finally decided to go turbo... Now what will i need?
hey guys
i thought id start up a thread to help myself, and hopefully others... I decided that i wanna go turbo now, but im not in a rush to do so, so i figure ill slowly collect the parts as i go. I thought since more people on here know about mazda engines and turbos you would all be able to help me decide what ill need to get some good power levels. As im not 100% on what ill need, heres a rough list: turbo intercooler injectors fuel pump bov ecu and the things that would be custom made manifold ic piping what else will i need to get it going? Im not looking for a massive power increase, maybe just 120-140fwkw. Enough to give the laser some good go, and scare a few commy drivers.. Can anyone offer some recommendations on what parts would work well on my engine. A mate offered me a subaru liberty turbo for 200 bucks or a complete bpt setup (turbo, mani, ecu etc) for 700... But i dont know if thats any good for what i wanna do. What does everyone think? I know this is probably a common question that you guys ask, but as im unsure about what i should buy, i dont wanna rush out and buy stuff that wont be useable and waste money. Thanks

Hold back on injectors and the fuel pump - you may not need them
For example the SP20 injectors and fuel pump are fine up to about 10 psi boosted.

oh, ok then.
The guy who i wanna get to design all the plumbing recons i could safely run 8ish psi safely and get about 140kw at the wheels. But im doubtfull because no1 in australia knows anything about the zmde.

Another part to add to the list is Celica GT-S MAF sensor. As for other gear theres different bits and pieces you can use. Some guys in the states use Supra injectors forget what sort, they needed to change the impedience though i think.
I believe that the stock engine can handle about 16 psi stock. Your best bet is going through all the threads weve mentioned this to you before and checking there or mazdas247.

FP/FS engines suffer from weak rods. AFAIK this is not the case with the ZM-DE, id do some searching to make sure though.

You can change the thickness of the head gasket to change the compression ratio. That can also change the timing...

i tried searching on mazdas 247 a little bit yesterday. I know iv got a lot of research to do before i jump into doing this.
But it should be interesting too se what the little laser can do!! Would be cool to be the only turbocharged 1.6 laser in australia.

You mean kn/kq laser how bullet proof are the 1.6Lt engines? Is it gonna be easier to buy a second engine and build it up?

Start with the basics... Before you get consumed with this kit or that kit educate your self so you don't get cought short if your solution does not produce the expected results.

The ZM engines are pretty strong KQ should be able to feed quite a fair bit of boost into it without too much troubles.
