Hey Leigh..
I have a Powershot S2 IS and i think it's a great camera, there's only a few minor improvements to the S3..
In regarding to batteries i use 2300/2500mAh rechargeables [Duracell with a fast 1 hour charger - about $70 i think for 4 batteries and a charger, JB Hi-Fi is your friend].. and you should be able to get anywhere between 400-600 shots on one set of those batteries with heavy use of the screen.. I try not to use flash photography as its so harsh, but you could knock off about 100 shots if you're using the flash i guess..
