I know it's a bit out of your price range but I'd suggest a canon 400D. I bought one at xmas time for $1188 with 2 lenses 18-55mm and 75-300mm and I wish I had've bought one sooner. Absolutely fantastic camera!
The thread labeled "My work place" in the lounge has a few photos I've taken with it.
