using a 1.6 ecu for a 1.8 engine isn't advised.
pin outs are different on the ecus, even if you used a 94-97 1.8 mx5 ecu. can make it work, but alot of stuffing around and some adding of missing parts/sensors to engine.
cannot tune a bg stock ecu.
