Is your Nardi Steering wheel worse for wear? Redlinegoods has the answer!

Hey guys,

Stumbled upon this the other night, Redlinegoods.com make a leather replacement that just needs to be restitched for that clean look, and pretty sure they do combined colours & stitching too! I for one will be doing this in the future as my replacement is starting to wear on the grey parts, which is normal..

Cheers
Marc

I got my shifter and handbrake boots from them. Excellent products and they have install info for every thing they offer on every car. I've got a MOMO that was a JDM factory option that has been peeling for a while now, might see what they can do for me.

the best/only way to keep the original nardi leather from wearing out is to do a yearly cleaning and reoiling... use only specialised leather cleaners (which are acidic) and leather oils... do NOT use soap as its alkaline nature is harmful to the leather

also it's best to have clean hands before you get in the car

if you have sweaty palms, then perhaps a 6 month regiment will be better

Not when they are in this condition:

And good luck finding a SP20 in Australia with over 150,000kms have a steering wheel thats in pristine condition!

I only created this thread for people that had a steering wheel that was a bit dodge, IMO Mazda shouldnt have used the silver/grey leather on the steering wheel at all...

agreed
however, if you owned the car since new or find a 2nd hand wheel (like a JDM one) in good shape, it can be kept in good condition with some TLC

do you find it interesting that the 2003 Sport20 in Japan used an all black Nardi wheel just like what the MX-5 got?

the fact that the silver crap doesn't last well from use is the reason why I chose to fit the all black Nardi wheel to my car (came with ugly 4 spoke)... that and the fact that it "matches" the Sport20 sedan motif I was after

It's the same with any of the colored ones - the blue/black and red/black on the auctions are usually add worn/rubbed black as well. The silver just seems to happen quicker because of the perforated leather (as well as being silver)

I think the real issue is, many people don't know (or don't care) that leather needs to be maintained, so it all goes to hell...

my sp23 has brown leather seats... still looks and feels like new instead of cracking or discolouration like you see typically with older leather seats... the leather steering wheel still looks/feels like new too, and it too has perforated leather except that it's all black

so no, I don't think it's perforated leathers have anything to do with it... it's just a matter of skin oils and other grime that buggers it all up

Seats are quite different to steering wheels though, IMO. Seat don't see nearly the same transfer of oils/dirt etc that a wheel does. Perforations also trap oil/dirt more than a solid leather, leading to breakdown earlier.

Considering most people drive with there hands placed at the wheel at 10 & 2, its no wonder they go yuck. Combined with our hot & humid weather, it just seems to brings on the breakdown of the leather faster.

When I do go about getting one of these from Redline, it'll be in a simple black with dark blue stitching

right, but like I said... periodic cleaning and reoiling helps prevent such deterioration from happening...

my sp23 has 80000km on it and is 7 years old now... as I said, steering wheel still looks and feels new, with no signs of wear

my 2nd hand nardi wheel in my protege had some wears and scuffs, but still looks in great shape after I cleaned and put liberal amounts of conditioning oils on it

UV, grease, dirt, and skin oils are killer to leather.... UV being the leading cause

we have lots of sun here in Texas like you aussies do... so I've seen plenty of cars with cracked/torn leather

tinted windows and windscreen sunshades at the car park helps big time!

I've purchased off Redline goods before and can't rate them highly enough! Quality products at very reasonable prices.

The one that got written off was immaculate. 180k kms on the clock and check the wheel!!
