removing BA gearstick
hey guys this may seem like a dumb question but how do you do it on a 1.8 ba astina? i un did the bolt underneath the car on the bottom of the gear stick no probs but i cant get the part that holds the ball of the gearstick out. i had a look for the two little knobs to squeeze together if there was a circlip there but i cant find any. please help me! (i already searched the forums and came up with nothing)

There is a circlip in the top that needs to come out.
It is pretty simple once you get that out (it was a paint to get out though).

yeah that is the one.. ideally you need a pair of circlip pliers but a couple of small screw drivers will do the job.
If you can wait until I get home I will find the instructions that came with my B&M shifter, it has fairly good pics.

Normally with circlip pliers you put the the 2 pointy ends of the pliers into each hole on the circlip and squeeze the circlip open, then pull it off. If you don't have the proper pliers, or if the circlip doesn't have the 2 holes at the open end, you can prise it apart with 1 or 2 screwdrivers and lift it out/off. Careful cause they normally are very springy, and tend to sproing everywhere.

a pair of small needle nose pliers might do the job too.

Shoot, I only just now saw this topic.
Here you can download a manual I wrote on installing a short throw shifter but it also shows how to remove the stock gearstick. Well I just post it anyway, maybe someone else can use it. Installation manual short-throw-shifter Greetz

Jhoeven, I know this is an old post but that's a great guide for changing the stock gear stick for the BAs. Is it possible to request a repost of that guide but an English copy?
Even the photos are basically enough on their own so kudos |

Hmm, that's odd, there used to be an english version which I thought I uploaded here, quess it was the wrong one.
I will have to check my computer at home if the english version is still there (it's been a while). Gr.
