 11pm Saturday 30 Fuel: $550 there and back. Vehicle: Mazda Titan Diesel Non turbo 4cylinder slow accelerating import. Experience: not fun at all with the wobbly steering, bad roads in NSW (sorry boys.. i had to complain :P), terrible terrible speed signs (from 100km/hr to 60km/hr out of nowhere, i cant slow down that fast with a truck) |
alright so here are the photos of it as it is when i bought it up to the point of stripping it pretty much the day after i got home
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...5/P1030208.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...5/IMAG0390.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...5/P1030220.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...5/P1030221.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...5/P1030222.jpg not the prettiest sight but its actually not that bad under all that sheet metal. the owner who stripped the car was decent enough to leave the whole AC system intact with gas still inside :). |
Bosley park is 10mins from me you should of said hi :P
Nice buy. I was thinking of buying a mx5 as a track car. That would of been a good start :P How much you pick it up for?? |
and this is the car stripped of its bits.
Dash Out http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...5/IMAG0396.jpg Carpet Out http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...5/IMAG0397.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...5/IMAG0394.jpg Junk http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...5/IMAG0391.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...5/IMAG0395.jpg My plans for the black one: - Half cut NA8 Black. (for all the bits that i need) - Hard top - Roll cage - Oil cooler - Put the SR20 from the Silver Surfer into this Black Beast. - ETC Plans for the Silver NA6 - Take the NA8 engine and box from the half cut and convert it to 1.8 - Turn the whole car into stock for daily (fuel is like a chick right now) these are just basic needs for both cars. im not going to be too specific as you all get the picture :) |

i didnt get a chance to even explore NSW. i have a friend who lives there and even i didnt say hi to her. haha. next time i go to NSW i'll stay more than 10 min :) |
oh man I hope you got recipts and good details - Probability it's a stolen car 80% probability some one will come looking for you 2%
The fact you didn't like NSW roads - Priceless say on your side Cane TOAD. LOL Hope you didn't fork out much for it. |
Ahah that cool but I'll keep a keen eye on this thread as I've always liked the mx5 (probably why I bought the Capri lol)
Ah that's alright you were on business. Time is money ;) |
